On Sunday 4 March, 2024, Balenciaga staged their Winter 24 show at PFW.
The catwalk was a kaleidoscope of vibrant colour, surrounded by floor to ceiling (and floor AND ceiling!) art house images, videos, fashion, interviews, and art compilations.
The audience was treated to a foray of daring and beautiful pieces that are quintessential Balenciaga - as well as a few satirical pieces featuring the eBay logo - poking fun at the huge Balenciaga resell market on eBay! There were also some everyday wearable items, like oversized bomber jackets, luxe longline coats, wide leg trousers and hoodies.
The metaphorical black sheep of the fashion family, Balenciaga seems to be enjoying itself a whole lot more. It gives zero f*cks about fitting in, and is, at its core, its most glorious when living outside the norm.
An emotional show. One steeped in artistic reverence. Wonderful shapes and shadows stalked the wooden boards of the catwalk. Models leered. Drama. Movement. Dickensian; think the darkened alleys of Victorian London. Expressive pieces reminiscent of McQueen, and the quintessential aesthetic of the Galliano we've come to know.
Winter is rainy season in California, and ironically when I do all my gardening. I just love how lush and green everything becomes with the winter rain 💧🌿🌼🌷
Phrosine and Melidore, c. 1789, attributed to Constance Mayer
Museum of Art and History, Bayeux
In Gentil Bernard’s sensual and tragic poem of the same name, the young Phrosine, at right, falls in love with Mélidore, but her jealous brothers separate the two and banish Mélidore to a life as a hermit on a nearby island. Desperate to see her beloved, Phrosine swims across the channel at night, and collapses, naked, into her lover’s arms.
