This is such an important line that is so underrated when talking about these two characters.
Because James and Sirius? They could be mean. They could be dicks. They could get carried away and take things too far sometimes just because they could. It does everyone a disfavour to try and deny or downgrade that aspect of them.
But they they were also people who valued kindness, who wanted to be kind, and who were kind, even if they did have lapses in behaviour. It is why they did change with time, how they realized their problematic tendencies and let go of them, how they matured as they got older. At the end of it, James and Sirius were good people who had what it took to become their best selves, and this is shown by how they were so easily loved and fondly remembered by almost everyone who knew them.
Unlike, say for example, someone like Snape, who was also drawn to the kindness in his best friend, but who only valued it as far as it impacted him, and who forever remained a spiteful and cruel man who projected his problems onto the world and did not have it in him to want to change for the better.
