🤦🏽‍♂️ via TechCrunch
A Dutch security researcher says he accessed President Trump’s @realDonaldTrump Twitter account last week by guessing his password: “maga2020!”.
Victor Gevers, a security researcher at the GDI Foundation and chair of the Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure, which finds and reports security vulnerabilities, told TechCrunch he guessed the president’s account password and was successful on the fifth attempt.
The account was not protected by two-factor authentication, granting Gevers access to the president’s account.
After logging in, he emailed US-CERT, a division of Homeland Security’s cyber unit Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), to disclose the security lapse, which TechCrunch has seen. Gevers said the president’s Twitter password was changed shortly after.
A screenshot from inside Trump’s Twitter account. (Image: Victor Gevers)
It’s the second time Gevers has gained access to Trump’s Twitter account.
The first time was in 2016, when Gevers and two others extracted and cracked Trump’s password from the 2012 LinkedIn breach. The researchers took his password — “yourefired” — his catchphrase from the television show The Apprentice — and found it let them into his Twitter account. Gevers reported the breach to local authorities in the Netherlands, with suggestions on how Trump could improve his password security. One of the passwords he suggested at the time was “maga2020!” he said. Gevers said he “did not expect” the password to work years later.
Dutch news outlet RTL News first reported the story.
In a statement, Twitter spokesperson Ian Plunkett said: “We’ve seen no evidence to corroborate this claim, including from the article published in the Netherlands today. We proactively implemented account security measures for a designated group of high-profile, election-related Twitter accounts in the United States, including federal branches of government.”
Trump’s account is said to be locked down with extra protections after he became president, though Twitter has not said publicly what those protections entail. His account was untouched by hackers who broke into Twitter’s network in July in order to abuse an “admin tool” to hijack high-profile accounts and spread a cryptocurrency scam.
A spokesperson for the White House and the Trump campaign did not immediately comment, but White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere reportedly said the story is “absolutely not true,” but declined to comment on the president’s social media security. A spokesperson for CISA did not immediately confirm the report.
Gevers has previously reported security incidents involving a facial recognition database used to track Uyghur Muslims and a vulnerability in Oman’s stock exchange.
Updated with Twitter comment.

What's in the back of your average graphic design studio? Books of those Pantone swatches--bor-ring. But go into the back room of any ID consultancy and you'll see one of these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For you ID students that haven't seen one yet, those aren't sets of game cartridges, but plastic sample sets that you'll use to evaluate whether to go with ABS, HDPE, PVC or a plethora of other plastics for any given project. Each piece gives you an idea of each materials' weight, feel, stiffness, surface appearance, draft angle requirements, sensitivity to sink marks, suitability for living hinges, et cetera.
Tumblr media
The molds for these sample pieces are complicated by necessity, as they have to demonstrate every manufacturing trick in the repertoire of injection molded plastics:
Depending on where you shop, these can get expensive. The 20-piece set you see above, sold by MaterialSampleShop.com, rings in at €370.00 (USD $436). However, the 20-piece set below, sold by PlasticSamplesKits.com, offers many of the same features but sells for just $95.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Junior designers: As a form of subversion, you can hide the pucks of just the plastics you don't like. It'll drive the senior designers crazy. "Where the f*@# is the Polybutylene Terephthalate?"

Neat cargo boxes. via Expedition Portal
Pelican got its start in 1976, designing and manufacturing lighting and other waterproof items for the SCUBA diving industry. But when customers began repurposing their waterproof Pelican first-aid kits to protect a wide range of delicate items, founder Dave Parker saw the future of his company. Over the years, a range of strategic business acquisitions and leadership hires has led Pelican to become a household name in protective cases. But to describe their offerings as protective cases would be a simplification of the wide range of products they have developed. Pelican manufacturers tactical flashlights, bags and backpacks, drinkware, coolers, protective armor for electronics, rugged specialized cases for a variety of industries, biothermal transportation solutions, and now vehicle cargo solutions too.
Molded and assembled in the USA, Pelican Cargo Cases are much more than protective plastic boxes.
“Pelican Cargo cases are the perfect solution to keep your valuable gear, clothing, tools, and even dry food organized, secured, and protected. Built with the same legendary performance and quality Pelican is known for, Pelican Cargo cases are extremely durable, weather tested, and feature a limited lifetime guarantee (cases only). Ready to mount and protect, Pelican Cargo cases can be attached to your roof rack, truck bed, or stored in your SUV.”
Secure-mount Quick Release Hardware
Pelican’s Cargo cases can be paired with a variety of mounting solutions, allowing users to choose the best possible vehicle placement for their specific needs. There are 4 different options available:
Roof mounting kit
Saddle mounting kit
Cross-bed mounting kit
Side mounting kit
No matter which configuration users select for mounting, Cargo box lids remain accessible, even when the cases are secured in place. Specific mounts are offered for Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Jeep, Ram, and if you have a vehicle that isn’t listed, there are universal options as well. No drilling is required for mounting and TSA-compliant padlocks or cable locks are available to secure one or both sides of Cargo cases.
  Purpose-Built Designs
Pelican’s range of Cargo cases is designed for versatility, but they also fit a variety of specific use-cases.
The BX90R and BX140R were specifically designed for mounting on the roof of your vehicle with a compatible roof rack or tie-down points.
The BX55S and BX85S nest snugly along the sides of your truck bed but can also work on the roof of your vehicle.
BX50, BX80, BX135, and BX255 were designed to protect smaller items; kitchen kits, tools, dry goods, or outdoor gear. These square and rectangular Cargo cases fit in the back of your SUV or truck bed.
Pelican Cargo Case Design and Features
A: Heavy Duty Lay-Flay Handles – Stow flat when cases are stored/mounted, lock at 90-degrees when deployed. Wide, full grip.
B: Tie-down Plates – Designed specifically to work with Pelican’s Cargo case mounting solutions, these tie-down plates can also be used to secure Cargo cases with ratchet straps or rope.
C: E-Coated Steel Latches – Twin-layer electroplate coating protects these durable metal latches from corrosion for a long life of use.
D: Mounting Kit Interface Plate – Accepts Mounting Kit draw latch/connection point and can also be utilized as an additional tie-down point.
E: Roto-molded Design – Hard-wearing, durable plastic construction protects from impact and is UV resistant.
F: Weather Resistant/Dustproof – The rubber gasket inside the lid comes with a Mil-Spec 810G rating, protecting the contents from blowing rain and dust.
Pelican’s new Cargo cases come with a limited lifetime warranty and vehicle mounting solutions carry a 3-year warranty.
Cases range in price from $249.95-$449.95. Fit your vehicle here or check out the full range of Cargo Cases on Pelican’s website.

About time. So much single use trash with kids toys. via Core77
Yesterday LEGO announced they're investing up to $400 million over the next three years on sustainability initiatives, including material changes and the pursuit of carbon-neutral operations. In this day and age that's not surprising--what is surprising is the inspiration source for one of the changes: Letters received from children.
Tumblr media
"As a company who looks to children as our role models, we are inspired by the millions of kids who have called for more urgent action on climate change," LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen said. ""We have received many letters from children about the environment asking us to remove single-use plastic packaging. We have been exploring alternatives for some time and the passion and ideas from children inspired us to begin to make the change."
Tumblr media
If you've purchased a LEGO set any time in the past few decades, you know that the pieces come wrapped in single-use plastic bags. That wasn't lost on the well-informed children who wrote in requesting the change. These children understood the importance of the change, if not the difficulty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Moving away from the existing packaging is not a simple task and will take time as new material must be durable, lightweight and enhance the building experience."
Thus far the frontrunner looks to be paper bags. LEGO has been developing and testing out 15 different paper prototypes with hundreds of children and parents for the past two years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Children liked the paper bags…as they were environmentally friendly and easy to open," the company says. Commercial trials of the paper bags are set to begin next year.

California company NDB says its nano-diamond batteries will absolutely upend the energy equation, acting like tiny nuclear generators. They will blow any energy density comparison out of the water, lasting anywhere from a decade to 28,000 years without ever needing a charge. They will offer higher power density than lithium-ion. They will be nigh-on indestructible and totally safe in an electric car crash. And in some applications, like electric cars, they stand to be considerably cheaper than current lithium-ion packs despite their huge advantages.

Kyle Orland, writing at Ars Technica:
Most if not all of the complaints Epic makes against Apple and Google seem to apply to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo in the console space as well. All three console makers also take a 30-percent cut of all microtransaction sales on their platforms, for example. […]
On mobile platforms, Epic is calling the same kind of 30-percent fee “exorbitant” and says it wants to offer a more direct payment solution so it can “pass along the savings to players.” On consoles, though, Epic happily introduced a permanent 20-percent discount on all microtransaction purchases, despite there being no sign that the console makers have changed their fee structure.
Bingo. This is exactly the point I’ve been trying to make since the Xbox Game Pass controversy last week. Microsoft wants Apple to allow on iOS something they themselves will not allow on Xbox.
If you think Epic is right in principle about iOS and Android, then they ought to be making the same argument about Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. A computer is a computer. “Consoles” are a business model and user experience design choice, and the iPhone and iPad are effectively app consoles, where games are just one type of app. It’s a shame (in more ways than this) that Apple TV isn’t a bigger player, because it’s just another variant of iOS.
But instead of fighting the game consoles, Epic is taking more of a hit: Fortnite players on Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch get the 20 percent reduction in price while Epic still pays the 30 percent cut of each transaction to the platform vendor. It’s a stunt, pure and simple.
Orland:
Or maybe Epic just has a better relationship with console makers than mobile phone makers. […] [Sony recently invested $250 million in Epic]s and prominently featured Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 in a recent major PlayStation 5 promotional demo, too. Even Nintendo, which traditionally uses its own technology for game development, has begun using Unreal Engine for its own titles in recent years. In a way, Epic can’t attack these platform holders without also attacking itself.
I’m sure that has nothing to do with it.

You’ve heard of do-it-yourself projects on a smaller scale, get ready for DIYs on a bigger scale. Hello Wood presents the Kabinka, a simple and modern small-batch cabin. The Budapest-based creative architectural and design studio took cues from local rural architecture design. The Kabinka is made for those who want to build a weekend home, as Designboom detailed:
‘the tiny house movement, which bursted into hungary a few years ago, unites those who favor a more conscious way of living and building,’ comments hello wood. ‘there is a growing number of people enamored with holiday homes and unique houses close to nature, who are looking for an intimate place to disappear to when on vacation and hello wood’s newest, reasonably priced, charming cabin, kabinka, is sure to resonate with them. it can be used as a great weekend home or a private work space, but it is also a perfect option for companies in need of a community space or meeting room.’
kabinka is available in four different sizes — from 12 to 20 square meters. inside, users can fit a tea kitchen, bathroom, couch and stove. with sustainability in mind, the cabin has been built applying a low-energy consumption and environmental focus, resulting in a structure that is greener than one built with non-renewable materials and conventional technologies

Christian Selig, developer of popular Reddit app Apollo, is today hosting a fundraiser that will see all Apollo in-app purchase proceeds from today donated to his local SPCA animal shelter. Selig hosts a similar fundraiser each year, and last year, was able to raise $27,000 to help shelter animals in Nova Scotia, marking the largest donation the SPCA had ever received. Apollo is a free Reddit app that can be used in a read only kind of capacity at no cost, but it offers "tip" options at $3.99, $6.99, or $9.99 to unlock Apollo Pro features like post submissions, multiple account support, auto dark mode, gesture customization, filtering, live comment updating, custom color themes, and more. There's also an extra Apollo Ultra tier for $0.99 per month, $9.99 per year, or $24.99 for a lifetime unlock that provides realtime notifications, app theming, and a custom app icon every month. All Apollo proceeds from in-app upgrades will be donated today. To celebrate the fundraiser and encourage donations, Selig has also released a new pet-themed SPCA Home Screen icon option created by artist David Lanham, which can be set as the icon on the iPhone or iPad's ‌Home Screen‌. The icon is an extra $4.99 purchase that also includes an Apollo Pets photo album and wallpapers.
Today 100% of Apollo's proceeds will be donated to the Nova Scotia SPCA Animal Shelter who are really in need of the help and is strained on resources. Check out an awesome Reddit app today! I'll also donate $1 for every retweet this gets! https://t.co/oMlPqOAPOt
