EARLY ALBUM REVIEW - BEARTOOTH - DISEASE

So far four tracks have been leaked from Ohio-based melodic punk outfit Beartooth off of their upcoming third studio album, Disease. This album comes after over two long years of waiting after the March 2016 release of their second studio album, Aggressive. So far the songs that have been leaked ahead of schedule from the album’s highly anticipated September 28th release are “Infection,” “Bad Listener,” “Disease,” and “Believe.” There is speculation in the band’s fan community that the first song “Infection” was leaked by frontman Caleb Shomo himself to give the band an opportunity to play it on their three-city Warped Tour run.

Overall Tentative Rating: 8/10

Heavy-hitting and Aggressive (pun intended), “Infection” feels like an extension of their widely popular debut album, Disgusting. Shomo starts strong with a bold, screamed verse and heavy guitars. Though the song is solid musically and has its high points, somewhere during the mixing process those high points were lost...

It is rumored that the band decided to forgo a traditional producer in order to give Shomo the freedom to mix the tracks himself. This is especially prevalent in “Infection,” particularly during the chorus where the instruments are very centralized and seem lacking in depth. Though the song sounds flat to headphone-listeners, those listening through standard speakers might not catch the difference. Despite minor production issues, the song is a strong contribution to the album, especially for fans of Disgusting.

As of today, “Bad Listener” was officially released and played on BBC radio. Though the song hasn’t been released on traditional platforms such as YouTube and Spotify, listeners can catch it on the BBC website for early listening right now. “Bad Listener” also echoes the tempo and sound of Disgusting, with more emotional screams from Shomo, blaring guitar riffs and heavy drums. The distorted and deep growl that leads into the chorus lends to the dark, angry atmosphere of the track. However, the studio mixing of the song falls into the same trap of “Infection,” with the instruments sounding too centralized and crowded yet again during the verses and chorus.

During “Believe” and “Disease,” the band changes direction and instead leans toward a more pop-punk sound. Both songs reflect the band’s progress and musical style developed during their previous studio album Aggressive. Slightly lighter and more upbeat than the previous tracks, these two are meant to be more uplifting and hopeful, a welcome contrast to the angry tones heard in “Infection” and “Bad Listener.” Rather than clashing with the overall emotional atmosphere of the album, the songs work together to create a multi-faceted tone.

Overall, the four leaked tracks play well together and appeal to all types of fans. Fans of the more recent Aggressive will enjoy “Believe” and “Disease,” while earlier fans of Disgusting will appreciate the band revisiting their roots in “Bad Listener” and “Infection.” While this is only roughly a quarter of the full tracklist, Beartooth fans can rejoice in the promise of another solid album. While there is still a two month countdown until the official release, listeners can take advantage of the leaked tracks to get their hardcore fix during the long wait.
