i learned of “Box beds” – cabinets with beds in them and, sometimes, lockable doors – were used for privacy and safety in parts of rural medieval Europe before individual bedrooms were common. They became fashionable even in homes with bedrooms and remained in use in Scotland into the 1900s (x)

It’s time to stop treating first dates, first kisses, and losing virginity as milestones or rites of passage that must be completed. It’s time to stop expecting these things to happen in everyone’s teen years or even in their twenties. It’s time to stop letting people call themselves “late bloomers” for getting their first kiss at 16. It’s stupid. It’s unnecessary. It’s damaging to people who for whatever reason it may be don’t have romantic prospects or don’t even want to do those things.

CHATEAU D’OR

Information about this remarkable building complex is very scarce. Archaeological research shows that the oldest parts can be traced back to the mid-17th century, but not much of those historical structures can be seen today. The “chateau” is said to be linked to clay mining for the production of bricks. By whom it was originally built and when can no longer be traced. This has to do with the fact that the site was never considered an architectural heritage. This is remarkable, because the building contains some striking historical artefacts, such as a number of bas-reliefs depicting the stations of the cross. Although they did not belong to the original building complex, they were recovered from the chapel of a nearby monastery and incorporated into “his” chateau by the last owner of Chateau d'Or.

The latter owner was a wealthy entrepreneur, who was originally a landscape gardener (which is clear from the layout of the gardens around the castle), but made his fortune in the construction of turf. He lived in the castle for almost seventy years, together with his wife, to whose family the domain originally belonged. The lord of the castle was a well-known figure in the Belgian ‘beau monde’ and regularly received famous guests from home and abroad. Chic parties were regularly organized in the castle. In recent years, however, the chateau and the surrounding domain gradually fell into disrepair, when it proved too difficult for the now very elderly residents to maintain the property. The last lord of the chateau died at the end of 2020, which also sealed the fate of Chateau d'Or. The picturesque castle will disappear under the demolition hammer to make way for yet another very expensive, but soulless residential area with houses of which there are thirteen in a dozen … Eternal shame!
