It has been 14 hours since I found out that, according to Kubo, Byakuya calls Renji by his given name "because Rukia does" and I am obsessed with this information.

This is both the best and worst possible answer to this question. I feel like if you asked Byakuya, this is exactly the reason he would give. However, if Rukia were present, she would lose her damn mind. While I do think Rukia's assertion that Byakuya didn't look at her even once in 40 years is hyperbole, over that time I can imagine Renji's name coming up in conversation once, maybe twice tops.

Like, two weeks before she goes on her fateful mission to the Living World, B's been shortlisting Vice-Captain candidates, and over dinner, real casual:

B: Rukia. You know your friend?

Rukia: My who now?

B: That friend of yours who shouts too much. The boorishly tall one. With the red hair. Is he in Squad Eleven now?

Rukia (wracking her brain frantically for people Byakuya would consider 'her friend'): You mean Renji?

B: Yes, him.

Rukia: What about him?

B: Is he in Squad Eleven? The Sixth Seat?

The next day, Byakuya's office, Renji shows up for his job interview.

B: You must be Renji.

aka how to support libraries and get books and audiobooks for free without pirating them.

disclaimer: this is so easy. it is also really fun.

one: download the libby app. you'll open it and it'll ask you to add a library.

two: get a library card. don't have one? good news, it's really easy and i am saying this as the laziest person on earth. it varies what you need to have to get a card library to library but almost all libraries will let you get one online. i have a card for my home town and for the town i moved to. sometimes you only need an email address, sometimes you need an area code. to get mine it took me about 5 minutes of lying on the couch aimlessly tapping on my phone. follow your heart. you can get cards for places you don't currently live. i will leave the ethics of that up to you but it's probably better than pirating and either way you're creating traffic for libraries which is what they need to exist.

three: add your card. you can add multiple cards for multiple libraries. you need the number. i have never had libby fail to recognize a valid account.

four: search for your book! some will be ready to borrow right away. others have an estimated delivery time. libby will always pick the one that's the fastest from the options available at all the libraries you have cards at. you can borrow audiobooks and ebooks. libby will send you a notification when you're book is ready to borrow. in my experience it's a lot faster than the estimate. if you aren't ready to read it, you can ask to be skipped over in line so you keep your place at the front but let someone else read it first.

five: read it!!! kindle is the most common way to do this. you can go to your loan and click read with kindle. it'll download it to all your devices where you have kindle. as long as you have the loan, it'll act like your book. when the loan ends, if the device is connected to the internet, it'll automatically be returned. it will save all your notes and highlights. (if you disconnect your device from the internet, it won't return the book. weewoo.)

anyway in case anyone else has been wondering about it, i really love it. is a nice surprise to see what i'm going to get and it's cut my reading costs down big time! it's also neat because i get to synch my books between devices unlike downloading books through cough cough other means. good luck!

A Quick Update (for the two people who may actually give a flying monkey's.)

First of all, happy Easter to those who celebrate, a belated Ostara to my witchy friends, and a general "hello!" to all and sundry.

The past 8 months have, quite honestly, been a total rollercoaster for me. I have started my immunotherapy treatment for chronic migraine and it has truly changed my life.

About 10 days after my first injection, I left a 12 year relationship which, in retrospect, was an incredibly unhealthy situation and I haven't looked back.

My treatment has been so successful that I am now back working full-time in a physically demanding job after 7 years of being unable to do anything as a fully functional human being. For the first time ever, I am able to start learning to drive. (Fenland residents: consider yourselves warned.)

All in all, I am the happiest and healthiest I have been in an incredibly long time.

And on that note, all of my stories are very much at the forefront of my mind, I am just living in a constant state of chaos and not currently able to sit down properly to actually write up my notes. (Not to mention the dire lack of a working laptop.) So bear with me, I'm hoping to be back in the game drectly.

I think the biggest misconception abled people have about disabled people's pain is that it feels like normal pain everyone has felt before, and that you can get used to it and grow a tolerance like normal pain.

ITS NOT LIKE THAT

Here's an example, when I was 12 I got a daith piercing in my ear, It was the worst pain I had ever felt. I felt like someone was trying to crush my skull.

Then I became disabled, And that became the worst pain I ever felt. My joints felt like they were literally on fire almost constantly for over 3 years. It NEVER felt less painful.

Last year I had to get my daith repierced, it felt like a tiny pinch.

The constant chronic pain I feel has increased my tolerance for normal pain, but you cannot increase tolerance for chronic pain. It is always excruciating at worst, very uncomfortable at best, the pain never hurts less. You just learn how to accept it and strengthen your mind enough to think past the pain. YOU CANNOT GET USED TO CHRONIC PAIN. That's why we can't "push through it", or "toughen up". It's not normal pain, your brain is literally confused and forces you to feel pain because it thinks you're extremely injured.

Imagine burning your arm on something reeaaally hot, now imagine the burning sensation you feel is inside your muscles and joints and not on the surface on your skin, now imagine feeling that 24/7 and you can't get rid of it. That's what I'm dealing with man. Do you abled people get it now??

how am i supposed to be normal about renruki. how am i supposed to be normal about a ship that has a chapter titled “the star and the stray dog”. a ship that consists of two people who grew up together, buried dear friends together and considered each other family long before they got married. a ship where we witness renji stare at the hand that let his love go, showing us that he always regretted not objecting rukias adoption. a ship where both parties are so hurt by their parting that they can’t even bear to make eye contact for decades. a ship where the stray dog (a commoner) is solely climbing the ranks in order to talk to the star, who is now a part of a noble clan. a ship where the rukia is shown curling up into renjis chest and crying in relief. a ship where the two parties are each other’s past, present, and future. a ship where both parties entered the shinigami academy in order to have a better life and got exactly that in the very end. a ship that made a beautiful daughter whose name means “happy home” in japanese flower language

Old Man Ken shows up later, when they go to see fireworks. I can only assume this is a different scam for avoiding liquor licensing/taxes.

Swooping in like the drama queen he is, just grabbing his babies and sprinting them to safety, but also making sure to smash Renji's body against every solid surface from point A to point B (because, why not?). I can literally hear the sounds of Renji's grunts of pain while Ditty for Daddy is playing in the background.
