Back to Basics || Stark and Rogers
It had been too long since Tony had been down to the compound.  The last time he was there, he was saying goodbye to the team, and going on his own to potentially start a family with Pepper.  He hadn’t really expected to go back.  The Avengers would do their thing, and Tony would throw some money at them every now and then.
But that whole plan had backfired pretty quickly, and it was time that he went back.  The flight down was never bad, but the nerves were eating him up.  He didn’t know why he was so nervous, it was his building.  It was full of people that he knew and loved, so there was really no reason for him to be nervous.
Even still, he found his heart pounding in his chest as he drove up to the compound.  He got out and walked up, smiling as he saw Steve waiting there for him.
“Hey there, Capsicle.  Long time no see.” he said with a grin.  “How’s my building doing?  Treating you well?”

Tony laughed a bit and downed his own drink.  It wasn’t the first time he’d drink to his fucked up childhood, and it definitely wasn’t the last, but it was comforting nonetheless.  Her words were almost too familiar and he grimaced at them with a nod.
“It’s like you’re reading my damn mind, kid.” he said with a forced smile.  He frowned at that, and shook his head before correcting himself.  “Kate.  Not kid, forgot sorry.  I’m just so used to everyone being half my age.  I’m like your grandfather, jeez.  When I was your age, you weren’t even born yet.”

As much as ten guns pointed at them sucked, he was happy for the change of subject, and let Phil duck around the corner as the men started to shoot at him.  He wasn’t worried, they were just bullets and wouldn’t do much damage to the armor.  He scanned the area, having FRIDAY assess what was in the crates before forming a plan.
“How many men do you have in here?  I could just blow up the crates and that would take care of the weapons, and these guys.” he called over to Phil, raising his arm to take out a particularly annoying assailant.  “I can make another plan if you want, but that’s the easiest one at this point I think.”

Tony laughed uncomfortably, waving off the question.  If Clint actually knew the amount of pressure he felt to work of his crushing debt to society, he’d run for the goddamn hills and never look at Tony again.  Which was not a good way to have your teammates thinking about you.  So he let the moment pass and watched expectantly as he picked up the bow.
He had done his best to make it as light as possible.  He knew little to nothing about medieval arrow slingers, so he didn’t know if the weight had anything to do with it.  He had done his research, and made what he thought was a pretty aerodynamic bow.  But then again, he wasn’t he expert.
He watched with a wide grin as Clint reacted to the bow and shook his head with a chuckle.  “I hope for both of our sake, you’re talking to the bow.  I don’t want your French beau-hunk to set his legion of cats after me.” he said with a chuckle and sat down to watch Clint shoot.

Tony narrowed his eyes as she spoke.  It was a dangerous line to walk down, he had obviously not been a great father, but he was also pretty sure she didn’t want him shit talking her father.  He was the same way, whenever anyone tried to shit talk Howard, he got extremely uncomfortable.
So he just nodded sadly.  “I’m sorry.  I get it.  I’m like the poster boy for rich kid with Daddy Issues.” he said with a sad little chuckle.  He pulled out two glasses and a new bottle of scotch, pouring them each a drink.  “We already drank, but hey.  Here’s to shitty dads.” he said with almost a kind smile.

Tony laughed and nodded.  There was the underlying thought of hoping that he didn’t go on anymore trips away.  He needed Bruce there to balance out the crazy.  He smiled gently and nodded.  “All I need is some candy and maybe a good bottle of foreign alcohol, and I’m happy.” he said with a little grin.
He watched Bruce walk around the lab and walked over to open some things up.  “No new murder bots.  I did update FRIDAY to modern databases, Steve had been running it like it was the 40s again...” he said with a little shrug.  “Not much, I’ve really just been staying low.  Pepper dumped me.  That’s about as exciting as it gets.” he said with a little shrug.

Tony shrugged.  He didn’t really want to talk about Pepper, it put a damper on his mood.  He didn’t answer Phil right away, because he wasn’t doing okay.  But the other didn’t need to know that.  “I’m fine.” he said, the mask thankfully deleting any emotion from his voice.
He raised an eyebrow at his words and rolled his eyes.  Okay, so maybe he was right, but Tony was distracted and shocked and he didn’t have time for this.  “I’m just trying to make sure my weapons don’t get in the hands of the wrong people.” he said with a little nod.
They rounded a corner to about ten men with guns protecting two crates with the Stark Industries logo on it.  “Shit.” he said softly as they all raised their guns, and Tony got ready to fight.

Tony narrowed his eyes as she reacted to the name.  That was a familiar reaction.  So mentioning the dad was something not to do, then.  Got it.  He knew he’d be uncomfortable if Kate brought up Howard.
“Yeah, we stopped working with him a few years before I made the suit.  We switched to clean energy the year afterward.” he said with a little nod.  “Hey, if it makes you feel better, he was almost as difficult to work with as Justin Hammer was.  Not that it would make you feel better.  I dunno.  Never mind.”  He waved his hand, knowing that probably wasn’t a great thing to say.  But he always got uncomfortable when he got close to talking about things that were very personal.
