i dont necessarily dislike the opinion that movies should be more about imagery texture and emotion than dialogue bc the visuals and sound are what make them unique as a medium + visual storytelling takes advantage of film’s particular characteristics like I can see where they’re coming from. but personally I like movies that are basically just dialogue I want to hear people screaming and yelling at each other + funny jokes also. but idk I really love visuals so I think its mostly bc of my personal failure to get immersed in a movie like feel like I’m inside it yk. and low attention span 😔🙏 sorry denis

#the exception is animation esp hand drawn #if I wanted to witness the beauty of the natural world I’d go outside and experience life #its nice don’t get me wrong like I really enjoy it but it doesn’t carry a movie for me yk #unless it’s a bunch of really good drawings in which case it does <3 #i will say that outside of personal taste I think movies can be very vague abr character motivation if theyre especially minimal #wrt dialogue #which makes it harder to get engaged in the sublime emotions of the story if you ask me #nothing wrong with primarily visual storytelling as long as you give your audience an in yk #^ofc emotional impact isn’t always the goal !! obviously the best approach depends on what a movie is trying to achieve #and dialogue vs visuals is a fake dichotomy I’m talking abt basically just for the sake of this post lol #long winded way of admitting I didn’t get dune 😔 I liked blade runner 2049 though

Does Trebonius make an exception for Mark Antony on his preference for older men ?

tbh the older men comment is an escalation on a long running topic of bickering between them, mostly that Antony keeps grilling him about getting married (it’s politically advantageous & a good wife is a kingmaker while peers are competition & you should be looking to outlive Caesar) & Trebonius keeps associating with older guys in both his personal life (he consider’s Cicero’s son to be like his own) and politically (Crassus&Pompey&Caesar) while ducking all of Antony’s attempts to introduce him to people (just not that interested/doesn't have the time for it, much to the despair of his parents)

however! Trebonius may or may not be hooking up with Cassius later depending on how things unfold as I write!

#he also periodically has a thing going on with Antony but it breaks off pretty definitively after Trebonius falls from Caesar’s favor #either way wrt to Cassius I do have a one shot comic planned bc I was reading State of Siege again and ohhhhhhhhh dialogue #ask tag

I actually cannot believe how fucking powerfully baldur's gate has gripped me

GOOD???#thank you bg3 #the PROBLEM is I don't even fucking have the full party yet and I'm already strategizing a Next Playthrough for Romance Reasons agsjfldhs #the good thing about June though is that everyone but lae'zel appeals to her soft heart #like astarion is shady and dangerous but he's also SO very obviously SO scared all the time #and SHADOWHEART--#June's 'I can fix him' disease really doing its job wrt dnd party harmony and fellow player character development lol #and the plot's gonna keep lae'zel relevant enough that I'm still gonna get to get into her stuff even though june Does Not Like Her One Bit #ALSO LIKE... it's very easy to just talk about the characters but the game is FUN even though I'm pretty bad at turned based strategizing #[rubs my little raccoon hands all over all the little bits of environmental storytelling and lore and npc dialogue and--]#about me #bg3

i've been quiet here to avoid major spoilers (posting them OR seeing them), but i started act 2 last night and holy shit, oh my god, this game is so good. it feels like a cross between playing dnd with the world's most competent DM and reading a really good fantasy novel.

#bog post #bg3 #bog plays bg3 #it feels like it stapled together elements of other games i really enjoyed #the companion dynamics remind me of dragon age (esp DAO)#there's a lot of witcher 3 vibes esp in the way disparate plots tend to flow toward each other #(despite being open world witcher 3's narrative was actually very good and intuitive - i stumbled into it trying to AVOID it #and it felt v natural)#the PC is very expressive despite not being able to audibly speak in dialogues #which is something XIV really started doing in later expansions too #there are other references and similarities i'm sure!#i can only speak to my personal bank of memories and there are lots of other good games out there #and i'm not trying to be competitive or put one thing down to lift another up #but BG3 feels like... the version of DAO that must have been living in the devs' minds?#DAO is ofc like 14 years old and made under very different circumstances #but i think that's BG3's closest point of comparison wrt games from other studios imo #this is how i felt when i really got my hooks into DAO and fell in love with dragon age

i think it's funny that most people ive seen liveblog the atla netflix show are like

english speakers: this fucking SUCKS ASS you're better off WATCHING THE OG SHOW!!!!!!! FUCK!!! [lengthy posts about every detail they got wrong]

spanish speakers: ive cried twenty times and im halfway through. i walked out of the room after finishing like a new man. it's not perfect, yes, but fuck, man.......... ..... ... omg cabbage man!!!! :D

#it's so funny to me. what the hell happens in that remake i still havent watched it #also spanish speakers have been surprisingly polite wrt spoilers i havent seen A SINGLE outright spoiler from them yet #and the english speakers just slap those bitches on the top of their post no context no warning then go on wiht their rants #not vaguing anyone here btw these are all from stuff ive seen on twitter and facebook i havent checked on tumblr #tortilla rambles #wonder if any details with the acting (like scenes where dialogues might sound off) arent like. Prevalent in the spanish version because of #the dub. would be fun if such a 'small' detail as the voices could be what sells or fails this show #also like i HAVE seen the spanish speakers complain about some of the changes. im not saying they think it's a masterpiece. but they're #taking it with far more grace than some people ive seen on twitter

also i feel like dai suddenly gets 10x weirder about its gay romances despite being labelled as being super lgbt friendly. i know the series has a reputation with wlw romances being toxic, but with the gay men it's also such an insane leap.. i love dorian as a character and im sure he was groundbreaking for a 2014 video game, but why does the only gay man have to have 90% of his personal story revolve around his sexuality at the cost of other character development... and why did they have a problem with solas being bi (because he's evil?) over bull, who is also fun but when he's one of the two bi companions it's a little 😬😬

#dragon age #like idgaf im mostly mad the inq romances suck so bad 😑😑😑#i feel like in da2 (not that im biased 🫡) fenris and anders' relationships were written fairly neutral wrt gender bc they had to be #but were given a new layer just bc of their characters' backstory if u played as mhawke #either wrt karl/the weird mage gay allegory thing or fenris' trauma + flashbacks #and zev i feel IS of his time bc of how many 'this is the gay sex button are you SURE' dialogue options you go through...#but as a romance his story is still good and works for any gender #i feel like i would've found blood magic conversion therapy moving if id played in 2014. but 10 years later its like. jesus christ lol #they could've at least had a balance like 50% sexuality and 50% focusing on the tevinter stuff which only #really appears in trespasser and the banters (if you can trigger them 😑)

#emerald speaks #spent a lot of time analyzing communication styles today and here's something i've concluded:#i am good at analysis and terrible at anecdotes #and this is why my writing ends up leaning clinical and explanatory #and why i'm sure i end up leaning towards certain characters #EG i like writing in the voice of the guy who calculates every threat the second he enters a room and the guy who likes asking 'why' about e #everything new or exciting he encounters #and i am absolutely awful at the ones who are social butterflies or good at connecting #not everyone wants a solution. sometimes they just want to talk for the sake of knowing someone else can relate #identifying that split is something i'm bad at #i'm thinking about this wrt to the ofic project #so the exercise: is to have my characters tell stories. to have them tell other people about their lives #side benefit of improving my dialogue #it will make them feel more real to people who read them #when i write analysis it feels real to me but i come off like a robot to most everyone else #idk i feel like i've broken through something today. that's very fun.

every time “wrt” shows up in text my brain reads it like “wirt” and so i go haha that’s the guy from good old otgw and then i go but okay i still have no idea what it means in this sentence & then continue on boldly into my life

Pieces from everything influence me, Christopher Rae's and Gemma Lawrence's novels, for example, both had some of the best and credible portrayals of Henry Norris I've ever read, both in credible unrequited love (tying into, Anne's wariness thereof) that was forged into a weapon against him and for why he became such a favourite of HVIII's in the first place (would've included Jeff Lavender's thesis of Norris also, had you asked for beyond fiction and non-fiction books). The best parts of all of the above have inspired me to craft AB as a character at turns, sympathetic and unsympathetic: proud, courageous, intelligent, zealous, prudent (more in the 16c sense than 21c), fierce, jealous, sensitive, vindictive, unyielding, talented, compassionate, bold, spirited, pious, impassioned, loyal, loving ...somebody who inspired either complete devotion or implacable hatred, with very little in between, and felt comparable extremes towards her own family, friends, and adversaries.

From my least favourite...I try to remember that every choice she made was morally defensible and/or justifiable, from her own perspective, regardless of whether or not it actually was (and of course, they weren't always). I try to remember also that fear and insecurity can best explain some of her less palatable choices, as enumerated here. Basically, just that she was human and flawed, but also that there were many people personally (and often, religiously) invested in magnifying her flaws and reducing, or even outright omitting, her strengths. Obviously, that misogyny can also be a factor in some of her portrayals, is a salient remembrance to keep in mind, as well.

#pls don't judge me for some of these lol #they are all my choices for entertainment and readability #and there are actually elements of tobg i really enjoy wrt anne's characterization that if excerpted i might actually love #i love how clear-eyed ; erudite ; ambitious and passionate she was #the film adaptation is sort of like a pale reflection of that in many ways . until the one horrible SA scene the film was actually like...#not bad i just think hviii was poorly cast . the physicality but not the charisma #or just loving the dialogue #and you did specifically say for understanding /enjoying ab as a figure/ character. not necessarily the the others in her sphere #threads im going to add sa tw and also it's really only the chapters of 16c AB which had any merit #and the same sa tw for dawn ius #also technically tobg novel even if not the same as in film #she portrays mary as 13/14 so..#in some of these like TLE and HVIII her appearance is VERY brief or ancillary but i still loved #also sa tw for TLE . damn . why is this so prevalent in tudor fiction....#anon #i mean jealous in two senses of the word also:#protective and mistrustful of unfaithfulness #both understandable traits for her to have in the circumstances she was in #my least favorites are ig TOBG even tho it's technically on this list-- lol-- altho it's way more entertaining than like #TKO by alison weir and honestly also TiL in some aspects #but somehow TLE and TiL both were better than TKO and her six wives book and also her hviii and court book #the king's damsel by kate emerson.... the concubine by norah lofts...jean plaidy...margaret george

People talking about Atom: The Beginning makin me miss when that one scanlation group stopped translating it into English bc it got picked up by an official publisher...

And then said publisher admitted to using AI translation, and it Showed, iirc...

#never actually tried to read it bc like. I have no money honey #but I remember someone somewhere talking about it?? maybe even in the old scanlation group's discord #dunno for sure tho so take that with a grain of salt #thing is; I've heard this claim about a few publishers that I hadn't really heard of before then #which leads me to wonder if it isn't bc they're smaller/less prominent publishers who can't afford- or don't want to pay for-#actual human translators and localization #(which you can only do so much localization on something that's canonically set in japan; anyways; imho)#(or rather to say; some things should be left more or less alone; add a footnote or endpage if you need to)#hell; there's this one series I'm reading rn that is only translated by AI used by a person who then cleans it up #and posts it onto mangadex; they can't do sound-effects or those little bits of hand-written one-off dialogue #or anything that's against a busy backdrop #and it's annoying; but it's the only way the story can be read; and it's a very interesting concept to me #admittedly it has Vibes to itd wrt treatment of female characters; but it's not the worst I've seen #there IS one who is a major backstabbing bitch for seemingly no reason; but she's part of a group of characters that are just Like That

just finished The Thorns Remain, a book that i can legitimately only describe as the antithesis of a court of thorns and roses

#i don’t know if i recommend just because for a fantasy novel it was so deeply sad in a very mundane way #like it’s a real ‘the horror is actually in the decidedly not fantastical elements’ read #and im just. very sad in an empty way #after reading it #lucys ramblings #this also isn’t crit although i’ll say sometimes the dialogue was heavy handed wrt like. making sure u saw the tropes theyre subverting #just u definitely need to be in a certain mood

Halsin's incredible patience and nonassertiveness (unless it's literal life or death), the way he never responds with more than mild irritation or hurt even when he's insulted, the way he lets everyone assume he has no feelings- while also struggling to externalize his own emotions (minus romantic ones)- the way he sees relationships differently than others, the way he holds disdain for most of how society views things, the way he is incredibly empathetic to the point of not being able to tolerate any suffering or unfairness, the way he has a poor sense of boundaries (particularly around sex), his dialogue if turned down by Tav about having thought their interest in his lovers was a sign of romantic interest, the implications that Thaniel was possibly his only childhood friend, his finding more companionship with animals than people to an even greater extent than most other Druids have, his extremely humble nature, the way he overfocuses on his goals to the point of letting everything else fall by the wayside, the rigidity of some of his ways of thinking especially WRT nature...
