Kenrokuen Garden is a beautiful Japanese garden with an area of 11.4 hectares located on the heights of the central part of Kanazawa and next to Kanazawa Castle. Visitors will have a glorious view of seasonal natural beauty including the snow-covered landscape with yukitsuri (literally means snow hanging), which is performed for approximately one month from November 1 every year. This is a method of protecting the branches of the pine trees in the garden with ropes attached in a conical array to the trees in order to prevent the branches from breaking.

※Translator’s Notes: Snow Suspenders - Trees are protected from collapse due to heavy snow using Yukitsuri (雪吊り). Said trees are supported by bamboo poles, and ropes are tied to their branches from the top. They’re (apparently) used a lot in Kenroku-en in Kanazawa, which is the setting of Wind Boys. I don’t think there’s a proper term in English for them, but some sources have referred to them as snow suspenders, so I’ve used that here. A Passing Romance - ‘Yukizuri no koi’ (ゆきずりの恋) is what Ijeong says. Though it could also be seen as an misinterpretation of meaning on the non-native Ijeong’s part, I personally think he’s trying to make a clever pun here - his cheeky facial expression says it all. The result is a lame joke that literally translates to ‘The Romance of the Snow Suspenders’.

During heavy snow you can see many trees with broken branches however around Japan you will see trees in a cone shaped cages made of straw rope and bamboo. This technique is called yukitsuri (雪吊り) which is a support to prevent branch breakage when it snows heavily but also designed to look pleasing to the eye. Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa is famous for its snow covered yukitsuri trees but you will find many places that use the yukitsuri technique. #tree #winterprotection #japangarden #gardening #japanrevealed
