DTS-HD Master Audio logo

DTS-HD Master Audio (DTS-HD MA; known as DTS++ before 2004(1)) is a multi-channel, lossless audio codec developed by DTS as an extension of the lossyDTS Coherent Acoustics codec (DTS CA; usually itself referred to as just DTS). Rather than being an entirely new coding mechanism, DTS-HD MA encodes an audio master in lossy DTS first, then stores a concurrent stream of supplementary data representing whatever the DTS encoder discarded. This gives DTS-HD MA a lossy 'core' able to be played back by devices that cannot decode the more complex lossless audio. DTS-HD MA's primary application is audio storage and playback for Blu-ray Disc media; it competes in this respect with Dolby TrueHD, another lossless surround format. DTS-HD MA has enjoyed the greater share of this market since 2010,(2) with the notable exception of the TrueHD-encoded Dolby Atmos spatial surround format, which is more popular than DTS's competing DTS:X (encoded with DTS-HD MA).

Specifications(edit)

DTS-HD MA can store up to 8 discrete channels of audio (7.1 surround) at up to a 24 bit sample depth and 192 kHz sampling frequency (96 kHz for 6.1 or 7.1 surround).(3) Although DTS-HD MA, and the related DTS-HD, allow virtually any number of channels in the abstract,(4) these limits are imposed for practical reasons of limited storage and bitrate availability. A DTS-HD MA bitstream may have a bitrate no greater than 24.5 Mbps (instantaneous), of which no greater than 1.5 Mbps may be lossy DTS (as per the DTS CA specification).(5)

The Blu-ray specification stipulates DTS-HD MA as an optional codec, which means that some Blu-ray hardware may not decode it. This is the reason for the bifurcated nature of a DTS-HD MA audio stream; DTS CA, unlike its MA extension, is mandatory, so a player that is not MA-capable can automatically default to an MA-encoded disc's base DTS stream and simply ignore the supplementary data.(5)

Surround sound 101. Surround sound, at its most basic, involves a set of stereo front. The DVD-Audio format offers the capability of stereo and surround sound (5.1) playback at higher resolution than the CD (and therefore, higher resolution than DTS too). DVD-Audio uses PCM as the encoding algorithm like the CD, but while the CD is limited to encoding in 16-bit/44.1-kHz PCM, DVD-Audio can offer up to 24/192 in stereo and 24/96 in. DTS-HD MA is encoded in three steps. First, the audio master is fed to a DTS CA encoder, which generates the core (lossy) audio stream. Next, this lossy audio is decoded and compared to the master, with 'residual' data being recorded wherever the two differ. Finally, the residual data is compressed losslessly and merged with the core into one bitstream. A DTS-HD MA decoder simply performs this process in reverse.(7)

DTS-HD MA audio, including DTS:X audio, can be created and edited using DTS's DTS:X Encoder Suite. The DTS-HD Master Audio Suite served the same function before the introduction of DTS:X, and can still be used for DTS-HD MA that does not carry DTS:X.(8)

TOSLINK does not have the bandwidth to carry DTS-HD MA (or PCM in more than 2 channels). A player using TOSLINK audio may output DTS-HD MA as either lossy DTS (which TOSLINK can carry) or downmixed stereo PCM.

DTS CDs are encoded in 5.1 surround sound using the DTS compression algorithm. As such, the fidelity is of lower quality than the sound quality offered by CDs, DVD-Audio discs, and SACDs. DTS CDs are not encoded in stereo. You can play DTS CDs in three ways:

The DVD-Audio format offers the capability of stereo and surround sound (5.1) playback at higher resolution than the CD (and therefore, higher resolution than DTS too). DVD-Audio uses PCM as the encoding algorithm like the CD, but while the CD is limited to encoding in 16-bit/44.1-kHz PCM, DVD-Audio can offer up to 24/192 in stereo and 24/96 in surround sound. In practice, the wordlength (the number of bits per pulse) on DVD-Audio discs can vary, though a 24-bit word is far and away the most prevalent. However, the sampling rate (in kHz) varies widely on DVD-Audio discs. In most cases, stereo tracks are presented in 24/96, but some discs are encoded 24/88.2 or 24/48, and some are encoded at the maximum 24/192. Most surround-sound tracks are encoded at 24/96. The vast majority of DVD-Audio discs offer a high-resolution surround-sound track, and some also offer a high-resolution stereo track as well. LATIN NAME OF THE GENUS AND SPECIES

The Latin name of the novel peach tree variety disclosed herein is Prunus persica (L.) Batsch.

VARIETY DENOMINATION

The inventive cultivar of Prunus persica disclosed herein has been given the variety denomination ‘Galactica’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Prunus persica (peach) grown as a fruit tree for home use and for commercial agriculture. Peach is typically grown for their edible fruit that are used for fresh consumption, or for home canning.

The new and distinct variety of peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) originated as a first generation descendant from a hand pollinated cross of NCN-4 nectarine (non-patented)×a Chinese saucer peach seedling of unknown origin. The NCN-4 parent was used as the female in the hybridization. The original cross was made in 1995 at the North Carolina State University Lake Wheeler Field Laboratory in Raleigh, N.C. The Chinese saucer peach seedling used as a parent is not available in commerce. The NCN-4 parent used in this hybridization was derived from a hand-pollinated cross of ‘Contender’ (non-patented)×‘Fantasia’ nectarine (non-patented) made in 1987 at the Sandhills Research Station, Jackson Springs, N.C. ‘Contender’ was named and released as a peach cultivar by North Carolina State University in 1987. ‘Fantasia’ nectarine was named and released by the USDA-ARS in Fresno, Calif. in 1969.

The seeds resulting from the 1995 controlled hybridization were germinated in a greenhouse at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C. in the fall of 1995 and planted in the field in spring of 1996 at the Sandhills Research Station, Jackson Springs, N.C. These trees, growing on their own roots, first produced fruit in 1998, and one seedling, designated NC98-42, was selected for its large, flat (peento shape) white flesh fruit, attractive red and cream skin color, fruit with high flavor and aroma, early season of ripening, and heavy fruit production. This original plant was growing on its own roots, and demonstrated characteristics identical to those subsequently expressed when propagated on ‘Lovell’ seedling rootstock.

Plants and fruit of this new variety differ from its parents. The new variety produces white flesh fruit that are larger, more attractive, earlier in ripening, and firmer than the Chinese saucer peach parent. Fruit of this new peach variety demonstrate the flat, saucer shape character, distinguishing it from the ‘Fantasia’ nectarine parent. Few saucer shaped (peento) peaches are available in commerce. ‘Galactica’ ripens 7-10 days later than peento cultivar ‘Stark's Saturn’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 5,123), released by Rutgers University and Stark Brother's Nursery in 1985. ‘Galactica’has different flesh color (white vs. yellow) and higher flower bud chilling (dormancy) requirement (800 hours vs. 250 hours ) than peento cultivar ‘UFO’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 13,352), released by the University of Florida in 2002.

During the year 1999, the original plant selection was propagated asexually by grafting of vegetative buds onto the standard peach seedling rootstock cultivar ‘Lovell’. Grafting was performed by Mr. Daniel Ferris, at his nursery in Huntland, Tenn. The five trees of the variety grafted by Mr. Ferris were established in test plots at Sandhills Research Station in 2000. The new variety has routinely been asexually multiplied by grafting, specifically ‘T’ budding. It readily forms a graft union with peach ‘Lovell’ rootstock and resumes normal growth. During all asexual propagation, the characteristics of the original plant have been maintained. Grafted trees on ‘Lovell’ rootstock exhibit characteristics identical to those of the tree on its own roots, and no aberrant phenotypes have appeared.

Test plantings and performance evaluation over seven years at the Sandhills Research Station demonstrate this variety to be relatively consistent in its characteristics even under the different growing conditions associated with yearly climatic variation.

Plants of the new variety are very vigorous and grow rapidly after establishment of trees in the field. Young trees have averaged 2-3 feet of growth per year. Plants are semi-upright in growth habit. Flowering sometimes occurs in the second year of growth, but more commonly trees begin flowering and fruiting in the third year after establishment. Flowers are single, medium red-purple, large, and showy. Flowering usually begins in early to mid March in Jackson Springs, N.C.; the chilling requirement is estimated to be 800 hours below 4° C., based on comparison of flowering time to known varieties such as ‘Contender’ and ‘Biscoe’. Flowering generally lasts for 7-10 days, depending on temperature at time of bloom.

Fertility of flowers is excellent, and fruit set is generally very high in most years. Flowers have shown excellent resistance to cold temperatures during winter dormancy and during flower development in the spring. Fruit are very large, often 3 inches in diameter, white fleshed, and highly flavorful and aromatic. Fruit demonstrate the unique saucer shape, often referred to as the “peento” character. Fruit ripen in late June to early July in Jackson Springs, N.C., averaging July 2 over 7 years of observation.

The new variety has been named the GALACTICA cultivar.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

‘Galactica’ is a new and distinct variety of edible peach tree that has the following unique combination of desirable features outstanding in a new variety.

1. Flower buds that demonstrate a high level of resistance to cold temperature injury.

2. Firm, white, low acid flesh fruit with excellent flavor and aroma.

3. Heavy and regular bearing of large size fruit, up to 3 inches in axial diameter.

4. Fruit with early maturity, typically early July in North Carolina.

5. Unique saucer-shaped fruit.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The photographs in the drawings were made using conventional film or digital photography techniques, and show the colors as true as reasonably possible by conventional photography. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description, which accurately describe the colors of the new Prunus persica variety. All photographs were taken from trees growing at the Sandhills Research Station, Jackson Springs, N.C.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

The following is a detailed description of the botanical and pomological characteristics of the subject peach. Color data are based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, The Royal Horticultural Society, London, 1995 edition. Where dimensions, sizes, colors and other characteristics are given, it is to be understood that such characteristics are approximations of averages set forth as accurately as practicable.

The descriptions reported herein are from four-year-old specimens grown at Jackson Springs, N.C.

Classification: Tree.

Type: Deciduous.

Commercial classification: ‘Galactica’ serves as a fruit tree that produces high quality peaches for fresh consumption.

Use: Fruit production.

Systemverilog adds a new type of block called program block. It is declared using program and endprogram keywords. The program block serves these basic purposes: -> Separates the testbench from the DUT. -> The program block helps ensure that test bench transitions do not have race conditions with the design -> It provides an entry point to the execution of testbenches. -> It creates a scope that encapsulates program-wide data. -> It provides a syntactic context that specifies scheduling in the Reactive region which avoids races. -> It doesnot allow always block. Only initial and methods are allowed, which are more controllable. -> Each program can be explicitly exited by calling the $exit system task. Unlike $finish, which exits simulation immediately, even if there are pending events. -> Just like a module, program block has ports. One or more program blocks can be instantiated in a top-level netlist, and connected to the DUT. The program construct serves as a clear separator between design and testbench, and, more importantly, it specifies specialized execution semantics in the Reactive region for all elements declared within the program. Together with clocking blocks, the program construct provides for race-free interaction between the design and the testbench, and enables cycle and transaction level abstractions. For example: program test (input clk,input(16:1) addr,inout(7:0)data); initial... endprogram program test (interface device_ifc ); initial... endprogram program schedules events in the Reactive region, the clocking block construct is very useful to automatically sample the steady-state values of previous time steps or clock cycles. Programs that read design values exclusively through clocking blocks with #0 input skews are insensitive to read-write races. It is important to note that simply sampling input signals (or setting non-zero skews on clocking block inputs) does not eliminate the potential for races. Proper input sampling only addresses a single clocking block. With multiple clocks, the arbitrary order in which overlapping or simultaneous clocks are processed is still a potential source for races.
