#Repost @deptvetaffairs • • • • • • Fort Des Moines, Des Moines July 20, 1942, 78 years-ago, the first detachment of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), later known as WACs, began basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. During World War II, about 150,000 American women eventually would serve in the WAAC and WAC services, expanded from an originally planned enlistment of just 11,000 women. They were the first women other than nurses to serve in the U.S. military. WAAC’s were trained in 3 major specialties: the brightest were trained as switchboard operators, followed by mechanics and bakers. African-American women who served in the WAAC’s were subject to segregated units, janitorial duty assignments and sent on dates to sites where African-American service men were stationed. They were also denied access to many Red Cross and officers’ clubs. During WWII, approximately 350,000 women served in the U.S. military in various services. Between 460-550 lost their lives during the conflict, and 88 were held as POW’s. Women were not given full military benefits until 1948.
