𝐵𝑒𝓈𝓅𝑜𝓀𝑒 𝒪𝒶𝓀 𝐸𝒶𝓈𝑒𝓁 𝒫𝒾𝒸𝓉𝓊𝓇𝑒 𝒮𝓉𝒶𝓃𝒹 This was a long time in the making, not because it took me a long time to make, but because i had to wait a long time for the oak due all that has been going on in the last few months. - I was asked by a really lovely cornish lady, if i could make an easel picture stand suitable for a one off resin & ply picture. - Air dried oak was my timber of choice, i wanted to make it a little different to the ‘normal’ easels you see, so shaped the legs and came up with an idea for the hinge and to also to not have a chain or string to keep the legs from opening any further than needed. - I used a brass counter flap hinge,sourced from Ironmongerydirect, set in on the underside, which although not immediately visible, looks nice i think & provides a strong hinge point. I set the hinge in a bit lower down, shaped and angled the tops of the legs so that when opened, the top sections meet and thus cannot open any further. This posed a couple of headaches! One was working out the angles for it to all work, the second was to get it all together and to get the screws in! With the hinge on the underside i had to be mindful of how far the legs needed to open as well as having just enough clearance to get the screws in! 𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓮𝔀𝓼! I wanted to share this post, it is not sponsored or endorsed , just what i did, why i did it, and my own opinions! - Today i carried out a little repair to one of my garden gates, it had come under a bot of abuse from the kids and wind damage. - What was going to be a quick job refixing two of the pickets, turned into replacing all the screws! - Now i only threw these gates together and had no intention of them being used for years and years, but, i did use a very well known and used wood screw brand, And have to say i was suprised at how fast the screws had corroded in a relatively short period of time. - The screws i had used were gold in colour, wax coated and supposedly corrosion resistant, but a year later tells a different story. - Even though the screws were painted over, the rust had started to show through, so i chose to remove and replace them all with Reisser cutter screws, which are gold tropicalized, so i hope and assume these will perform better. - I like the cutter screws for their ability to ‘bite’ in, pull in smooth and fast & self countersink cleanly. I haven’t had one strip a head or snap yet. They come with two free PZ2 bits in the tub, but they will wear down before you will get through all the screws, but what do you want for free! The tubs (this one is 4.0x40mm 1200 pcs) are a good size, made of strong plastic and even have a screw measure on the lid! - I think screws can often be compromised in relation to profits, i have often come across jobs were i have tried to remove a screw and it had a stripped head, rusted out or snapped trying to remove it. Using right type of screw for the application whether it be size, coating or type, is important, i always bin the screws that come with things like brackets & equipment as more often than not they are just cheap fixings that are soft and will rust! - So that’s my opinion, what screws do you use? Day 1 of Rob & Barry’s @barry_pigeon Roadtrip! Being as the trade show over in cologne has been postponed due to the 😷 virus, we decided to do a little roadtrip and visit a few of our friends who just happen to work at some of the best companies! Yesterday saw us embark on our little tour and first stop was @bigwipes ! Visiting the infamous big yellow house has always been on my list! 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 Marcrist kindly sent me out one of their quick keyless angle grinder flanges to try out and use with their awesome 850 series cut off discs. This is the first time i have used a keyless flange on an angle grinder, and i now want another for my other grinder! I know these are nothing new, and there are other manufacturers making these, but the quality of this Marcrist flange is spot on. Having the ability to swap out discs easier and faster is more productive, And also cuts down time looking for that misplaced flange key! The keyless flange has a knurled outer edge for grip, and a sprung base with dimpled surface to resist vibration and hold the disc securely. Nice little job today, making a cupboard to fit underneath an existing sink and top. As the existing top was not level, first job was to remove all supports and level out the top before i could take any measurements for the cupboard. All fixings were pocket holes from the inside using the @kregjig K4, so no visible fixings externally. Internal shelf has a soft wood lip to protect against knocks. I used @swankyscribe to get the skirt scribes nice & tight. Last weekend i decided to rip out this trim from our stairs at home, in my on going never seemingly ending quest to banish any gloss wood work, i decided to made a new trim. I had a couple of pieces of Howdens burford contemporary architrave, and come up with a wrap around idea that i thought would look & finish nicer. Today’s job! To add a couple of matching cupboards and a new worktop. @howdensjoinery over in Newquay supplied me with a 600 drawerline base, 500 wall unit, pelmet, doors and drawer front, new worktop and end panel. The base unit wasn’t an issue to fit, just a small cut out at the back for pipes, but the wall unit was a headache! A smaller unit would have fitted easier, but lose storage space and would mean a large filler panel. I had to cut 15mm off the corner to get the unit to fit snug . There were also pipes to contend with at the back of the unit, which meant a small cut out at the back. The @hultafors dry marker came into its own for marking through the back of the carcass, while @swankyscribe took care of scribe marking duties! Spent this morning running around looking for and collecting materials, then this afternoon on a bunch of maintenance jobs at a house and a flat for a client. Had to replace a handle and latch with a new handle and bathroom sash lock as the old one jammed and trapped someone in! 😆 Did a bunch of small maintenance jobs (in my stories) and also fitted some heavy duty trellis to a garden fence. So a year ago I decided to go self employed and turn my Instagram name & logo into a business! A year on, im still here! They say the first 18 months are the hardest for any business. Having come from working for a company for a solid 18 years, used to working with the same people and apprentice, starting up on my own was a intimidating and doing it the other side of the country and not knowing anyone, scary! CCTV Upgrade So the end of last week saw me drive up to Uxbridge to upgrade and install a new cctv system on a farm for my good ol mate @barry_pigeon . As the farm is used more as a commercial yard and with quite a bit of traffic entering & exiting, we opted to install a number plate recognition camera Hikvision DS-2CD4A26FWD-IZS/P, x6 DS-2CD2385G1-I dark fighter turrets, and a DS-7616NI-K2/16P NVR with 4TB to give a good all round surveillance. As the system was installed across several different buildings, some of the cable routes required a catenary wire to support the cables between buildings. We took the opportunity to improve the lighting by the main gate too, by installing a new post & x2 led flood lights from @screwfix_uk controlled by a photocell, to cover the gate and yard. A massive improvement over the old analogue system! Thats a wrap! Completed our relight of @staustellmarkethouse late this afternoon, and i am very happy with the results! 😎 Myself and my main man Paul worked solidly to get this cracked out in two days, all new @collingwoodled 100w led floods (color temp changeable) , replaced all old jb’s and connections with @wiskaukltd boxes, new glands, and a lot of @wagolimited connectors! This is part of a much bigger renovation project to give some much needed tlc and breathe some new life into this iconic local building. This is a fantastic space with a huge amount of character & history. It is also starting to become a hub for makers and creatives!
