He’d stepped close to her, reaching to touch his beast of burden, and Stella felt her entire face get hot. She could smell him, he was so close, lingering of leather and salt air, mingling with the sweet scent of horsehide.
Keep your goddamn self in check, Stella, the man has bigger fish to fry than you.
“Thank you, sir,” she grinned at his offer to ride. “Means a lot to hear you say that. If...it isn’t too much trouble though, you can just call me Stella. ‘Soldier’ isn’t a term I ever thought I deserved.”
The way he said the horse’s name, Plotka, sent a veritable shiver down her spine. Whether he was actually Russian, like the rumours told, or just fluent in the language, his momentary accent was a rush in her ears.
“Thank you, sir,” she grinned, relaxing her salute and picking up the curry comb. “D-Horse is well, needs to have his teeth floated but I reckon he and I will have to have that dance next week. After I see…what’s his name again…DD? The Boss’ dog? ‘Course, I’m more nervous about meeting the Boss than anything.”
She worried that her Southern lilt made her sound unintelligent, but Ocelot, so far, seemed a reasonable man with his own agreeable intonation, so she made no attempts to hide her true voice.
“If…you don’t mind my saying, sir…Plotka has an exceptional saddle base. You must be an excellent rider, especially to have those spurs and not leave a mark. With all due respect…it’s a shame she’s not out more under someone so careful.”

She nearly yelped in surprise, dropping the curry comb in her hand and turning to snap a sharp salute. This was him. And oh, boy, were they ever right about him being terrifying.
“O-Ocelot, sir, I…all due respect, sir, it gets lonesome down here. Horses need stimulation, too. Sir.”
He was…unnecessarily handsome, and his steely eyes felt as through they’d drill directly through her soul. Stella flushed, she knew she had to be from the heat in her face, but her training helped her hold the salute with a straight face. Perhaps she could put his mind at ease a bit?
“Name’s Laughing Jackal, brought on as Lead Veterinarian for this platform. Apologies if handling the animal was out of line, sir.”

“You’d think they would be,” Stella laughed, “Being’s we’re on a metal rig in the middle of the ocean. Still, I guess the bosses have shit all worked out over my head. My job is keep everybody safe and sound.”
She walked in silence for a while, until they reached a door where Stella had to swipe a key card to enter.
“Small animal containment,” she announced over her shoulder, and opened the door to what could have been mistaken for a pet store stockroom. Reptiles, insects, and small mammals lined the walls in transparent “cells,” though all were provided everything they needed to be happy. Stella grinned at her new friend.
“Mammals in the back right: hedgehogs, gerbils, bunnies, etcetera. Just wash your hands between handlings.”

Stella relaxed, still in an “at-ease” soldier’s stance, legs parted and arms held behind her back. She wasn’t taking any liberties with that casual wave.
Still, his tone was...softer...than she’d expected, and whether that made her feel better or worse had yet to be seen.
“Yes, sir,” she nodded, unable to stop the broad smile on her face. “Veterinary dream out here, sir. Boss doesn’t know it, but we’re making some incredible discoveries about behavioral science. I just appreciate being part of the whole thing.”
Casting a glance over her shoulder, she inhaled deeply, with pride and relaxation both; then returned her gaze to her commanding officer.
“What can I do for you today?”

Stop, Stella, stop it, stop it, he doesn’t even know you.
But she couldn’t stop the heat rising in her face as she snapped to a salute for the man who’d wordlessly stolen her heart, the one they all called “Shalashaska.” Stella was thankful she wore fatigues, like the rest of the soldiers and not the doctor’s uniforms–somehow she doubted he was one to respect anything less than a warrior.
She was unsure he even knew who she was, and her emerald eyes fought to maintain contact with his own and not melt where she stood at the helipad for her isolated Eco Platform. There was a storm on the horizon, and he’d more than likely come to inspect her first duty of securing the platform since being hired.
“Ocelot, sir,” she nodded, praying that her face and ears were not as red as they felt. “Laughing Jackal, here to help in any way I can. Sir.”

The makeshift barn in the cargo bay of the Eco Platform smelled like home for Stella, even though Commander Miller had only begrudgingly signed off on “a place to put the shitting horses.” She’d acquired hay, feed, temporary stalls like those at the rodeos she was fond of as a child, along with other necessities.
This morning, early and crisp with salt air mingling in the scent of sweet oats, she fed the bay mare that resided next to D-Horse. It had been said this horse was a favorite of The Other Commander, Ocelot, Shalashaska, The Guy With The Needles.
To Stella, though, a horse was a horse (of course, of course), so she crooned praises against the velvety nose and brushed the animal down, as had become her routine.
“I think,” she mumbled, tiptoeing to reach the animal’s spine, “I might sneak you out for a ride today. How do we feel about that?”

Stella relaxed a bit, dropping her shoulders and smiling once more.
“It’s the bunnies, isn’t it? Every so often someone rambles on down and wants to pet the bunnies. You’re welcome to come sit in the pen with them, but they’re not tame and they might not let you touch ‘em. C’mon,” she added, waving her hand as she turned to a different platform.
“Sorry about the blame, I just...there’s a weird charge in the air and I don’t like it one bit. Silly ol’ me assumed it had somethin’ to do with you. Probably just another lightning storm on the way, I guess.”

“A stun...bra?”
Mama had always said she could raise her eyebrow right up in the middle of her forehead.
“Sorry, Chinchilla, but I didn’t fall off the damn cabbage wagon yesterday. It’s my job to look out for the critters on this platform and if you’re here to play some dumbass prank on them like goddamn White Mastodon and his crew, you can rest assured you’re not gettin’ by me.”
Stella narrowed her eyes and flexed her hand, soldier’s training coming through and ready to engage in CQC if she had to.

She wasn’t about to ask the girl for her real name, since she hadn’t provided it.
“I think there’s some sort of...dartboard process for the names ‘round here,” Stella grinned, trotting up the steps to the main platform. Looking around, though, she didn’t see a case for the Stun Arm, and furrowed her brow once she stood level with Chinchilla.
“So where is it?”
Stun arm? Well, at least that gave her something of an excuse.
“Hi, uh, Stella!” It was odd hearing someone’s actual name; Chinchilla had been glad to ditch her given name. “I’m Chinchilla- Crying Chinchilla. Don’t know why they thought that was appropriate for me.” She shrugged. “Um, something like a… stun arm… thing. I’m on the Medical Team, but… they let me test it out.”

Another laugh from her dry lips, and she replaced the clipboard on the enclosure wall. The girl was above her, behind one of the CAUTION signs for the Carnivore Pen.
“I’m Jackal,” she announced. “Laughing Jackal. Though, you’re welcome to call me Stella. And I can feel that charge, my damn arm hair’s standing on end. You gotta be from R&D, right? Some new stun arm for the Boss or something? I know Commander Miller sends the engineers out here to test every so often.”

Static charge in the air? No way….
“You can come out now,” Stella chuckled, looking down at her clipboard. “I don’t bite, but if you electrocute my animals they might.”

“Commander Miller, sir!”
Despite her veterinary vocation, Stella had always been a soldier at heart, and snapping to the sharp salute in front of the Commander felt good. She rarely got to see him here on the Eco Platform, so his presence felt like something of a special occasion.
It didn’t help that she could also count herself among the many on Mother Base absolutely smitten with the lion-like man; thus, her desire to impress was at an all-time high today.
“Something I can do for you, sir?”
