Imo, atla has a bittersweet ending
Aang is sitting alone and wearing the air nomads clothes, his culture clothes, a necklace similar to GYATSO's necklace. I can't even imagine the emptiness and sadness he was feeling here
There are no airbenders in the crowd
All nation gathered..... except the air nomads.
No one else in the crowd wearing orange or yellow.
Aang won the war, but his people are still gone.
Yes, he has the Gaang, he has Katara, he has Momo and Appa. But he's still the last airbender.
This is so heartbreaking.

There are endless examples of stories where the protagonist is not the most popular character, or where a side character steals the show, or where the protagonist simply isn't as deep and interesting as some others in the story. And some of those are still good stories, the main character doesn't *need* to be the "best" one. But Aang isn't an example of that. He has as much depth and as long an arc as anyone else, and yes, that includes Zuko. AtLA is crammed full of great, nuanced characters, from the protagonist on down to small parts in single episodes.

unpopular opinion: i do not blame america singer for being indecisive.
do i think a lot could’ve been avoided if she just told maxon from the start: “hey that guard we just talked to was my ex could you please assign him somewhere else”? yes.
do i blame her for going back to aspen after marlee’s caning? absolutely not.
she had every right to be wary of maxon and being part of the monarchy in general. and it’s not cheating if they were never in a monogamous relationship in the first place?? i do feel bad for maxon, he’s always been in love with her, but he knew there was someone waiting for america. same way he had three girls waiting for him.
plus americas fear was very valid. not only did the other girls hold up a good fight, but if she did marry maxon, she’d still have to deal with the king and be someone she didn’t want to be. she lucked out when he died, cause if they got married while he was still alive she would’ve been miserable.
she knew aspen would give her the life she always wanted (with him, and close to her family), and more now that he was a two. i’d keep my cards close to my chest if i was her, too.

So while yes it was irritating for America to be so back and forth in The Elite, I think we forget that she literally told Maxon that she wanted to be his. That she wanted this life. In the very beginning of the book.
It was Maxon who had to decide if she was serious. It was Maxon who chose to back off and see the other girls more frequently even after America’s confession.
So while America was infuriatingly back and forth between her feelings for Aspen and Maxon (because Aspen showing up at the palace was jarring for her...), it was Maxon who had to decide if she was who he wanted too.
It wasn’t just America. It was Maxon as well. It went both ways.
