eisenhower.nps is located in Cumberland Township, #Pennsylvania, adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield. This site preserves the home and farm of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, and its surrounding property of 690 acres. The property was purchased by then-General Eisenhower and his wife Mamie in 1950. The farm served as a weekend retreat for the President and a meeting place for world leaders, and became the Eisenhowers' home after they left the White House in 1961. The property has a putting green, skeet range, and view of South Mountain and the Gettysburg Battlefield. It was also a successful cattle operation, with a show herd of black Angus cattle. Some of the more notable of Eisenhower's guests were Premier Nikita Khrushchev of the Soviet Union, President Charles de Gaulle of France, and former Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Britain. The Eisenhowers donated their home and farm to the @NationalParkService in 1967, with lifetime living rights for the former president. Two years later, Eisenhower died at the age of 78. Mamie Eisenhower rejected the idea of moving to Washington to be closer to family and friends and, with Federal permission, lived on the farm until her death in 1979. The National Park Service opened the site in 1980. #pa #pahistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorepa #FindYourPark #architecture #eisenhower #eisenhowernhs #smallparksaturday #cumberlandtownshippa #gettysburgpa (at Eisenhower National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSqDMkDj2It/?utm_medium=tumblr

The visible remains of the sunken concrete ship the S.S. Atlantus at Sunset Beach in Lower Township, #NewJersey. It was one of twelve experimental concrete ships built during and after World War I. During a storm the ship broke loose from its moorings and ran aground in June 1926. Several times attempts were made to free her but were unsuccessful. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #history #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #architecture #capemaycountynj #lowertownship #lowertownshipnj #ssatlantus #sunsetbeach #atlantus #concreteship #sunkenship #wwi #worldwari (at SS Atlantus) https://www.instagram.com/p/COoc68RDZzZ/?igshid=g4r12pkc8vl9

The Baker–Duderstadt #farmhouse, built in the early twentieth century, in Warren Township, #NewJersey. The property was continuously farmed by members of the Baker-Duderstadt family for almost 150 years. The Baker family immigrated to America in the early 1840s from Germany. In 1998, the property was deeded to Somerset County as open space. The grounds are also host to the Baker–Duderstadt barn built in the mid-nineteenth century, a modern cinder block storage shed, a nineteenth century corn crib, and a large banked barn that was built in the twentieth century. The property was added to the @nationalregisternps in 2008. The buildings are not open to the public. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #history #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #architecture #archi_ologie #somersetcountynj #warren #warrennj #nrhp #farm #oldhouselove #deserve2preserve (at Baker–Duderstadt Farm) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNi7nVoDJJF/?igshid=1opzur6nyzt42

Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard in Lower Township is #NewJersey’s last remaining restorable World War II #tower. It was part of the Cape May Military Reservation, which was a part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system. Built in 1942, the tower was one of 15 towers, stretching from North Wildwood, New Jersey to Bethany Beach, Delaware. Four were in Cape May County – the only other remaining one is inside Cape May’s Grand Hotel. The tower was restored in 2008-2009 by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities and is open to the public as a historic site. I visited in 2016. Fort Nonsense in Morristown, #NewJersey, a unit of @morristownnps. Before breaking camp in late May at nearby Jockey Hollow, Washington wanted to secure Morristown as a supply base. On May 14, 1777 he ordered the construction of a #fortification on a hill bordering Morristown. The Fort was to act as an observation and alarm post, and a place of retreat for guards stationed in #Morristown. The British never attacked and the fortified hilltop was never used. Washington’s men leveled surrounding trees, dug trenches, raised breastworks, built a guardhouse for 30 men, and fortified the crown of the hill with an earthwork #redoubt. As early as the 1790s, the hill was called Fort Nonsense. A legend had grown that Washington had set his men to fortify the hill simply as a way of keeping troops busy. This explanation is unlikely. But in pension claims after the war, soldiers referred to the work as 'Fort Nonsense.' #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenj #FindYourPark #architecture #morristownnps #militaryhistory #visitnj #smallparksaturday #morristownnj #fortnonsense (at Fort Nonsense) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNOU4rwDX5Y/?igshid=3n9lpzb8p2z5

Millington station in the #Millington section of Long Hill Township, #NewJersey. The station is of stone-masonry construction with Richardsonian elements built in 1901 by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad. Today, it houses the Millington Station Cafe. In 1984, it was listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and @nationalregisternps as part of the Operating Passenger #Railroad Stations Thematic Resource. The station also once handled freight for local industries and the Millington Quarry. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #history #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #architecture #archi_ologie #morriscountynj #millingtonnj #longhillnj #nrhp #trainstation #trains_worldwide (at Millington, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNEC4EGDCoU/?igshid=8yogf4bds2kh

The Millington Schoolhouse #74/Old Town Hall in Long Hill Township, #NewJersey. The building began as a one room #schoolhouse built circa 1850. A second #school room was added as a wing in 1910 on the left side. Classes were held here continuously until 1926 when a fire forced classes to be held at the #Millington Fire House. Starting in 1928, it was used as the town’s municipal building (Passaic Township; in November, 1992 the voters elected to change the name of the municipality to Long Hill). It functioned as that until 2003. Long Hill received grants beginning in 2010 to restore the exterior and interior of the building. It was listed on the @nationalregisternps in March 2012. Long Hill’s Office of Emergency Management began operating out of one of the building’s rooms in 2019. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #history #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #architecture #archi_ologie #morriscountynj #millingtonnj #longhillnj #nrhp #townhall (at Millington, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CM-3tcbjyO8/?igshid=1ch31uv13wro7

A German half-timbered #barn at the Baker–Duderstadt Farm in Warren Township, #NewJersey. The barn was built in the mid-nineteenth century and features a #Jerkinhead roof. The barn is significant as a rare Mid-Atlantic example of German construction featuring Fachwerk and a Liegenderstuhl roof truss. This type of construction was more common in German settlements in Wisconsin, Texas, and Missouri and there are no other known examples surviving in New Jersey. The property was continuously farmed by members of the Baker-Duderstadt family for almost 150 years. The Baker family immigrated to America in the early 1840s from Germany. They are attributed to owning the property at the time that the barn was constructed. In 1998, the property was deeded to Somerset County as open space. The grounds are also host to the Baker–Duderstadt farmhouse, built in the early twentieth century, a modern cinder block storage shed, a nineteenth century corn crib, and a large banked barn that was built in the twentieth century. The original Matawan, #NewJersey train station with Carpenter Gothic and Stick style elements, which opened in 1875. The station was used until 1982 when a newer station opened. Looking at the #steps that lead to the remains of Kay's Cottage, now part of the Kay Environmental Center property in Chester, #NewJersey. Elizabeth D. Kay (1894-1987) and her husband Alfred were known for their contributions to horticulture, conservation, humanitarian causes, and the arts. Their property, Hidden River Farm, was donated for use as a park and environmental center. The Kays created carriage trails through the fields and woods that wind down to the Black River where a dam was built to create a swimming pool with a diving board. A summer house was built (can't find a year but probably around the 1930s) alongside the ‘pool’ with showers, changing rooms, a fireplace, and a terrace. Today, only the #ruins remain. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #archi_ologie #architecture #stone #kayscottage #morriscountynj #chester #chesternj #beautifuldecay #kayenvironmentalcenter #nature (at Kay Environmental Education Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMs3PMcjJcE/?igshid=bexo6129hepo

On May 27, 1778, the Burrowes Mansion was raided in Matawan, #NewJersey by the local Loyalists. John Burrowes, Sr. was a wealthy grain merchant living in what was then known as Middletown Point. The Burrowes were patriots, with son John Burrowes, Jr. becoming a Major of the militia and serving in the Continental Army. Upon hearing that Burrowes Jr. was returning home to visit his wife, Loyalists began to plan an attack. As the Loyalists came upon Borrowes' millpond, they were met with opposition. While fighting broke out, mills, boats, storehouses, and other buildings along the waterfront were set ablaze. A detachment of loyalist troops continued their march to the Burrowes Mansion. However, Burrowes had received word that the British were coming for him and local tradition holds that he escaped through a rear window of the home. It is said that he was in such a rush that he left a boot behind. Burrowes ran across the backyard and swam across the creek, seeking safety in the thick woods on the other side. According to David Forman's written manuscript, John Burrowes, Jr. hid in the woods for two days without food to avoid detection. The home was built circa 1723 and added to the @nationalregisternps in 1972. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #history #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #architecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #monmouthcountynj #matawan #matawannj #revolutionarywar #revwar #burrowesmansion (at Burrowes Mansion Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMgCQIeDmYc/?igshid=1x0q7v527k430

Battery Gunnison, known as Battery New Peck following its modernization in 1943, at Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook in #NewJersey, now part of @gatewaynps. Battery Gunnison was built in 1904 as a reinforced concrete, Endicott Period battery with two six inch M1903 “disappearing” guns to protect New York City from naval attack. It was named in honor of Captain John Williams Gunnison, a US Army topographical engineer. In 1943, the “disappearing” guns were removed and the battery was modernized with two 6" M1900 pedestal mounted rifles from Battery Peck, also located at Fort Hancock. It was then used as an examination battery, which meant that it fired a warning shot at a ship that was not authorized to enter New York Harbor before shooting to destroy. Battery Gunnison/New Peck was deactivated in 1946. Since 2003, the battery has been under the careful #restoration of the Army Ground Forces Association, a non-profit living history group. They regularly open the interior of the battery for tours (during non-COVID times). #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenj #OptOutside #FindYourPark #architecture #archi_ologie #sandyhook #gatewaynps #militaryhistory #visitnj #batterygunnuison #batterynewpeck (at Battery John Gunnison / New Fremont Peck) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMaz6RYDCHa/?igshid=1pykz7wylg5cy
