I can't help picturing a scenario where they did both die in the plane crash, and decades later their consciousness gets uploaded to San Junipero and the first thing they both do is find each other to admit they loved each other and finally live the life neither of them could admit they wanted in life.
like the implications of them not having confessed feelings yet precrash and just being best friends who hooked up and never talked about it. like the idea of them losing each other for decades and then finally getting their chance to be together forever in the afterlife and finally realizing they loved each other all along. GOD!!!
