Imma tell you about my current D&D disaster. Moonbrook is a half-orc monk, her birth name is Vola Yarov (Moonbrook is her conferred/virtue name) and she entered the monastery to repay a debt of service, as her father suffered a quarrying accident and needs round-the-clock care (which the monks provide).

She studied under Master Morning Sky, an aaracokra, until one day, after a long mountain trek, he invited her to meditate with him in the temple. She fell asleep during, and when she awoke, still on the temple floor, Morning Sky was gone and with him the Artefact guarded in the inner sanctum.

During the campaign, she was searching in the background for Morning Sky, and their quests led them to a sister monastery in the high mountains, burnt and abandoned but for one master, Flowing River, and the realisation that the Artefact is one of five parts (red, black, green, blue, white) which combine to make a Super-Artefact capable of allowing Tiamat into the world. Naturally Moonbrook assumed Morning Sky was after them all because Evil(TM), and the race was on to reach the next temple before him.

Theres quite a long story in the interim, but suffice to say that we came across rumours, visions and evidence that another party, the Knights of the Five Thorned Rose, were also after the staff, and several destroyed villages referred to 'White-feathered justice' in hastily written notes.

We arrived at the Underdark temple full of trepidation, and a lot of doubt on Moonbrook's part, confusion tempering the anger that she tries her best to control, just behind the Knights. Racing through the series of challenges and traps that protect the sanctum, they overtook the Knights at the last minute before the final room only to find Morning Sky there already. Moonbrook was so ready to fight him, she was so angry, but there wasn't time. They fought the Five Thorned Rose, lost, and they took the piece Morning Sky had, the piece from this monastery, to go with the one from Flowing River's place.

Turns out Morning Sky stole the piece and ran because he thought it would be easier to hide it if he kept moving. Also it would keep the monastery safe. Regrettably, this was logical, and Moonbrook could only argue that he should have told at least the other masters.

He conferred rank of master on her during that same conversation, but she turned around and told him he doesn't get to decide that, as he wasn't her master anymore (it was a clutch rp moment).

She sent him off, with the copper dragon who the party befriended, to the desert temple to warn the monks there, whilst the party continue to the jungle temple, to thwart the Five Thorned Rose there.

Hace unos años, mi buen amigo Emilio me recomendó ir mejor atento al silencio, y le hice caso. No sólo aprendes a oír cosas que no se oyen, sino también a percibir lo que no necesariamente se ve. El silencio es la puerta de entrada a nuestro cuarto oscuro, donde se nos revela lo sensible, lo sutil. 

Me tocan cincuenta minutos a paso medio para aflojar la carga de la semana, aunque pienso más bien en la dureza de los recientes acontecimientos. El clima es, en efecto, extraño. La sensación en el aire es rara, la misma de hace ya un año cuando se vaciaron las calles, a pesar de que otra vez están llenas. El cielo se pintó de gris y las majestuosas jacarandas contrastan arriba tanto como con el pavimento. Es un espectáculo de otro mundo ese violeta intenso, como sacado de la imaginación más insólita.

Casi nadie las vio el año pasado, nos encontrábamos encerrados, con la preocupación de si sobreviviríamos. Muchos no lo lograron, pero ellas sí volvieron. Tienen una suerte parecida a la de la música, que es como si reencarnara. Les pasa como a las melodías, que nunca se extinguen y viven simplemente a la espera de que alguien las descubra. Para eso existen.

No deja de sonar la canción, la escucho claro. Coincido con más corredores en el camino. Antes saludaba a todos y no me molestaba si no me devolvían el saludo. Hoy no vengo de humor y directamente ignoro a los chungos que llevan la mirada clavada al suelo con tal de no decir “Hola”. Siento ganas, la verdad, de mandar a chingar a su madre a más de uno. O de, cuando menos, decirle: «Caray, un poquito de cordialidad, pinche ojete (chinga tu madre)». Pero prefiero devolver mi concentración al violeta intenso que de cierto modo me sana en estos grises instantes. El mundo no necesita más apáticos.

Cuentan, de hecho, que el color violeta es sanador, que su luz es tan poderosa que almacena fuerzas como el amor, la misericordia, el perdón y la transmutación. Quizá por eso nos tranquilizan; a lo mejor por ello nos enamoran; tal vez por eso las extrañábamos. 

Probablemente como ellas, que —a su manera— se preguntarán por qué varios de los nuestros no regresaron.

This book recounts one of the greatest tragedies of the twentieth century: the siege of Leningrad. It is based on the searing testimony of eyewitnesses, some of whom managed to survive, while others were to die in streets devastated by bombing, in icy houses, or the endless bread queues. All of them, nevertheless, wanted to pass on to us the story of the torments they endured, their stoicism, compassion and humanity, and of how people reached out to each other in the nightmare of the siege.

Though the siege continues to loom large in collective memory, an overemphasis on the heroic endurance of the victims has tended to distort our understanding of events. In this book, which focuses on the "Time of Death", the harsh winter of 1941-42, Sergey Yarov adopts a new approach, demonstrating that if we are to truly appreciate the nature of this suffering, we must face the full realities of people's actions and behaviour. Many of the documents published here – letters, diaries, memoirs and interviews not previously available to researchers or retrieved from family archives – show unexpected aspects of what it was like to live in the besieged city. Leningrad changed, and so did the morals, customs and habits of Leningraders. People wanted at all costs to survive. Their notes about the siege reflect a drama which cost a million people their lives. There is no spurious cheeriness and optimism in them, and much that we might like to pass over. But we must not. We have a duty to know the whole, bitter truth about the siege, the price that had to be paid in order to stay human in a time of brutal inhumanity.
