Season 1 Episode 1 "The Engagement"
I've watched The Golden Girls for as long as I can remember. But often when I watch it now, I skip the first season. It just feels different than the rest of the series to me. But for this .... thing ..... I'm doing .... whatever it is .... I'll start with the very first episode.
The housekeeper. Cook. Whatever he was. I never understood why he was only on the first episode. I liked him.
One of the most consistent things on this show are the amazing wardrobe choices, perfectly matching each character.
Dorothy is talking about being older. I remember watching this show as a kid and thinking that this was old age. Now the characters in the first few seasons are younger than my mother is now, and it's changed the way I see the ladies. They're nowhere near what I would now consider old. Except maybe Sophia.
Blanche is considering marrying a man, potentially splitting up the ladies on our very first episode. Before we have even gotten the chance to care about their friendship. Do sitcoms still start off like this these days? I don't think I've watched many in the last several years.
Ok, so in this episode Blanche's bedroom is on the other side of the house, near the lanai. Also, I've never heard the word lanai outside of this show. Is it a regional thing?
Sophia's character looks so different in the first season. She acts different too. I prefer the later seasons for her character myself.
Harry. I feel like they used a handful of male characters names on this show. I wonder if they just used popular old guy names, or they had people they knew they were giving a little shout out to.
The cook is back. Drinking on the lanai with Dorothy and Rose. He lived there, I guess. He's in his robe, as are they. Is this normal for people with cooks? I wouldn't know. I've never met a live in cook. Or anyone who could afford one.
Blanche was so pretty. In all honesty, I always wanted to be a Blanche, but I was far more a mix of Sophia and Dorothy.
And Blanche has said yes to Harry. And the wedding is next week. What will happen to the girls? Blanche hadn't thought of that but says they can stay until they can find somewhere else to live. And she walks off to her bedroom that is still on the wrong side of the house.
Ah, the first time we hear about Dorothy getting pregnant out of wedlock, the details of which will change several times over the course of the show. But the hatred of Stan remains. (Dorothy's, not mine. I always liked the Stan character.)
The girls are wearing full faces of makeup while dressed for bed. Sophia's line about peeing at seven every morning but unfortunately, she wakes up at eight is my favorite line in the episode.
Blanche's bedroom. That bed. It's horrible. Blanche deserved better.
Public bathrooms are also hard for me. Luckily, my grandma taught me how to get out without touching anything.
Dorothy putting Rose in a chokehold before throwing her in the closet sets up their relationship for the rest of the show pretty nicely.
Harry is late, and the priest is in a rush. Harry has been arrested. Poor Blanche. She's stunned. Stunned is the only way to describe how stunned she is.
Just once I'd like to sit out on a lanai with a pitcher of water, pouring myself a glass. It looks nice.
Sophia is laying out in the sun with sunglasses on and her purse in her hands. I love how she always carried her purse around, even during the night.
First episode Blanche thought this was her one chance at happiness with a man. Future Blanche had many happy moments with many, many, many men.
The girls are going to stick together after all. What a happy ending.
I feel like they had a lot of the characters down in the first season, even in the first episode. But I think the episodes after they have it all down are far better. I do wish we could have seen more of the cook though. I looked it up. He was originally supposed to be the fourth member of the group, and Sophia was supposed to be a recurring character. I do think they made the correct choice in keeping Sophia as a main character, mostly because she's my favorite. But I digress.
Well, the episode is over. On to episode 2.
