Treehouse by Andreas Wenning
The architect specializes in the design of houses in trees and in particular this one, wrapped around a large oak.
Perched 11m above the ground, it offers a calm and relaxing space, allowing its owner to cut himself off from the world. This cabin is placed behind a residence and is accessible via the garage. It is accessed by the spiral steel staircase that surrounds the majestic tree. Two steel posts support the structure and keep it firmly attached to the tree. A door integrated into the platform allows us to enter. A beautiful terrace welcomes visitors once one reaches the top and offers a place to rest while enjoying the view. Inside there is a double bed, all well lit thanks to many openings, avoiding the feeling of claustrophobia.

Australia’s National Arboretum Playground in Canberra, Australia
The National Arboretum Playground challenges the conventional idea of play environments, featuring giant acorn cubby houses floating in the sky, and enormous Banksia cones nestled on the forest floor. Inspired by the Arboretum’s 100 forests of rare and endangered trees from around the world (designed by TCL with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects), the playground has been designed to creatively engage children with the beauty of trees and foster life-long connections to the remarkable surrounding environment.

Eco-Friendly Jungle Treehouse in Manzanillo, Costa Rica
This could be the first structure ever built from the top-down. The two-floor room-and-observation-deck is suspended from a tree using nylon ropes, nylon stripes. Not one screw or nail was used in its construction. Water for the bathroom comes from rainfall and electricity comes from solar panels.
Located on the coast of Costa Rica, deep in the jungle, only 40 minutes hike from the road where you can park the car. Not too far away are the white sands of the local beaches as well. Your bedroom is on the top floor high in the forest canopy and below that is your observation deck which will bring you closer to nature than ever before. The zenith of the tree is accessible through a hatch in your bedroom ceiling. From there you can clamber high above the treetops.
The project is to draw attention to the fact that living trees are worth more than just their weight in paper and construction materials - they provide an ecosystem many species depend on. The guestroom doubles as an observation station for naturalists part of the time. The treehouse is suspended 25 meters from the ground and to get there you have to climb or be pulled up by the elevator winch system.

Azulik Resort & Kin Toh Treetop Restaurant in Tulum, Mexico
Zak Ik is a luxury boutique inside Azulik Resort, underneath Kin Toh Treetop Restaurant in Tulum, Mexico. We were guided through a tunnel made of twigs (pictured above) that opened up into the store itself.
From there, we were invited to “play” in the store, which had a swing, a swinging rope, and a few other fun things. There were pools of water around which we crossed via stepping stones to get from one side of the store to the other, the store itself was constructed of tree limbs and sticks, there were plants scattered throughout, and the air circulated as though blown by a fan throughout the store. The lighting was reminiscent of fire, and looked like something out of a dream, as it was brought in via bamboo pipes and natural sky lights.
Zak Ik boutique exclusively features local artists and traditional construction methods, making it both eco-friendly, and an important piece of local culture.

The Ngala Treehouse in South Africa
Ngala Treehouse is suspended twelve metres above ground on a custom designed platform.
To describe this elegant space as a treehouse seems a misnomer. It’s far removed from the thing ten-year-old you conjured in the garden jacaranda out of some planks and a candlewick bedspread. And yet the name is perfect. A treehouse encapsulates a fragile mystique. It’s a route into the numinous.
This chic version is secluded in 36 000 acres of the wild sanctuary that is the andBeyond Ngala Private Game Reserve. Guests who have the privilege to spend the night here float in off-grid luxury and the special intimacy with the natural world that happens when you sleep under a billion stars.
“Everything is designed around the guest experience. We put a lot of thought into considering ways to make it come alive. For example, there are 360° views from every part of the treehouse. We placed the bed to face the sunrise, and we incorporated some fun elements. I love the dumbwaiter on a pulley that can send snacks or a breakfast tray from the kitchenette to the upper levels.“
Starting with a kitchenette pre-stocked with posh nibbles and drinks, the treehouse rises through two more levels holding the sleeping and bathing areas. It’s completely off-grid. Despite this, all the niceties are in place. Specifically, flushing toilets and hot running water.
The tower continues to an open-air platform at the very top. Up here a sofa transforms into a proper king-size bed and has a retractable awning if needed. This rooftop is the final flourish in this dreamy hangout. It has everything – safety, comfort, privacy and a unique setting in pristine wilderness. Add the African bush at night and you have the closest thing to Eden I can imagine.
