The Crooked Man sits in his tent, chipping away with a pen knife. Surrounding him are marbles and seaglass pieces—no, pebbles—in the vague shapes of a crossbones. He can’t fucking get it right.
He gets the head shape, he gets the skull right, he gets one part of the crossbones, then he hits the knife with the rock just a bit too hard and it pierces the glass fully.
“Fuckin’ A!”
He throws it at a wall of his tent. Then he notices the roots curling around his legs, squeezing just a bit.
He can’t take a breather, so he just stews.
Don’t rush it, Van Brunt. Don’t rush it.
He picks up a new piece of seaglass, and starts sketching the crocodilian skull with charcoal once more.
