This painting explores death and the destination of the souls for our ancestors, the Mexica. The body contains within itself numerous animating energies, or souls. The three most important of these are the Tonalli (the destiny, represented as a serpent which resides in the head), the Teyollia (the personality, represented as a hummingbird which resides in the heart), and the Ihiyotl (represented as a breath which resides in the liver). These are independent entities, who possess agency and will. Together, they give life, warmth, and vitality to the body, and compose our spiritual self. This painting represents the moment of death, as the forces which give us life abandon us, and we are stripped of ego and individuality, and become as one with the totality of being.
You can read more about the ancient conceptions of death in my book "The Birth of Death", available in Nahuatl, Spanish and English in my Etsy store!

Mictecacihuatl and Mictlantecuhtli are the Lady and Lord of the Land of the Dead. In Mictlan, Their territory, the teyollia, the heart "soul" of the dead, travels. It is during this journey, which lasts four years, through a path of thorns, obsidian and cold wind, that the teyollia is purified, freed from memory, experience and personality. Cleansed again, the blank teyollia returns to the Earth to give life and movement to a new being.
In this scene appear Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, who welcome Oxomoco and Cipactonal, the first humans, who were the first to die. In Mictlan, Lady Oxomoco and Lord Cipactonal received capes of golden feathers, similar to the one given to Nanahuatzin after His sacrifice, and thanks to which He became the Sun and rose for the first time.

The axolotl is an amphibian which can be found in central Mexico. Its name relates it to Xolotl, Lord of Dual Things, twing and spirit animal of Quetzalcoatl. According to the Sacred Narrative, Xolotl refused to die after the first sunrise, when the Sun asked for the blood of the Teteo in sacrifice. He was chased by Death, and He transformed into various creatures to hide, but He was found when He was changing from a tadpole to a salamander. Then, Quetzalcoatl, His twin, sacrificed Him and offered His blood to the Sun. The axolotl was then created, an animal forever suspended in transformation from a tadpole to an adult salamander.
