“Honestly, I think she grows tired of our company. It is a constant company, after all. So my time away is as much for her as it is for myself. She and I are far too used to our solitude by now.” She offered a smile towards Santino. “How have you faired recently? And Eric? Is he well?”

A soft chuckle escapes the ancient’s lips. “Yes, we are well enough. Mekare grows even more restless than I, but I cannot just let her roam about unprotected.” Having the weight of an entire species on one’s shoulders certainly did nothing for the stress levels. “I believe she is coming to resent that fact.”
He nodded slowly. “No, you are right to keep her close by.” His tone was carefully diplomatic but the truth was that the idea of Mekare left to her own devices did not sit well with him. She had never harmed him, let alone taken much note, but she was something of a wildcard in her own right.
“Her resentment must be taken in stride then. Surely you and Khayman are keeping her good company.”

“Well, I was already here... and I find myself curious about you.” Maharet remains a suitable distance away. “Though I do find myself looking for other elders to gain their input on things. A pity you would rather sit in your castle alone than join the world...”
Why do you fear Maharet?
He made a face at the inquire, his forehead wrinkling lightly in distaste. “... Maharet is unpredictable. She holds the concept of order in high regard, but one can hardly guess the schemes behind her actions. She is a wise, focused woman.” The respect in his speech was evident, but his voice became quiet. “I would rather maintain my distance from her.”

“So you would never seek to know me? To try and ‘guess’ at these schemes that you think I have?”

Maharet glances over at Santino as he joined her and she smiles softly. “Hello, dear one.” She inhaled slowly. “I had to get away for a spell, lest I become overwhelmed. It is difficult to remain pinned down so - unable to roam freely if I so desire.”
Santino walked up to her at a slow, ambling pace  and smiled back. “I see where Eric gets it from,” He joked, his head ducked. “I understand how you feel, however. It has become… strangling at times. But you are well? Your sister as well?”

The witch could honestly say she had never expected the former spirit to agree with her. She watched him, slowly resuming her circling of the former spirit. You did not kill me the first time. Your hands were too tightly bound in Akasha. Khayman made the choice on his own, or are you claiming that you were in his mind then as well? She watched him fret over this burden he bore. The idea of a new form was only getting more tempting with each word his spoke. To eat food again... to be able to speak. Actually speak.
He was willing to go against the council? His beloved council? For her? She tilted her head, stopping as he leapt to his feet and began pacing. Reminding her of herself when Maharet had tried to confine her to the compound. She tilted her head, watching as he approached her, drying tears from his cheeks. She reached up, wishing that she could touch him.
What quarrel do I have with them? The one who ripped my head from my body lives no more. At least, that was her understanding, that Lestat had torn Rhoshamandes apart. She reached up, hand hovering over Amel’s features slowly, tilting her head as if studying him. I will do as you ask.
