Chess

Character A is a thief who works in the name of justice, while Character B believes what A is doing is unjust. B doesn't know A is a thief at first, only the group he is in, so he befriends A because of his unique viewpoint. They become rivals, and B eventually joins A's group. However, B betrays them, and later on, they fight for real. B may or may not be dead after this fight (he is never seen again), and A is sad that things had to end this way.

Death Soldiers

Battle buddies, the strategist vs the one who rushes in, two sides of an org., a deteriorating relationship that leads to both of them nearly dying- one becoming a terrorist and the other a vigilante out to take down that very terrorist org. Friends turned enemies, yet they still can’t bring themselves to kill the other.

philosophically ill-advised petplay

A centuries-old steadfast companionship between two pretentious assholes with diametrically opposed ideologies. Character A strives for the advancement of society and knowledge even at great cost; in his own pursuits, he instigated a technological revolution in his country that led to immense environmental loss, and he shattered his soul and was reduced to a shell of his former self. In contrast, Character B strives to preserve past traditions and accept things as they come; he both loathes A for the damage his research and inventions have caused, and obsessively, devotedly loves him in a way that transcends romance or common sense. A does not reciprocate B's feelings, but holds B as his closest friend and constant anchor in his life, while B relishes the turmoil and inner conflict A brings to his. They are caustic and petty and yet deeply affectionate; they know each other better than anyone, and yet still fundamentally fail to truly understand each other because of the extent of their differences.

Rich Brat and his personal Death

A lonely little rich brat meets a little monk at the funeral of one of his relatives. Those in the Rich Brat's family suffers from a hereditary disease, and the Little Monk's family has always held their funerals. The two of them became friends.

The rich brat was always sick and hospital bound, and the little monk would often visit him. The Rich Brat does not think he would live a very long life, so the two of them planned the Rich Brat's funeral together, coming up with elaborate plans like building a pyramid, the way kids do, and the Little Monk promised to hold the Rich Brat's funeral when he dies. The Rich Brat thinks of the Little Monk as his own personal Death.

The two of them would grow up and conceive a revolution together and ruin many lives, but they'll always be each other's first friend.
