"Hardly viable. Yeah. Totally." Dave tried his best not to sound sarcastic. "Completely not viable. I didn't knew it was, honestly, until the game began. No idea how the game works, either, don't ask me."
He snorted.
"If I did, I wouldn't be rotting in this hellhole."
“And that you are a time traveler yourself?”
"Pretty much. Sburb had the idea of casting me as a Time player. Though it's obviously a terrible one. Why else'd you think I'm here."
His words started calm, but rapidly deteriorated into a bitterness unnatural for his age.
There was a pause before he began speaking again.
"You probably have no idea what I'm muttering about. Might be better if you didn't - I don't get much of it myself."
watch it. [ dave | naoto ]
His explanation seemed too well thought-out to be cast aside as a joke. As for doubts, Naoto felt she had the right to that. Conclusion drawn from his explanation, it seemed Dave meant to elucidate possible means of time travel.
“The prospect of time travel, which you seem to be implying, was hardly seen as viable in all parts of the world to my knowledge. Do you mean to say this has changed somehow?”
It may have been possible. Naoto was hardly aware of the flow of time in this dimension. What felt like a week could have meant five years back on Earth. Its application through time was never imagined, but since obtaining her Persona, Naoto had spent a significant amount of her days  jumping inside televisions back on Earth, not only to rescue victims who were thrown inside for several reasons but to train said Personas as well. Since that day, her once-hardened conviction that anything and everything could be explained by logic was shamefully discredited. And if she were to conclude that theory by his use of ‘Time player’, Dave Strider was referring to time travel as a ‘game’, and—

Oh god.
He had completely forgotten about how Japanese added suffixes to others' names. Talking to Naoto was already hard enough. Was Rise going to perpetually call him that?
He'd probably die of sheer embarrassment.
It was a relief when Rise quickly moved onto the layout of the apartment. There was a room sandwiched between Rise's room and the kitchen - it was of middling size, with a window oriented towards what he assumed to be the north. Which suited him fine.
"Don't think so." He acknowledged her help with a brief nod, before entering the room he had chosen. Setting his sling bag down on the table, he swiftly retrieved his Macbook from inside.
Dave flipped the cover open, and was about to boot the laptop up, but he decided against it.
"Actually, there is something I'd want to know."
He closed it, then turned to face Rise.
"Tell me more about this... place."
Well, this was a nice change of pace. This guy had some sort of rather aloof aura around him somehow, but he was distinctively different from all her former roommates. For one, he appeared to be fairly young; her own age at the very best, or maybe even a bit younger than herself. And more importantly: he did not seem to be yet another womanizer, at least from what she could tell so far. This at least should make their living together a lot less stressful.
“Okay, Dave-kun then”, Rise began, already much more relaxed than she had been just moments ago. Maybe this wouldn’t be too bad. “Well, this apartment has more than one spare room, so you can choose whichever one you like”, she explained as she walked a few steps along the corridor and pointed at the open doors to the side.
Tumblr media
“My room is the one at the very end. We also have a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom of course”, she continued the little introduction. “Uh, is there anything else you want to know?”

Okaaay. So he had to start from the beginning. Seemed like Naoto had no knowledge about the game. Neither did he know about timelines... Urgh. This complicated things.
"'Course there's more than one universe. Billions of 'em. Some are the... the seeds, if you'd use that term. Each with different sorta 'base settings'. Laws of physics, maybe. How they work, I guess. Then as time starts to flow in each of those bases, the timelines start to split. The universe 'tree structure' starts to grow. You'd end up with an exponential amount of 'em."
There was a pause in the conversation.
"But most people usually just see the one they're living in. Unless, they'd be able to travel between them. There's more ways to do that than quills on a porcupine, but only a handful ever get the ability to that."
Like Sburb, for instance. Time and Space players could do that if they wished to.
“I don’t understand what you mean by ‘Time player’, either.”
"Game terminology." He said with a shrug.
watch it. [ dave | naoto ]
Blew his universe up? That was absurd, she thought, in more ways than one. The first included his manner of phrasing that statement due to its implications. Firstly, the detective understood there to be only one ‘universe’, and assuming there had been more than one, causing an explosion to eradicate the lives of many was a task that would require a carefully-planned discharge of nuclear weapons which she thought inconceivable unless tactfully maneuvered by terrorist attack. Knowledge dictated that these weapons were strictly controlled by their respective governments, as well - for the task to be accomplished by one mere ‘bastard’… Naoto viewed this an impossible feat.
Tumblr media
“What do you mean by, ‘your universe’?” she asks, brows furrowed with more than idle curiosity. “You seem to be implying that there is more than one in existence. We all live in the same one, yes?”
There was a peculiar change in tone that she’d noticed right by the end of his statement, too. But that was left easily ignored in favour of her curiosity. Naoto shook her head lightly.
“I don’t understand what you mean by ‘Time player’, either.”

The silence between them grew, like a cloud that expanded, filling with shards of glass that scored metaphorical scratches upon both of them. Dave looked down, willing his tremors to stop. He had failed to protect her. Something that he had vowed to do, on the day they began playing the game.
It had torn that promise away from him.
”..Why? What happened Dave? I thought you were on the meteor with Rose. —I saw you there.”
There were no recollections of meteors in his memory, save for the ones that obliterated Earth - and the last he saw of Rose was her exploration of her planet, before he left his post as server to explore the interior of the Land of Heat and Clockwork.
And then the Medium caved in upon itself, folding upon itself, a cascading collapse which manifested as a subtle ripple in time - barely a few moment's warning before the universe was torn apart.
The realization hit him, and he felt his insides crumble.
No, this was not Jade from his timeline. But nevertheless, in her instance of the Game, he had failed to protect her.
His silence seemed to unnerve her further.
“I’m sorry Dave.. I—.”
He closed his eyes, forcing his words to stay steady.
"Jade... no. I'm sorry. I'm sorry..."
... for not being there. I'm sorry for not being the one you wanted to see.
Dave fell silent, unable to finish his statement.

Dave's first instinct was to snort, but he managed to suppress it. Strider-san? Seriously?
Jeez, them Japanese have strange speech patterns.
He tilted his head subtly to one side, betraying no expression save for a subtle furrow of his eyebrows. "Some bastard blew my universe up. Everyone got erased. They didn't even make it to the afterlife. Probably'll never get here, too. No idea why I'm still here." A shrug. "Probably 'cos I'm a Time player, given some sort of immunity."
His tone started firm, but began to crack near the end of his words. Dave tried to conceal it with a subtle cough.
"Whatever you'd got hit with to land you down here, 's no way it's gonna be worse than mine."
watch it. [ dave | naoto ]
“…I see.”
Well, in truth, she hadn’t had much to say to that. She’d already fallen to her own grief. Privately, despairing thoughts kept to herself until she’d managed not to think on the subject to dwell on for much longer. Remained here for a long time but apparently not long enough to remember the details of her own death.
Tumblr media
“Well then, yes. I suppose I am,” she says plainly. “As are you, as I’m sure you’re aware of. It’s unfortunate, but our presence here is proof enough of that.”
“If you would allow me to ask… And I don’t mean to inquire on the details, but do you recall the particular incident as to how you’ve died, Strider-san?”

[[Since all he'd do is abuse timestops and drag corpses out, then let the timeline resume and wait for them to finish.]]

Dave froze in his tracks. That voice. The voice that had just called out to him. The voice that spoke his name, a name that only two other people down in Sh'tori knew.
It- it can't - be. That meant she- she was dead too.
And he had been hoping that she somehow survived.
He trembled slightly, unwilling to turn around. He had always been praying that he would see one of his friends again - but when the opportunity presented itself, he was beginning to doubt the necessity of his wish.
"... Jade?"
Dave answered a split second before he turned, registering her appearance in splinters. She still looked the same, at least from the fragments of memory that he could still recall - the same green eyes and cheerful demeanour, although her expression was anything but at this very moment.
"Jade."
His voice wavered, his tone a mixture of bewilderment, grief and paradoxically a little hope. Taking a step forward, he closed the distance between them, standing an arm's length away from her.
Jade looked different from when he had last saw her. There was a certain air of maturity, of wisdom around her, and she had also gained ears - what happened during the time they had been separated?
Then, its implications grew in his mind, a realization that he had not anticipated for all along -
- that perhaps she was not the one he had left.
He desperately hoped that this would be proven false.
--dreaming
Up until now, she had counted herself, well — lucky to have not witnessed any of her friends from the game down in Sh’tori. To know if they were in this land would be the same as knowing they were dead; fallen. And that was the last thing she ever could have wanted for them.
So as she witnesses that familiar shade of platinum blonde hair, her face crumples and complexion falters. Her heart metaphorically drops a few feet and a certain sorrow confounds her being. Dave, out of all people had wound up down here — and really, she just wanted to cry.
But of course, the last time she had seen him—
Tumblr media
Had something gone wrong?
She attempts to dispel that thought for sanity’s sake and paces a few steps forward, a closed hand upon ebony material; placed just above her chest. Brows narrow and there’s a short pause of hesitation before speaking outwardly in attempts to gain his attention.
Tumblr media
“—Dave?” She calls, meek in tone.
Perhaps this was some absurd reality where she was stuck dreaming in the furthest ring and this wasn’t real.

A girl. Oh shit.
Dave didn't know how to interact with girls, to be honest. He spent most of his time pre-game cooped up at home, and the only girls he'd known in person were Rose and Jade. And only for a few weeks.
He kept his face calm, removing his headphones and hanging them around his neck. "Dave Strider." His words were not curt nor sarcastic, simply brief and to the point.
Rise's name was distinctively Japanese. Great, another one of those people. He sincerely hoped they weren't too neurotic - from what Bro had read over the papers, Japanese tended to get super worked up over their, well, work.
He suppressed a snort at that thought.
"So, where'd I put my stuff?" He motioned to his bag.
There wasn't much stuff in there, actually. A decent amount of coins, his Macbook, charger (two, one for the laptop, the other for his iPhone), and  a notebook.
Once again a new roommate. Rise’s brows were furrowed slightly. Was it something she did that drove people away? Not like it mattered too much, since she quite enjoyed having the whole apartment to herself. It wouldn’t last very long though - her new co-inhabitant had already been announced to move in today, and as much as Rise tried to not let it get to her, she was a bit nervous. What if they didn’t get along?
A knock ripped her out of her thoughts. Whatever she had expected, her mental image wasn’t anything like this guy who had just come in.
Tumblr media
“Uhm… hi! You’re my new roommate, right?”, she asked, maybe a bit too hyper. “I’m Rise Kujikawa, nice to meet you!”, the teen introduced herself and took a few steps closer, but soon stopped in her tracks. What else was there even to tell him?

Dave raised an eyebrow in response, though Naoto would only be able to catch a shadow of the motion. His aviators obscured most indicators of expression.
"Dead." He said simply, pronouncing the word as if it was a disease.
Naoto was beginning to remind him more than just a little bit of Rose. Surprising, how he was unconsciously comparing everyone to his friends. He didn't know he missed them that much.
Dave didn't know whether that was a good thing or bad thing.
watch it. [ dave | naoto ]
Eyebrows raised in question to his inquiry. If she were to interpret his words, the “dude” measure would indicate that she’d been mistaken for a male yet again. Which wasn’t a bother, nor was it truly surprising in the least. It had been the intent of her disguise for most of her days, after all. Even much to her own initial dismay, the truth of her gender was actually quite the opposite to his conventional assumption.
Being labeled as “transported” wasn’t quite of much help to decipher Dave’s inquiry, either.
Tumblr media
“I don’t know what you mean,” she states simply.
“Transported? Would you please clarify?”

Dave traversed the corridors of the apartment buildings, absent-mindedly nodding to the music pouring through his earphones.
So, he had finally been assigned a permanent room here - and worse, he was to have a roommate. He had very much enjoyed the solitude of the first few days, even if it meant staying on the road. And to have to deal with someone else for a long time, if not permanently - honestly, the idea just seemed annoying.
Werewombat Ward #1. The placard tacked to the wall was embossed with neat block letters.
He shifted his shoulder, preemptively rescuing his sling bag from a fall to the floor. Knocking briefly to announce his presence, he turned the knob and nudged the door open.

The girl seemed disappointed at the fact. Dave found it strangely funny, though he kept his amusement confined to his mind. She was beginning to remind him a lot of Jade, for some reason - which accounted for the fact that he chose to continue the conversation.
He wrapped up the uneaten half of the kebab.
"What's your name?"

“It’s… school’s closed?” Well, there went Mary’s plan for the day. Thing certainly weren’t going her way recently. A few good things, but right now, those didn’t matter. It was Mary’s chance to try to make friends that day, presumably with less violence than she had prepared for.
Tumblr media
“Oh… I… I see. Sorry to bother you about it, Mister.” Naturally, Mary was sad, but she didn’t want to further annoy this older boy. Especially since last time she did, she died.

Naoto, huh. That sounded distinctively Japanese. Probably from that area, then.
Dave had been marginally curious about it. The handful of recollections he had about Bro mentioning it mostly involved how fast the Japanese could churn out programming. He hadn't paid much attention to the world outside, and the game pretty much wiped out any chances of him ever knowing.
"Dave Strider," he answered in kind, scrutinizing the other with vision darkened by shades. "You're one of the transported dudes, aren't you?"
Seemed pretty much like it.
watch it. [ dave | naoto ]
At this, her expression darkened slightly. Blue irises turned up, accompanied by a subtle flash of indignation — but quickly receded. It did not take much to remind herself of the current situation. She would steel herself to maintain a neutral emphasis even in the face of condescension. Could it be taken as such? Perhaps only slightly; unless she was overreacting.
No, of course not.
… In any case, a display of fury would be irrational, not to mention contradictory and inappropriate in consideration of her initial gratitude. This man - and upon having a good look, perhaps not quite so just yet - this boy had saved her life.
A cool tone of voice was released, in place of her animosity.
Tumblr media
“Naoto Shirogane,” she spoke lightly. “You can rest assured that I will be more mindful of my surroundings here from today forth.”
Now, it was her turn to ask.
“And you are?”
