i’m watching a youtube video on problematic shojo and this youtuber is expressing a very valid confusion as to the psychology behind why young girls liked chobits which was actually a seinen the whole time. like she’s been dissecting the other common problematic shojo tropes beautifully and why we as young girls liked it (such as teen age gaps or That One Episode Of Ouran) but she just cannot see the psychology behind why we liked chobits.
So I just marathoned elfen lied and I actually think I know why….elfen lied and chobits are very similar seinens in many ways and adolescent girls loved both. they’re two sides of the same coin, elfen lied being gorey and um attempting to be serious at least and chobits being the opposite. you have these two cringe perpetually nude sexy-born-yesterday characters made to appeal to coomy dudes with pornbrain, but viewed through the perspective of an adolescent girl, nyu/lucy is this outcast girl who was relentlessly bullied who can walk around naked without any shame or fear because she can just kill someone whenever she wants to. on the other side of the coin chii is an entirely innocent girl who is constantly sexualized by the show she’s in as well, but is ultimately safe in that nobody can ever actually have sex with her— so anyone who loves her has to love her for who she is in an entirely non-sexual, safe and pure way. if you look at it through a young anime-loving girl’s perspective, both chii and nyu hold all of the power over their own bodies despite the sexualization that they deal with from others (all too relatable for a teen girl), just in entirely different ways. like it’s all about safety and power. probably also helps that chii and nyu both have unique abilities that make them stronger than most to different extents
btw both anime are still like Not Good or morally correct AT ALL just explaining why I think we were drawn to them during that time of our lives

I FEEL LIKE SOMETHING BAD IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME. I FEEL LIKE SOMETHING BAD HAS HAPPENED. IT HASN’T REACHED ME YET, BUT IT’S ON ITS WAY. AND IT’S GETTING CLOSER. AND I DON’T FEEL READY. I FEEL LIKE I CAN’T DO ANYTHING.
