US spec E36 M3s have two different style side skirts. The “Luxury” models have a less sporty non twist design compared to the Mtech twist design. Luxury models had the option to upgrade to the twist design. : Follow our supporters: @keeping_up_with_the_bavarians @2mshiftboots @_futureclassic : #bmw #bimmer #mpower #m2 #m3 #m4 #m5 #ultimatedrivingmachine #e34 #e36 #e28 #e30 #e39 #e46 #e92 #bmwclassic #auto #bmwfamily #bmwnation #funfact #mtech #motorsport #bmwe30 #bmwm3 #bmwe36 #bmwm #bbs #bmwfan #themoreyouknow #8series

Completely agree…and the big uptick in vintage Seiko is fueling so many blatant fraudsters on eBay - in particular Seiko Pogues.

Finally! Someone explains Alcantara
New Post published on BIMMERtips.com
New Post has been published on http://bimmertips.com/what-exactly-is-alcantara/
What exactly is Alcantara?
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
What exactly is Alcantara anyway?
Alcantara is a synthetic, man-made, microfiber fabric similar in look and feel of suede. It was first invented in 1970 by Dr. Miyoshi Okamoto in Japan.
Is Alcantara a generic term for microfiber fabric?
No, Alcantara is a trademarked name. It is a form of Ultrasuede or microfiber fabric which are the generic terms. Alcantara is a specific brand of microfiber fabric Ultrasuede. This is the same as the public use of the word Kleenex, everyone refers to Kleenex as a tissue. But not all tissues are made by the Kleenex brand.
Why is Alcantara now made in Italy if it was invented in Japan?
Purely for marking. Having the name luxurious sounding name “Alcantara” and the fact that it is now “Made in Italy” makes the fabric more exotic and desirable.
What is Alcantara made from?
Primarily made from 65% - 80% polyester, and 35% to 20% polyurethane. Different percentages will depend on the application and product line.
How can you tell real from fake Alcantara?
True Alcantara or Ultrasuede has nearly identical front and back sides. Many fake Ultrasuedes have only the suede-like front with a cotton backing. This is the easiest way to differentiate the two.
Why is Alcantara a better option than leather?
The main benefit of Alcantara is that the fabric does not come from an animal. This not only reduces obvious benefits of killing innocent animals but it allows for larger sizes of fabrics. Where leather is limited to the size of a cow, Alcantara can be made in larger sheets if necessary which would reduce the number of seems needed to cover larger pieces.
Where leather is hard and delicate to clean, Alcantara can be washed in a laundry machine and is not sensitive to most cleaners like leather.
Leather is cold in the winter and hot in the summer, the worst combination you want for a vehicle’s interior. Alcantara, on the other hand, is cool to the touch in the summer and warm to the touch in the winter, really the ideal combination for a vehicle’s interior.
Leather also dries out and cracks when exposed to the sun, it ages terribly over time if not properly maintained. Alcantara is completely resistant to cracking like leather and will not fade from harmful UV rays.
What are more benefits of Alcantara?
50% lighter than leather
Breathes better than leather
Naturally resists stains
Excellent fire retardant qualities (ideal for race seats, gloves etc.)
Highly customizable with colors
Doesn’t “pill” or ball up like a cheap sweater over time
Allows for superb grip (steering wheels, seat bolsters etc.)
What BMW vehicles use microfiber ultrasuede?
Microfiber is primarily found on its M vehicles (M3, M4, M5 etc). The steering wheels, seats, door panels and headliners are the most common places. Many aftermarket BMW M Performance parts also feature this microfiber fabric.
It seems as time goes on and the microfiber fabric is becoming cheaper to manufacture it is finding its way into lower-end vehicles. Not only for BMW but other lower end brands such as Ford, Chevrolet and VW.

Finally replaced the worn-out original 4-spoke steering wheel with a newer 3-spoke steering wheel from an M3 coupe. A visible improvement and as an added bonus, it’s a wee bit smaller (370mm vs 380 on the original), which helps sliding in the car considering the steering column doesn’t tilt #e36 #e36m3 #e36sedan #e36fanatic #e36fanatics #bmwe36 (at Acworth, Georgia)

A few weeks I had the entire rear suspension rebuilt (all new bushings, rear wheels bearings, and speed sensors), plus the entire parking brake system (cables and all), and the rear differential fluid (can you tell the difference by looking at the pic??). As an added bonus, my mechanic replaced the exhaust mounts (part #18 21 0 146 064). Apparently it was almost completely rusted off which explains why the exhaust was hanging off the rear like a baby’s diaper and swinging around like trapeze artist, banging up the heat shield. Many thanks to Brian at Brian’s Motorworks in Acworth GA.

I wonder why the later E36 models went with a thicker (uglier) air bag?

Early model E36 M3s had analog climate controls with dials where the late models were updated to digital climate controls. Which do you prefer? E46 M3 fender vents....non functional?!? 🤯
New Post published on BIMMERtips.com
New Post has been published on http://bimmertips.com/fender-vents-what-is-the-purpose/
Fender vents, what is the purpose?
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
What is the purpose of fender vents?
The main purpose of fender vents is to relieve built-up air pressure from inside the wheel arches which causes aerodynamic lift. Typically, there are air intake openings in the front of the bumper directing air over the brakes to cool them. This air gets trapped in the wheel arches and creates high pressure resulting in lift over the front wheels reducing traction. Relieving this built up high-pressure system in the wheel arches reduces front axle lift thus increasing safety.
Trapped air in the wheel arches also creates aerodynamic drag. Drag is the force of air pushing in the opposite direction of the vehicle, reducing efficiency. Some research suggests wheel arches account for up to 30% of aerodynamic drag of a vehicle. With fuel efficiency ratings becoming increasingly more strict on modern vehicles you can understand why so much attention is being directed towards the reduction of this inefficiency. Efficiently routing air into and out of the wheel arches increases fuel economy through the reduction of drag.
Another benefit of fender vents is to efficiently vent hot air generated by heavy breaking out in the air stream. Quickly relieving hot air generated from the brakes makes room for more cool air to pass over the brakes, thus increasing efficiency. Finally, it is worth mentioning that trapped air in the wheel arches also contributes to cabin noise. Reduction of cabin noise is more pleasant to drivers on long trips reduces driver fatigue.
* For another topic on aerodynamic efficiency and lift reduction, read our article on rear diffusers. It explains what they are used for and how they work, click the link HERE.
Do the fender vents vent hot air from the engine?
No, not on BMWs. Some vehicles tie in the fender vents exhausting hot air trapped under the hood and out the fender but on BMW models the fender vents are not related to venting hot air from under the hood.
Are all BMW fender vents functional?
No. Some are just for show. The E46 M3, for example, has nonfunctional fender vents. The original design was intended to use functional fender vents however the engineering team decided the vents were not needed through testing. The final vehicle design was already approved by the marketing team however and as a result, the fender vents stayed with the design of the vehicle but were made nonfunctional. Since the E46 M3, each subsequent generation M3 has had the fender vents become an iconic design element of the car. The M4, however, does have functional fender vents.
What does BMW call their solution to efficient air flow?
BMW is marketing these new aerodynamic features as “Efficient Dynamics”. “BMW EfficientDynamics is the name of the strategy from BMW to minimize fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while, at the same time, increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a package of functions covering the drive system, energy management, and vehicle concept – and is a standard feature in every BMW.” - BMW.com

WORN&WOUND: Hunting for Vintage Watches in Tokyo
Tokyo’s vintage and second hand watch scene is unlike any other you may have experienced. Its so unique, in fact, that earlier this year Bill Yao of MK II traveled all the way to Japan to do a tour of these shops, which run the gamut from those that focus solely on vintage to those that specialize in modern luxury. He kindly offered to recount his trip for Worn & Wound readers. So check out his story below, and I’ll warn you now; it might end with you booking a flight to the land of the rising sun…
