Dear visitor, thank you for checking out my work. I will try to tell you my story in short through pictures, videos and links to offer you a sensorial experience of some places I've been, and works I like the most. Do check also my clipping page so you can see all the interviews and places I played. I hope you enjoy it! so let's go, bora lá!
Hi :) I’m Thais, this is my favourite portrait taken by a LGTQI+ collective (and my best friend) from São Paulo. Here I am imitating a famous country music singer. I love to play with form and representation, you will see in my works I bounce between experimental, traditional and pop culture. I like to study social manifestations that are complex, contradictory and expose power structures.
I’ve been always questioning what is the role of art making for the all the people(s) and the planet, as I first studied in social movements and traditional communities in which art was not institutionalised as something separated, but rather, part of the comunal life. And public programs.
I come from a Roma family, we are in the whole world, and the Roma immigration to Brazil started in the first years of colonisation. In Brazil, the Roma people has been always present in maroon communities and in it’s more modern versions “ Candomblé Houses”. In Brazil, Roma womxn have it's divine representation in the figure of "Pomba Giras" or Nbongo Nzila and it's intertwined with Brazilian ocultism. The house where I was born is called Redandá and descend from an important lineage connected to the “Quilombo dos Palmares”, one of the biggest autonomous anti-colonial land that has always existed in modern history.
Ok, this was a bit about me, now let’s go into the art works:
The Goldfish Bleeding in Sea of Sharks - Wrestling club, during the years of 22 and 23 was composed by a series of different artistic actions and open events to invite artists, activist, cultural workers and audiences to articulate their positioning regarding to neoliberal ideology in The Netherlands, and in other lands. Dealing with subjects around immigration, anti-racism, queerness and etc, the piece adapts the social nature of Lucha Libre (Latin American Wrestling) becoming a device for the whole of the society to express their inner conflicts re-enacted through humor as a window for imagining future. The show is never the same, having already 4 different versions.
The Goldfish Bleeding performerd at FLAM - Amsterdam, Welcome to The Village Festival - Leewarden, WORM - Rotterdam, Frascati - Amsterdam - De Singel - Antwerp / Stedlijk Museum - in 2022 and 2023 - and is still travelling!
it is very importante for my artistic process to keep a constant dialogue with community work as the audience is part of the final result as well as engaged at every step of the process. The Goldfish Bleeding proposed a series of open discussions, panels and interviews, collaborating with researchers on relevant topics for the piece. Myself and Felizitas, the dramaturg and friend, went in a research trip all the way to Bolivia to collaborate and study with the Anarcho-feminist movement Mujeres Creando.
Listen to the playlist of the piece The Goldfish Bleeding in a Sea of Sharks made by Parisa Madani and Thais Di Marco, with collaboration of Mother Lucía and DJ SUKUBRATZ, participants of the project.
Talk hosted by Mujeres Creando at La Virgen Del Deseo in La Paz, Bolívia , by the artist Thais Di Marco and the team of The Goldfish Bleeding in a Sea of Sharks on decolonisation and depatriarchalization of the arts and its geopolitical implications. April 2023.
