Misery:
RollerRink Rejection
The Novel
By: Aza St-hill
Chapter One: Get Over Him
[September 28th]
[Lunch]
(11:45PM)
Heloise was eating lunch with Beezy and Saffi at their table in the outdoor cafeteria. Beezy and Saffi had been playing with their food for the first ten minutes. Amusing themselves.
It was a rare occasion, she had had no friends, work was off with Lucuis for the day and she had nowhere to go to that wasn’t the Welcoming Commitee Office with Jean.
She had been staring across the cafeteria at Jimmy since she'd sat down. Watching as Jimmy had been communing with his other classmates, entranced.
“Hey Heloise”. She looks over to Beezy, snapping out of it.
“Look, I’m a walrus”. Beezy had put a spaghetti noodle on his face, clapping his hands, trying to amuse Saffi.
Saffi laughs, pointing at him.
“Your Seniors, right? Aren’t you too old to be acting like this?”. Heloise sarcastically rolls her eyes, looking away from them.
Annoyed that they had interrupted her daydreaming.
Beezy puts down the act, eating his spaghetti noodle, dusting of his hands.
“Aren't you tired of staring at Jimmy all the time?”. Beezy put bluntly.
Not actually meaning to hurt her feelings.
Heloise grumbles, glaring at him. Trying her best to ignore him, looking away.
“You should just confess to him already and get it over with”. Beezy grabs another meatball, tossing it into this mouth.
“What?!”. Heloise quickly stared at him, dumfounded.
Shocked at his sudden suggestion.
“I can’t do that”. Heloise says, embarrassed.
“Sure you can”. He said simply.
“He wouldn't even like me back”. Heloise looks back at Jimmy, disappointed.
“Good”.
“You should get over him already, he’s too old for you”. Beezy put simply.
Exhausted from watching her gaze at him ever since they had met eight months ago.
“It’ll help you get it off your chest”.
“Yeah”. Saffi grabs another meatball while Beezy faces her, opening his mouth. Taking her aim.
“You’ll never get over him just by looking at him”. Tossing it at his mouth.
Feigning her enthusiasm. Only giving her input when the conversation sparks her interest. Looking for involvement or information on the matter.
“You’ll feel better once you do, then maybe you’ll find someone who actually likes you”. The meatball had missed his mouth, landing on his face.
“I’m going to the bathroom real quick”. Saffi excuses herself, dusting herself off. Leaving the two alone.
Beezy cleans the sauce on his face, licking his hand and wiping his cheek. Peaking at Heloise, concerned.
“You don’t have to you know, it was just a suggestion”. Staring back at his hand.
“Whatever you do, just don’t ask him out”. Licking his fingers.
“I won’t”.
Chapter Two: Wanna Roll
[2 hours later]
[The third floor, Juniors Floor Hallways]
[After School]
(3:45PM)
The final bell had just rang. Heloise was on the third Junior floor, waiting for Jimmy.
Jimmy had just left class, getting his things from out of his locker. Getting ready to go home. Organizing and packing up his books into his schoolbag.
Heloise comes up from beside him. Poking his arm.
“Jimmy?”. Heloise has her voice down.
“Oh hey Heloise!”. Startling him, Jimmy trips back, staring at her.
Being the jumpy one in the group, his nerves are usually on high alert.
“What's up?”. Jimmy stands upright, trying to keep his composure.
“Nothing much, just wanted to ask you something”. Heloise crosses her arms, nonchalant.
Acting casual.
“Of course, what is it?”. Jimmy shuts his locker, curious.
Since school had started, he had been helping move in, and organize in the Unwelcoming Committee. Wondering if she needed more help with it.
“Do you want to hang out with me tomorrow night?”. Heloise says.
“Sure, where are we going?”. Jimmy smiles.
Excited to finally do something other than carry and clean out boxes in the Committee.
“There’s a new roller rink in town, we just finished construction for it last week”. Heloise shrugs.
“You got it, consider it a thanks for helping me make our cheer uniforms”. Jimmy grabs his bag, walking away. Quickly winking back at her, pointing back at her over his shoulder.
Heloise had put in the order for their uniforms to their designer at Misery Inc. After that, now he owes her.
“Great, I’ll text you the details then”. Heloise waves at him.
“Can’t wait”. Jimmy heads down the hall.
Leaving just as quickly as she showed up.
Heloise crosses her arms back. Smiling at herself, proud.
Uncrossing her arms, heading down the halls.
“Well well well”. Beezy had been listening on them from behind the wall. Leaning against the wall, crossing his arms. Unimpressed.
Honious’s have good ears, he’d be able to hear her from a classroom away. Or as a whisper from a mile.
“Look who didn’t listen to ole’ Heinous”. He says.
Heloise glares at him, looking away, walking past him.
Trying her best to ignore him, now for the second time that day.
“I thought you said you wouldn’t ask him on a date?”. Beezy follows her, shutting his eyes, gesturing his hand. Confused.
“For your information, I just asked him to hangout”. Heloise says, unbothered.
“This is a bad idea”. Beezy crosses his arm, staring at her, grimacing. Concerned.
Just then Heloise stops. Pulling her knife out on him. Glaring up at him. Unamused. Beezy steps back, back, raising his arms, defensive, surprised. Staring at it.
The last, and dumbest person she had wanted to hear it from.
“I don’t recall asking for your input, Beezy”. Taking a second.
“This has nothing to do with you got it?”. Heloise puts her knife away. Quickly heading back down the hall.
Beezy takes a second, grimacing.
“Ah Beezy..”.
Chapter Three: Rollout
[September 24th]
[The Roller Rink] [Next Day]
(5:00PM)
It was late afternoon. Heloise was sitting on the curb in front of the roller rink, waiting for Jimmy.
She had dressed up for the night, wearing a red dress, a red cardigan, wearing a white purse.
“Hey Heloise”. Jimmy leans over, eyes shut, smiling at her, waving. Arm behind his back.
He had worn the long sleeve version of his crop top.
“Nice dress”. Jimmy points at her.
“Thanks”. Heloise holds the strap on her purse, getting up. Staring at him, disappointed.
She was hoping he had dressed up.
“Come on, let’s get the night started. Jimmy reaches his hand, escorting her to the door, enthusiastically.
He and Heloise were walking inside the building.
The interior was styled after the 80’s. The carpet had geometric shapes, the walls were painted blue, there were booths, a stand for renting shoes, a snack bar. Serving hotdogs, popcorn nachos and pretzels. And the skating rink in the middle.
Jimmy stares at the rink.
Just then, the rink floor turns, all the guests trip over themselves, trying to keep steady, frantic, surprised.
Jimmy takes a second, pointing back at it over his shoulder, using his thumb.
“What’s that?”. Staring at Heloise, curious.
“It’s Miseryville, we built a gimmick rink so that way all of the civilians who visit, lose their balance. And after eating the nachos, lose their appetite. It spins every thirty minutes”. Heloise explains.
Having been one of the main heads on the project before the school year started.
Jimmy puts his arm down taking a second. Thinking.
“Lucuis's idea”. Heloise shrugs.
“Heh”. Jimmy laughs not surprised.
“Of course it was”.
The night goes well, Heloise and Jimmy skate around the rink a few times. Eating some nachos. All accordingly to Lucuis’s plan.
Jimmy steps off the rink, sick. Holding stomach, nauseous. Grabbing on to the border for support.
“You okay?”. Heloise asks from the rink, not having stopped yet.
“Yeah”. Jimmy looks down, trying to keep his composure.
“Just give me five, I have to go get a soda”. Jimmy carries himself off of the rink. Holding his stomach.
Jimmy had headed to the snack bar. After taking a second to allow his stomach to settle while unlacing his roller skates.
Just then. Someone bumps into him.
“Oh sorry”. Jimmy backs up apologetic, staring at them.
“Beezy?”. Beezy stares at him, quicky turning his head. His eyes were wide, arms crossed surprised, frowning. His glasses had slightly fallen off of his face.
He had disguised himself in a black sleeveless hoodie, Wearing something other than his shorts, jeans, a rare sight. He had placed his tail into his pant leg. Wearing a gold watch.
Beezy leans over, carefully shoving him to the side, pushing him into the bathroom.
He let’s go of him. Putting his arms down to his sides.
Jimmy takes a second.
“Are you trying to blow my cover?”. Beezy stares at the door, over his shoulder.
“Sorry”. Jimmy says, defensive, staring at him.
“What are you doing here? What happened to your tail?”. Jimmy stares at his legs, tilting his head. Pointing at them, Curious.
“I tucked it into my pant leg”. Beezy answers, frantically.
“Look, I need you to call off the date”. Beezy raises his hands, defensive, frowning. Concerned.
“P’shaw this isn’t date”. Jimmy smiles, looking away, flopping his wrist at him, unconvinced.
He and Heloise hangout out all the time, how could this be any different?
Just then. “Oh man”. Beezy looks away from him, frowning, holding his arm. Checking the time on his watch. Anxious, disappointed.
He had set a timer for how long he had to find Jimmy before Heloise finds out.
“Listen, end the date as soon as possible”’. Beezy looks away, quickly turning around, grabbing the doorknob. Stern.
Beezy leaves, shutting the door. While Jimmy drops his look.
“Ookay...”. Jimmy looks him and down, confused.
Chapter Four: Ah Beezy
Jimmy leaves the bathroom.
Then.
“There you are”. Heloise was sitting on a seat outside of the rink, holding two sodas, raising her head, staring at him, surprised.
“Where’d you go?”. She gets up, walking over to him, curious.
“I... wasn't feeling well, I got sick”. Jimmy walks over to her, scratching his neck. Anxious.
He’s an awful lar, he can’t tell a lie to save his skin.
Jimmy let's go of his neck, putting his arm down.
“It's a good thing I got you this then”. Heloise, brushes him off.
Not caring what he was saying, just excited to continue their date.
Jimmy stands in front of her.
“here”. Heloise hands him one of the soda’s.
“Thanks Heloise”. Jimmy takes it, appreciative.
Happy he had convinced her. On his toes, trying to act casual after receiving the new information from Beezy.
Taking a second.
Then.
Before he can get a sip in.
“Ready to skate?”. Heloise smiles, impatient.
Jimmy slowly leans over, placing his soda on the seat next to them.
“Um... I don't know, I'm still kinda dizzy-”. He slowly gets back up.
Looking for an excuse.
“Come on it'll be fun”. Heloise quickly grabs his arm, pulling him, heading back to the rink. While Jimmy's eyes widen, staring at her, surprised.
They skate around the rink for a bit.
Then.
The led lights in the rink turn pink.
Heloise grabs his arm, excited.
“Come on let’s skate”. Heloise grabs his arm, pulling him. Jimmy's eyes widen, surprised.
She pulls him them to the middle of the rink.
The music changes a slow 80’s tune.
Heloise faces him. Grabbing his hands.
Spinning them around in circles.
Then.
Her eyelids lower.
Jimmy’s eyes widen.
Getting the gist.
He let’s go of her hands.
Raising his arms, frantically skating off the rink, anxious.
“You okay? Why'd you leave?”. Heloise follows him, dropping her look, confused.
Jimmy was leaning over next to the border, holding onto it for support.
“Um...”. He sweats, anxious.
Scrambling for an excuse.
“I need a break! wanna step outside real quick with me?”. He yells, quickly letting go of the border, getting up, feigning a smile.
It’s time to put an end to this.
“Ok”. Heloise nods, suspicious.
Chapter Five: Down Easy
Jimmy and a Heloise were sitting on the curb outside of the rink, he was keeping them two feet apart. They were hunching over, looking away from each other, holding their hands.
Jimmy was tapping his foot. Trying to think of a way to let her down easy.
He usually couldn't sit still, now the anxiety was making it worse.
Jimmy places his hands on the curb.
They take a second.
Then.
“Um.. Jimmy”. Heloise speaks up, keeping her voice down, shy.
Jimmy’s eyes widen. Quickly staring at his hand, Heloise was holding his hand.
He quickly stares at her.
Heloise was staring at him.
“I have something to tell you, I-”. Heloise keeps her voice down.
Hopeful.
“Actually-”. Jimmy cuts her off. He smiles, shutting his eyes, grabbing her hand, slowly taking it off of him.
“I should go first”. He let’s go of her hand, taking a second.
“Uh okay, what is it?”. Heloise had dropped her look, staring at him eye wide, curious.
“I don't know how to ask this but...”. Jimmy opens his eyes, looking away, taking a second.
“Heloise, do you have a crush on me?”. He stares at her, pointing at her.
Heloise slowly holds her hands, looking away. Staring at the ground.
She takes a second, embarrassed.
“Yeah I do, I have for while”. She takes a second.
Jimmy looks away, scratching his neck.
“Ah man, this isn't good”. He takes a second.
Heloise drops her look, letting go of her hands.
“What’s wrong? Is that bad?”. She stares at him, confused, in disbelief.
Jimmy takes a second.
“Yeah...”. He lets go of his neck, staring at her.
“Heloise, you’ve always been like a sister to me”. He takes a second.
“Oh”. Heloise drops her look, looking away. Disappointed.
He takes a second.
Heloise takes a second.
“You okay?”. Jimmy takes a second, concerned.
Heloise clenches her fist, frowning, grimacing. Trying to keep her composure.
“Yeah” She drops ger look.
“I'm fine Jimmy, thanks for telling me”. She gets up.
“I’ll see you Monday”. She walks away.
Jimmy gets up, concerned. Raising his hand.
“Heloise?”. He takes a second.
“Are we still friends?”. Heloise takes a second.
She doesn’t know what to say.
“Good night Jimmy”. She looks away, leaving.
Jimmy puts his arm down, he takes a second, getting the gist.
Chapter Six: Told You So
Heloise was slowly walking home, keeping her head down, embarrassed. The sun had completely gone down.
Then.
A horn honks, she looks over.
“Hey”. There was a red pickup truck across the street.
Beezy was driving the ‘Lucymobile’, he had stopped his car across the street from her, staring at her, his arm was out the window, resting it on the door, his sunglasses and hood were off.
Heloise crosses her arms, unamused.
Still the last person she wants to see.

Beezy takes a second, concerned.
“Get in, I’ll drive you home”. He takes a second.
Heloise takes a second. Staring at him.

“Well I did what you said, I told him”. Heloise takes a second.
Beezy frowns, pulling his hand back.
“Your right, he doesn't like me back”. She takes a second.
“I shouldn’t have asked him on this date”. She takes a second.
She looks away.
Then.
She drops her look, her eyes well up, upset.
“Oh great, now I’m crying”. She cries, frowning, gesturing her hands.
