Neil, do you like the 1986 Little Shop of Horrors movie? If so, what's your favourite song from it, and which ending do you prefer? (Bonus question, have you ever met Steve Martin?) Thanks, hope you're having a good week!
I like it but I do not love it. I love the Theatre Play (and saw it with Ellen Greene in London in 1983 or early 1984) and have seen it brilliantly done and less brilliantly, and always loved it.
I think the reshot ending is a better ending for that movie than the original version. (It always works onstage because these are actors and we know they didn’t die. In the movie they are our heroes and they can’t die.)
Favourite song, depends. Today it’s Somewhere That’s Green because I watched a video of Jinkx Monsoon performing it last night.
I met Steve Martin in 2007 at the Town Hall in New York when we were both reading at the PEN America Event. I remember hanging out with him and Don deLillo and Salman Rushdie at one point but no longer remember whether we were doing anything more than making awkward author small talk.

He wanted to say Welcome to Ray’s Occult Books, open until midnight on the full moon - I’m afraid we’ll be closing soon.
“Welcome to Ray’s Occult-” the words caught in his throat. He would recognize that yellow slicker anywhere along with the blonde head emerging from under the hood.
Cosette Richards.
Of all the gin joints in all the towns - after five years - she walks into his.
As if nothing happened.
Like she hadn’t disappeared off the map, nigh forgotten by colleagues and gone without a trace.
He was elated to see her.
He was FURIOUS.
“We close at midnight.”

Neanderthals probably had insane pull. They were like “I am taking care of my grandma since she hurt her foot. Look at this beautiful cave painting I made.” and early modern humans were like “You are so refreshingly compassionate and make beautiful art. Your stocky frame, huge head and chinlessness have seduced me. Let’s interbreed and create offspring that will have unique autoimmune problems for thousands of years to come.”

I'm trying to write a post about tick safety and avoiding tick bites, but a lot of the info on websites is like "Avoid going in the woods, in plants, and where there are wild animals" and "Activities like hiking and gardening can put you at risk" and I'm like thanks! This is worthless!
As ticks and tick borne illnesses are expanding their range, I think it's important for people to be educated about these things, and I think it's especially important to give people actual advice on how to protect themselves instead of telling them to just...avoid the natural world
Rough draft version of Tick Advice:
Ticks don't jump down on you from trees, they get on you when you brush against grass, brush, bushes etc.
Ticks get brought to an area when they get done feeding from an animal and fall off them. In the USA, the main tick-bringing animal is deer, but I've seen plenty ticks on feral cats and songbirds.
Ticks get killed when they dry out so drier areas with more sunlight are less favorable to ticks.
The above is useful for figuring out whether an area is likely to have lots of ticks, and how vigilant you have to be in that area.
Wear light-colored, long pants outside. Tuck your pants into your socks, and tuck your shirt into the waist of your pants. Invest in light, breathable fabrics idc
IMMEDIATELY change out of your outside clothes when you come back from a tick-prone area, wash them, and dry them on high heat to kill any ticks that might be stuck on.
Shower and check yourself for ticks after coming inside. Hair, armpits, and nether regions in particular. You can use a handheld mirror or rely on touch; an attached tick will feel like a bump kinda like a scab
While you're outside, you can just periodically check for ticks by running your hands down your legs and checking visually to see if anything is crawling on your clothes. Light colors make them easy to spot, and they don't move fast.
Combing through each others' hair to check for creepy crawly critters is a time-honored primate ritual and is not weird. When hiking, bring a friend who will have your back when you feel something on your neck and need to know if it's sweat or a tick
If you're careful, you can usually catch ticks before they bite you, but if one does bite you, it's not the end of the world. Since tickborne diseases are different regionally i suspect this advice will differ based on where you are, but the important thing is remove the tick with tweezers (DON'T use butter, a lit match, or anything that kills the tick while it's still attached, please) and contact a doctor to see what to watch for. Most illnesses you can catch from ticks are easily treatable if you recognize them when symptoms first appear

this has been said before but I also think that part of the problem is that we need to stop seeing “misogynist” and “transphobe” and “ableist” etc as IDENTITIES and start seeing them as ACTIONS and WORLDVIEWS that cause a specific type of harm

Quick Important PSA
Fandom has been taking down those extremely intricate and helpful GameFAQs text guides because they're a terrible company run by rat bastards, so if you care about archiving those old guides for a smoother experience on the earliest generation of games, i've linked prograc's archive of just about every single one you can think of. make sure to download the whole 7z file (its ~2GB), as this is undoubtedly the most accurate and useful tool for anybody wanting to experience video game history.

i'm sorry but i don't think we should call this the "autism website" when there's still posts with tons of notes mocking people who:
struggle with social skills / have anxiety around social settings
are unemployed / unable to work certain jobs
have intense or "age-inappropriate" interests
haven't had certain life experiences that are deemed universal/essential
struggle with personal hygiene
don't have any friends or dating experience
don't go outside much or at all
take things literally / don't get sarcasm/jokes
have unusual ways of speaking
generally aren't "normal"

When you're autistic, it's impossible to miss how much society normalizes child abuse.
I could dedicate my entire life to studying how to interact with people and I'd still never master the social skills that young children are expected to have on command.
Say the wrong thing? That's disrespectful and you're punished. And you don't even have to actually say anything wrong. Pretty much anything you say can be considered "giving lip" if your parent wants some excuse to punish you. But if you say nothing, then you get punished for ignoring. You also have to calculate your response to their mind game quickly because taking too long to respond is considered ignoring. Also, if you're being wrongly accused of something, saying nothing is considered a confession. And even if you somehow manage to say exactly what your parent wants in exactly the correct tone, they'll still punish you for "sarcasm" or "not really meaning it".

Very important to have friends who enjoy media you don’t personally enjoy, both because having friends with varying interests can help you understand why someone might enjoy something even if it’s not your cup of tea which can help build empathy skills and also because there’s nothing more fun then being able to explain the plots of your respective obsessions to each other and have the other respond with “what the fuck”
