Elytrian wing design rant

I'm writing an SBI fic, with hybrids, of course, and I've been brainrotting on my design for Elytrian hybrids, so I really want to share what I have for them so far. So, on Origins SMP(one I have the barest of minimum knowledge of, so bear with me here), Philza is an Elytrian. And he's got Crow wings, meaning he has bird wings. And I'm pretty sure the actual Origins mod portrays Elytrians as a feathered origin. But, 'Elytra' aren't actually bird wings, theyre the protective shell on beetle wings, I decided to make Elytrian wings a mix of both. Basically, Elytrian wings have some kind of insect's wings(Moth, butterfly, beetle, damselfly, etc.) underneath the feathers of a bird(Crow, cardinal, blue jays, whatever, you get the gist.) And I was really excited about this, so... I drew some wings. Now, not all of these are actual wings of characters from my fic, I just wanted to have fun.

Lemme know what you think, if it's trash or not. I'm kind of a beginner artist ;-;

So here's a compilation of what I thought was worth scanning out of the end-of-sketchbook highlighter art! I wasn't sure if there is an audience for this, buuuut I'm just going to post it anyway.

This is actually my favorite way to draw wings - with a bunch of loose, scraggly shapes that are vaguely following the correct layout. It's very relaxing, though I haven't tried a lot of rendering so I'm not sure how they would translate to a finished piece.

Inktober 16 • “Martyr” “Blade” “Angel” and “Tears”

Sariel and Ephiel have been through it. After being raised by the same “Father” and captor, they consider themselves to be like twin brothers, despite no actual relation. Because of this, Ephiel will protect Sariel at all costs—taking whatever injuries he must to keep Sariel safe.

And the amount of wounds they faced in their lives was intense, especially for Ephiel. Both their wings had been torn, cut, and burned off…and eventually Ephiel’s just stopped growing back, leaving him a wingless angel.

Wings asker here; it seems like you draw the more “bulky” part in first? What shape do you use to start it off? (Such pretty birds)

OK !! these are. the general shapes I use. uh. Missing some? of the more comman ones? but this is. a big old area. I like to seperate my primaries and secondaries a Lot, I think it makes the wings look stylish and pretty :) that's the green line. You'll generally have 10 primaries, at the tip of the wings, and a huge range of like. 6-40 I think? depends on the bird, smaller it is the less secondaries. The primaries are generally all on the tip, and the bigger the wings the more curtain like it looks, with more secondaries as it goes. I like to keep the secondaries all nice n tidy together, and the primaries more spread out and individual, you can see where I split them off pretty clearly ahaa.

I unno I'm no professional [Yet!!] and these are verry stylized, but it's how I like to do them :) [1. sea birds, like albatross and seagulls n jaeger 2. vultures n stuff 3. doves n pigeons 4. itty bitty song birds, like chikadees]

I can also draw skin/bat wings but feather/bird wings are more fun with all the feathers \o/
