Yuri Petrovich Kugach (1917-2013)

Born in Suzdal. In 1936 he graduated from the Moscow Isotechnicum in Memory of 1905. Studied with N. P. Krymova and K. F. Morozova. In 1942 he graduated from the Moscow State Art Institute, where in 1945 - postgraduate studies with S. C. Gerasimova, N. K Maksimova, I. E. Grabarya. Yuri Petrovich Kugach was one of the patriarchs of the Russian painting school. In 1948-1951 he taught at the Moscow State Art Institute named after C. I. Surikov, in 1950 he became an associate professor of the institute.
Fruitfully worked on landscapes glorifying native nature, still lifes, portraits, created genre paintings that brightly and figuratively reveal the features of national life. The artist's works are strong in their depth, truthfulness and spiritual penetration.
For outstanding services in the field of development of domestic fine arts, Yuri Petrovich Kugach in different years was awarded the titles of People's Artist of the USSR, full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, the State Prize of the USSR and the State Prize of the RSFSR named after I.E. Repin. In connection with the ninetieth anniversary, the Academy of Arts awarded the jubilee with a gold medal.
Paintings by Yuri Petrovich Kugach are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, in the Kiev State Museum of Russian Art, in art museums of Gorky, Rostov, Kharkov, Lviv, Taganrog, in private collections in Russia and abroad.
Until the age of 90, Yuri Petrovich sat in front of the canvas and continued the journey begun in early childhood. Perhaps, how many wonderful paintings were born in his long creative age cannot be counted. And in each - a piece of the soul of a man who selflessly loves his homeland, its amazing nature, wonderful people. "Otchizna," Yuri Petrovich specified. "I once called my picture: "For the Fatherland." The fatherhood is a deep, spiritual concept. These are our ancestors..."
In his work, Yu.P. Kugach addressed a wide variety of topics. But perhaps the most beloved and dearest for us were his works, which depict Vyshnevolotsk peasants. All of them are written from nature. For the paintings "Before Dancing", "On Saturday", "Wedding", "Selkor" the artist was awarded the State Prize of the RSFSR named after I.E. Repina. Paintings by Y.P. Kugacha continues to attract attention.
