Thinking about…….. Kotetsu visiting Barnaby at the beginning of ep 19, and making him fried rice.

No but okay what absolutely GETS ME about these two is that they’re like. People who have been through things. Specifically grief and losing someone close to you, and that changing your life irreparably.

At first I thought “wow isn’t it wierd that Kotetsu would continue to leave his daughter and go and just be with Barnaby and try to solve his parent’s murder with him. Why does he do that”

And then it hit me. Both of them lost people close to them. Kotetsu lost his wife due to illness. There’s no culprit to that, no way he could be a hero about it, no criminal to catch.

Barnaby lost his parents to a murderer. A life led for revenge and catching that person, and in the first cour of season one you think “Oh my gosh he did it! He can find peace now! His arc is resolved and he can be happy for once” (I still legit think those 10 months between ep 13 and 14 are the best times of his life, he can finally be himself).

And then comes episode 18 and Krim saying “Haha it was not like that” making the life Barnaby tried to create for himself fall apart. Nothing is as it seems, his memory (the thing he relied on all his life) is faulty, and the culprit is still out there.

Of course it sucks. Barnaby has to start from the beginning, relive his grief and trauma again. Nothing is solved you can’t escape your past.

Except there is a person who has been through similar things. His happy life that he created with his wife and daughter fell apart one day. Nothing is as he wanted, and he has to work and keep his identity a secret from his daughter. But he sees Barnaby and his world fall apart and thinks “Yeah he probably didn’t eat anything in the past day I better go over to his place and make him fried rice”.

Of course Kotetsu himself cannot solve Barnaby’s problems. But he can help in other ways at least by being there and making sure he eats properly. That’s the least he can do.

and you’re like “I want my blorbos to kiss and date” but of course they won’t show them doing that, but when they save civillians one of them is calling for someone and your hetnormativity is like “ah her sister probably” but No they are Girlfriends and the civilian is in despair because they loved a girl and wanted to see them

and then you think “oh okay bg characters are gay” but then there’s the plot of a girl being adopted and you think “oh it’s something bad” but no turns out she was adopted by TWO GAY DADS and is happier and has a decent life because they could offer her that

it’s the way the homosexuality is in the subtext obviously but also casually in the text. How it’s normalized I think.

still not over the picture frame

it’s how they pan to the new picture and how in season 1 you have an establishing shot of Kotetsu’s flat, and a shelf with the pictures. You can clearly see that they are of his wife.

and then in season 2 they did the. they did the. “hey you know the shelf with the pictures, you know this one very well. anyway here’s focus on a new photo with kotetsu, his daughter and barnaby”

and it’s about how kaede’s room is not plastered in barnaby’s photos all over like it was in season 1

and on that picture, barnaby does his signature pose that he does on photos. so probably it was made for kaede. yet it’s in kotetsu’s apartament.

It’s about how you have this one signal in episode one “here’s barnaby he’s let into kotetsu’s life and knows of his daughter and gets along with her. We’ll put this picture next to the photos from kotetsu’s wedding”

and how it’s built up on later in the season. because you know you could have just that one photo, nobody mentioning it. but no in ep 7 we get barnaby really involved in the life of kotetsu and kaede. I’m still not over how she tells barnaby the things she wants because she trusts him and he’s like “Yes this is important but I’m not the one you should tell this to”

it’s just you know one of these little things this anime does so well.

and it’s also how this picture is in his home. in the office he has the picture of him, his wife and kaede. but in his home? where only close people visit? that picture of him barnaby and kaede. literally what.

Every time I remember the picture frame of Kotetsu, Barnaby and Kaede next to Kotetsu’s wedding pictures..... yea how is that real.

I really adore Barnaby as a character tbh. Fusing the rich princely unobtainable guy from shoujo romances with the arrogant loner with a tragic past from a shounen action series to make a guy who gets called “Bunny” by his DILF partner in a seinen superhero workplace anime.
