[ she ] lived in halloway for [ 21 years ] . before the town vanished they were studying [ mechanical engineering ] and lived at [ THE DORMS ]. most people knew the [ CISFEMALE ] as [ sharp-witted ] but i’ve heard they can also be [ - BRAZEN ]. for some reason, they feel [ relieved ] about the town’s disappearance. max was born and raised in halloway to the ‘never gonna get out of this place’ sorta people. only her mother did, shortly after she was born, in the middle of the night with no warning and no telling. of where she might go, leaving her with her father. woof.

her old man really tried. he was a good dad, but the man’s moral compass was all sorts of out of whack. he spent as much time as possible with max and took as good of care of her as possible but like honestly?? having a kid is EXPENSIVE. being alive is expensive, and the straight and narrow honest path doesn’t always get you what you need.

he ultimately fell back into old habits which meant he spent a lot of time in the city boosting cars only to bring them back to halloway to sell for parts or modify for street racing and upselling. this was a business he ran under the table at an autoshop in town that the duval family started decades prior.

max never really knew this was going on because he kept it very much separate from her. they spent a lot of time working in their garage at home together on his old beater truck and a couple of other junkers that came in through the years, but she never visited the autoshop past sundown. just figured dad was a mechanic by day and a bit dependent on alcohol most nights.

when she was around fifteen, though, a job went horribly wrong and put her father away for life. thus began max’s time in the system, three years and three different foster homes in and around the halloway area... which had her consistently frustrated because she A: knew being adopted wouldn’t happen since she was 15?? and B: had pretty much been taking care of herself her whole life so sticking her in a house seemed stupid.

duval’s autoshop was bought by a friend of her father’s who was a friend no more after the ordeal, and renamed. she got a job there when she was old enough, first running the front desk, then working under the hood. she’s a hands-on learner and caught on to anything her father didn’t teach her very quickly.

even though she was a hard worker and happily minded her own gd business... she’s her father’s daughter, and trouble always seemed to find her. sometimes it was her fault— because she’s got a temper and a knack for being fussy under heavy authority—, other times it was the preconceived judgements attached to her last name. “trouble’s in her dna” sort of thing.

18 rolls around and she’s made.... decent enough grades to get into a few schools with scholarships, but she opts to defer in order to work for a year and save up. lives out of her car for a little bit, couch surfs every now and then, stays with some very gracious hosts, and works her ass off until she’s able to go to school for mechanical engineering which is great!!!

but because she’s still in halloway, hat last name follows her, and a lot of local students kinda know who she is. know she's a bit sharp, a bit rough around the edges, from an icky background. but she did her best and kinda loved being able to actually work in labs and have friends and come back to the same dorm every now and again, even if she didn't have anywhere to go over holiday break. she was doing well fOR ONCE!!!

then the storm happened bc no one in halloway is ever allowed to be happy

it’s every man for themselves, last names and reputations be damned at first so despite initial panic she’s.. relieved, to say the least.

because her grey morality is no longer such a bad thing!! probably reveled in it for a while, hotwiring cars, picking locks, maybe took a bat to the window of an old foster home. then when she realized how serious the situation was ... she kinda ... started to promise herself that she wouldn't be the villain of this story!!!

and now?? well... like everyone else she’s just trying to survive, just trying to figure her shit out, and still takes no shit bc she is useful in this world and she will be damned if u make her feel like she’s not!!

P E R S O N A L I T Y

she may not be able to read jane austen in her free time at the speed of light, but max is sharp. she’s intuitive and knows how to take care of herself when the going gets rough. she’s quick to think on her feet and 110% a tactile learner as in... throw her into the fire and she’ll learn on the job. it’s why she’s so good with her hands and why she went into mechanical engineering.

she’s got... a lot of anger quietly bubbling under the surface bc she’s been dealt a shitty hand. but with no family, whose there to be mad at?? so she probably drinks more than she should... like father like daughter!!! because alcohol is cheaper than therapy my friends

a lil rambunctious, a lil rough around the edges. bold and a lil too fearless... never backs down from a dare even if she knows it’s a stupid one.

does not give up on herself and hates being underestimated. that said, she does have a tendency to give up on others quickly. she’s been let down a lot, and i mean, if you see a pattern and have no reason to believe someone’s going break it...

VERY loyal to the people she loves. she’d do anything for them, ethically questionable favors included, but these people are few and far between bc yikes! it’s hard to really get to know her

nice until you give her even the slightest reason not to be, and not much for second chances

she does not mind the disappearance because!! she has no one to go back to anyway. it also kinda gave her a clean slate. she’s useful here more than she is notorious. the playing field is more even. and like... the girl IS useful so !!! she’s better off here than back ‘home’, in her opinion

Well, that’s a whole bunch of fanon in one ask - because AGAIN it’s nowhere in canon that Leia and Han always fought (cf Return of the Jedi) or that Han was always absent (cf Bloodline) or that Leia put duty before all else (although what has she got left after her son turned into a murderous fascist which led to her brother and husband leaving)....but hey, let’s talk about the real issue here.

Someone asked me why you anons keep coming to my box and throwing in these asks, as if I’m magically going to say “Oh, Anon, you are so right! Of course, how was I so blind to not see that Kylo is the true victim here, not Lor San Tekka, the villagers, Luke’s students, Poe, Rey, or Han? It’s all about Kylo.”

Well, I think the reason is that you like baiting the Vulture so you can gather up some screen shots and go running back to your Kylostan fellow travelers to accuse us of being terrible and mean and heartless and abelist and whatever other names you can come up with, all the while saying that you are being bullied and we are calling you names - when I saw myself called a dumbass and a motherf**r. When my posts are properly tagged and I don’t spam every tag in creation, like I see certain Reylo/Kylostans do, so that we are enlightened by their tortured readings of, say, the economics of why the most profitable franchise in history needs to have Reylo happen.

So take this back to your gang and let me say that this is the LAST Reylo/Kylostan anon ask I’m answering. You can throw Reylo/Kylostan shit in my inbox and it’ll be deleted from now on, unless you want to put your name on it.

I don’t care what Adam Driver or JJ Abrams has to say about Kylo or whatever shit JJ decided Han and Leia “did” because he wanted a “badder than Vader” villain and the easy way to do that was make him kill a parent we cared about.

Because hey, there’s the original EU where Han and Leia and Luke were together for 45 years. There’s George Lucas’ original drafts that had Han and Leia still together, with good kids. And yes, that’s right, I’m saying Kylo isn’t a good kid and Han and Leia deserved better. And if that makes me “fill in the blank insult” then fine.

There’s the OT right there, where “abusive” “restless” Han stayed three years between New Hope and Empire and rode out to potentially die because he had to rescue Luke and came back into a collapsing command center to rescue Leia. There’s the guy who became a general in the cause. There’s the OT where “duty first” Leia who leaves the Alliance to go rescue Han.

Then I see you Kylostans yammering on about Leia and Han’s “anger management issues” when it was a war, when there were lives at stake. But that means “poor Kylo didn’t have a chance!” If Kylo was one millionth the person his parents were, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

You can keep getting in all our faces and screaming about how Han and Leia are the real villains and they were so mean to Kylo and abusive and just read this from JJ or Adam, it’s canon - when that is NOT canon BY DEFINITION.

It’s also not true. Because I know those characters. I know who Luke is, despite whatever is going to be done to him in Last Jedi - when even Mark Hamill is saying he disagreed with the characterization. I know who Han and Leia are.

And I know who Kylo is. He’s the real villain. And even if he miraculously turns his life around in Last Jedi, he is STILL a murdering, torturing, patricidal MAN of 30 who decided at 23 to destroy his parents’ and uncle’s lives because of reasons. Honestly, they can’t give me a reason that this would be an acceptable response. If they try to tell me some sob story about how Han and Leia never loved him or some shit, then I will sit there and tell you that the narrative is bullshit. It’s been bullshit from the moment it started in TFA, but that will be the crowing insult, in a franchise that for some damn reason decided that insulting, killing or never even mentioning the heroes of the OT - Luke, Han, Leia, Lando, Chewie, Threepio and Artoo - was good business.

I just read Daisy Ridley doesn’t want to be Rey past ep 9, I believe. Good for her. I’m guessing she saw what happens when they bring you back in Star Wars - they destroy everything your character was because “times change” or whatever. I hope John Boyega tells them to take a flying leap too, especially after the garbage that has been this marketing campaign. They need to get out and stay out so that one of them isn’t killed when Finn and Rey’s child turns into the next dark lord because it’s edgy and cool.

My A03 username, and main blog and twitter and facebook and freaking discord and literally every single thing is Darke_Eco_Freak either with hyphens, spaces or underscores and basically I was an edgy 11 year old who loved Jak II and the concept of the evil version of the protag Jak. Only I wanted to be extra Edge™ so I added an extra E to dark.

Idgaf. I’ve written necro, cannibalism, torture porn, self-insert stuff. Honestly I dump most of what my other fandom wouldn’t accept on this one. Plus Fyodor is a very easy character to manipulate for me so it’s always fun.

10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.

I’d like to be better about my chaptered fics, not abandoning them and things like that. Also, action scenes, I want to get better at those.

11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?

I multiship myself to hell. For this fandom I write whatever catches my eye because I don’t know the characters all that well? The running meme of me not watching the show is still a thing. In my other fandom, I’m one of the few writers around and I write every single ship I can think of cause I can.

12. How many stories have you posted on AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?

One my darke account: 73, on my other account; 10 but I post a lot to tumblr and don’t really cross post all that much.

13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?

I can’t tell you that because I just keep huge word docs around but for the year I’ve written about 600 k so that’s cool.

I just write off the top of my head most of the time, I’ll talk out a plot with a friend sometimes but otherwise it’s just whatever I feel as the day goes.

I have, two, soon to be three.

I think I saw someone on ff.net mention it and I started looking at the site.

17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on AO3?

Fuck no lol. I’m here writing the rarest of pairs and writing oc/characters, not to mention in first person sometimes and those tags alone mean ppl won’t read. Eh, I’m just posting to archive to bolster the number of fics a character has tbh. (this is for BSD fandom but I’ve never been a popular/famous author in any fandom)

18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?

Umm, half the time I’m not sure I have ppl beyond friends who read my fics so yeah.

19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?

I’d say Lakshmi Persad, a local author. Mostly because I hated having to do that book in lit class and wanted to do better than her.

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?

If you want it, make it. I’m serious, don’t count on anyone to make the content you want to see, do it yourself and people might follow suit, if not, at least you made it. Hella.

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?

I finish stories and still have no idea if I figured them out or not.

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?

I’ve gotten a few, mostly I ignore them. But there was this one fic, it wasn’t for anyone but me and I shouldn’t have posted it at all but I did and someone told me that the characterization was completely wrong for the character I was writing and I ended up leaving the fic alone for months and months. I got back to it eventually but I’m not sure if I’ll ever finish that fic tbh.

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)

Action gives me joint pain. I just how do you make it flow?

I can’t plan to save my life

26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?

It used to be 300 a day now it’s 2k because apparently I hate myself. Most of the time I meet it, between the two fandoms I write for daily so yay.

27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?

Absolutely.

28. What is your favorite story that you’ve written?

Step back Through Time and Remember my Touch, definitely those two. One’s the original fic and the other is the sequel. Best things I wrote all year

Maybe Gone, that’s a really old one but god the cringe.

30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?

Hopefully I figured out those damn action scenes.

31. What is the easiest thing about writing?

I think bringing the characters to life in my own head is the easiest thing.

32. What is the hardest thing about writing?

Not letting lack of feedback get to me cause I’m not writing popular shit, I don’t expect it but god damn it gets discouraging as fuck to see something I worked hard on just kinda flop and drown.

33. Why do you write?

I can’t do anything else and crave validation like the attention whore I am.
