A spring herbaceous perennial Anemone nemorosa 'Vestal' (wood anemone) grows from a slender rhizome. The white flowers have 6-7 normal petals surrounding a button-like centre of narrow staminodes which sit above deeply divided leaves.

Campanula americana aka American Bellflower, or Tall Bellflower, is native to the eastern US growing in moist open woods or partly shaded areas. Where summers are cool, like the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge, they will grow in full sun. I started these plants from seed years ago and they reseed every year to ensure another season of wonderfully blue blooms. Primula vulgaris ssp. sibthorpii (primrose) differs from the species Primula vulgaris (primrose) in having rose-pink, red, lilac, or white flowers, and is limited in its natural distribution to the Balkans. This subspecies is named in honour of John Sibthorp (1758-96) who was Professor of Botany at Oxford, UK.

Liparis liliifolia aka Large Twayblade or Mauve Sleekwort is a native terrestrial orchid coming into full bloom now. This patch (other outside of frame) is growing along my driveway. Several more patches are thriving elsewhere on my property. I always look forward to seeing every orchid that grows here come into bloom. Twayblades like moist woodland soils which we have an abundance of. Roast-beef plant. It's a wild iris with a crazy name. Iris foetidissima doesn't smell as fetid as its Latin name would have you believe, but if you rip up a leaf, you can get a whiff of someting kind of beefy. I totally smell beefy stock cube. Common names include stinking iris, gladdon, Gladwin iris, and stinking gladwin. Native to most of western Europe, Ireland, England, France, Italy, Greece, Spain and down to N.
