i hope that with loreen's second victory that eurovision doesn't become, for lack of a better word, swedified for the next 3 years. eurovision needs to stay fun and camp, and i don't know if it really did that for a while after 2012.

round up // MARCH + APRIL 21
Tumblr media
March and April were a whirlwind of vaccines and awards shows! A full year after we starting staying at home, the end of this weird chapter in recent history seems like it might finally be coming to a close, and this pop culture awards season—typically a time full of fun and glamour—captured our moment weirdly well. (Emphasis on the weird.) This month’s recommendations is filled with more Critic Picks than usual, so without further delay, let’s dive right in...
March + April Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
Double Feature — 2018 Action Thrillers: Bad Times at the El Royale + Den of Thieves
In Bad Times at the El Royale (Crowd: 9/10, // Critic: 8/10), Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Jon Hamm, Chris Hemsworth, and Dakota Johnson are staying at a motel on the California-Nevada state line full of money, murder, and mystery. In Den of Thieves (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 6.5/10), Gerard Butler takes on some of the best bank robbers in the world. Whether you like your action with a dose of mystery or the thrills of plot twists, these will fit the bill.
Tumblr media
Double Feature — ‘80s Comedies: Caddyshack (1980) + Splash (1984)
In the mood for pure silliness? Take your pick between a mermaid and a gopher! Five years before The Little Mermaid, Tom Hanks fell for Daryl Hannah’s blonde hair and scaly tail, and John Candy was his goofy brother in Splash (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10). And four years before Ghostbusters, Bill Murray was the goof on a golf course full of funny people like Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Ted Knight in Caddyshack (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10).
Tumblr media
Double Feature — 1980s Coming-of-Age Films Starring Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, and Challenging Brother Relationships That Influenced Stranger Things: Stand by Me (1986) + The Lost Boys (1987)
Believe it or not, I had no idea these two ‘80s classics had so much in common when I chose to watch them back-to-back. In Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Stand by Me (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10), four kids (Feldman, Jerry O’Connell, River Phoenix, and Wil Wheaton) are following train tracks to find a missing body. In The Lost Boys (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10), Corey Haim and Jason Patric move to a small California town and discover it’s full of ‘80s movie star cameos and…vampires? One is a thoughtful coming-of-age story and one is just bonkers, but both are a great time.
Tumblr media
Spaceman by Nick Jonas (2021)
My love for the Jonas Brothers is well-documented, so instead of going down the rabbit hole I started digging at 15, I’ll talk about how Nick Jonas’s latest solo album will likely appeal to a wider audience than just the fans of the brothers’ bombastic pop records. It’s full of catchy tunes you’ll play on repeat and an R&B-influenced album experience about the loneliness we’ve experienced in the last year and how we try to make long-term relationships work.
Tumblr media
Ted Lasso (2020- )
I love stories about nice people crushing cruelty and cynicism with relentless kindness, and Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is the warmest, most dedicated leader this side of Leslie Knope. Be sure to catch up on these witty and sweet 10 episodes before season 2 drops later this summer.
Tumblr media
Double Feature — Tony Scott Action Flicks: Enemy of the State (1998) + The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)
Tony Scott’s movies have got explosions and excitement in spades. I love a good man-on-the-run movie, and in Enemy of the State (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10), Will Smith is running through the streets of D.C. after getting evidence of a politician’s (Jon Voight) part in a murder. I also love a tense story set in a confined space, which is what Denzel Washington is dealing with in The Taking of Pelham 123 (Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 7/10) after a hammy John Travolta takes a New York subway train hostage.
Tumblr media
Double Feature — Baseball Movies: The Natural (1984) + Trouble With the Curve (2012)
Sue me—I love baseball movies. Robert Redford plays a fictional all-time great in the early days of the MLB in The Natural (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10), and Clint Eastwood plays a fictional all-time great scout in his late career in Trouble With the Curve (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7.5/10). If you love baseball or actors like Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, and Justin Timberlake, these movies are just right here waiting for you.
youtube
Nate Bargatze: The Greatest Average American (2021)
Sue me—I enjoy Netflix standup comedy specials that are safe enough to watch with your whole family. That’s exactly the crowd I laughed with over Easter weekend, and while the trailer captures Bargatze’s relaxed vibe, it doesn’t capture how funny he really is.
Tumblr media
The Mighty Ducks (1992)
I thought somewhere in my childhood I’d seen at least one of The Mighty Ducks movies, but after watching all three, I think my memories must’ve come from previews on the VHS tapes for other Disney movies I watched over and over again. The original still holds up as an grown-ups, which is why even my parents got sucked in to this family movie while just passing through the living room. Bonus for ‘80s movies lovers: Emilio Estevez is basically continuing Andrew Clark’s story from The Breakfast Club as an adult. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10
Tumblr media
Double Feature — New, Dumb Action on Streaming: Godzilla vs. Kong + Thunder Force (2021)
If you want something intelligent, go ahead and skip to the next recommendation, but if you’re looking for something stupid fun, these are ready for you on HBO Max and Netflix. Thunder Force (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6/10) follows Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer as they train to become superheroes who take on superhuman sociopaths wreaking havoc on Chicago, and alongside Jason Bateman, they do it with a lot of laughs. Godzilla vs. Kong (Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 5/10) is, um, exactly what it sounds like, so I’ll skip a plot summary and just say it’s exactly what you want from this kind of movie. #TeamKong
Tumblr media
3:10 to Yuma (2007)
All you need to know is Russell Crowe is an outlaw, and Christian Bale is the guy who’s got to get him on the train to prison. I also watched the 1957 version, which is also a solid watch if you love classic Westerns. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Marvel’s newest series isn’t nearly as inventive as WandaVision, and it may not land every beat, but it’s worth a watch for the fun new gadgets, Sebastian Stan’s dry joke delivery, and its exploration into themes of what makes a hero and what governments owe their citizens. It’s a pretty satisfying entry in the MCU canon, but I’d also recommend re-watching Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War—the canon is getting expansive, and it’s getting trickier every year to keep up with all the backstory.
March + April Critic Picks
Tumblr media
Best of 2020 Picks
As per usual, the months leading up to the Oscars becomes a binge period for potential Oscar nominees. In March and April, I watched many of the films that made my Top 20 of 2020, including Boys State, The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Let Them All Talk, Minari, Nomadland, On the Rocks, One Night in Miami…, Promising Young Woman, Soul, and Sound of Metal. You can read how I ranked them on my list for ZekeFilm, plus reviews of The Father, Minari, Promising Young Woman, and Soul.
Bonus: If you loved On the Rocks, don’t miss this feature and beautiful photography starring Sofia Coppola, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Rashida Jones for W Magazine.
Tumblr media
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
What would you do if you started hearing a voice who narrated your every thought and move? If you’re Will Ferrell, you’ll seek out a literary professor (Dustin Hoffman), fall in love (with Maggie Gyllenhaal), and track down the voice (Emma Thompson) who’s making ominous predictions about your future. Stranger Than Fiction is funny thought-provoking, and an unusual but welcome role for Ferrell. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
All the Royal Family News
Speaking of stranger than fiction, it’s been a busy few months for the Royal Family. We’ve celebrated 95th birthday of Queen Elizabeth, the 3rd birthday of Prince Louis, and the 10th anniversary of Will and Kate’s marriage. We also lost Prince Philip, and we watched the drama of Harry and Meaghan’s interview with Oprah. No matter what happens to their Crown, I don’t think we’ll ever get over our fascination with the Windsor family. A few pieces worth reading from the last few months:
“In Meghan and Harry’s Interview, Two TV Worlds Collided,” Vulture.com
“The Queen’s Man: Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Dies,” TIME.com
“Obituary: HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” BBC.com
Tumblr media
Goodfellas (1990)
One of my film opinions that makes me feel like a phony is that Martin Scorsese just isn’t my cup of tea. He’s brilliant, but his films tend to be long and dark, two qualities that are never my first choice…and somehow Goodfellas still worked for me? Maybe it was the TV edit graciously toning down the violence or maybe it was that Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci were firing on all cylinders, but for some reason this ‘90s classic didn’t suck the joy out of my evening like Scorsese often does. (Bonus: For a Martin Scorsese/Robert De Niro I don’t really recommend, head to the last section of this Round Up.)
youtube
Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (2021)
Her voice has only matured, so Taylor Swift revisiting her old albums is like upgrading a blast to the past. Plus, the six new tracks make me feel like 15 crushing on that boy in Spanish class again, and her Grammys performance (just before her third Album of the Year win) was magical and folklore-tastic.
Tumblr media
Double Feature — ‘60s Action Classics: The Guns of Navarone (1961) + Planet of the Apes (1968)
The Guns of Navarone (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10) follows Gregory Peck and David Niven as they destroy Nazi weapons in the Mediterranean. Planet of the Apes (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10) follows Charlton Heston as he attempts to escape from, well, a planet full of apes. The pacing of ‘60s films doesn’t always hold up, but that’s not the case with this pair. Both are still full of suspense, and you can’t go wrong hanging with casts like these.
Tumblr media
Let Him Go (2020)
Kevin Costner and Diane Lane play a farming couple who unexpectedly help raise a boy who lost his biological father—sound familiar? But instead of a superhero origin story, they’re part of a thrilling Western with performances nuanced (Costner and Lane) and showy (Lesley Manville). If I’d watched this before completing my Best of 2020 piece, it likely would’ve been on my list. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
youtube
The Oscars
I’m a ride-or-die fan of the Academy Awards, but I’ll admit even I found this year’s ceremony odd. Instead of focusing on what wasn’t so hot, I’ll recommend a few moments you don’t want to miss:
Emerald Fennell giving a shout-out to Saved by the Bell
Daniel Kaluuya acknowledging his parents’ sex life during his acceptance speech (??)
Yuh-Jung Yoon flirting with Brad Pitt and acknowledging she’s just “luckier” than her fellow nominees
Glenn Close dancing to…”Da Butt”?
You can also read about the historic wins and nominations from this year’s Oscar class and why the Golden Globes were an even stranger production weeks earlier.
youtube
Trailer-palooza!
Movies are on their way back, y’all! I’m counting down the days until I can get back to a theatre, and even if some of these movies are duds, I’m planning to see all of them on a big screen if possible:
Those Who Wish Me Dead (May 14)
Cruella (May 28)
In the Heights (June 11)
Space Jam 2 (July 16)
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (September 3)
West Side Story (December 10)
Also in March + April…
To add to the Oscars love, you can listen to a conversation about what we learn about family, community, and society in some of the year’s biggest nominees on the Uncommon Voices podcast. I join regular hosts Michael and Kenneth in this episode, and I recommend all of their thoughtful discussions on their “What’s Streaming” episodes.
I’ve previously recommended the Do You Like Apples weekly newsletter, so I’m proud to share I contributed twice in March! I wrote about Love and Basketball, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, and one of my all-time favorite Julia Roberts rom-coms, Notting Hill. (I also tied to win their Oscars pool, but I suppose that’s less exciting for you than me.)
It was a busy couple of months on SO IT’S A SHOW! New logo, new email list, new Instagram, and a host of new episodes about a flop of a Madonna flick, a Swedish children’s TV show, an urban legend turned into a horror movie, one of the best films about journalism ever, and a Martin Scorsese movie about a real boxer.
Most of what I wrote for ZekeFilm in March and April was mentioned in Best of 2020 recommendations…except for The Nest, a film that couldn’t figure out what genre it wanted to be.

Grading Super Bowl XLVII
What was the final score?
Baltimore 34, San Francisco 31
Tumblr media
How much of the game was close? What was the “edge of your seat factor” like? (20 points)
Despite the final score, most of this game wasn’t close. The Ravens took a 21-6 lead into halftime and extended that lead on the opening kickoff of the second half. Kick returner Jacoby Jones caught the kickoff eight yards deep in his own end zone and shot through the coverage team like a bolt of lightning for a 108-yard touchdown. Jones’s kickoff return tied the NFL record (both regular and postseason) for longest scoring play of any kind. At that point, it was 28-6 and the vultures had begun to circle over the Niners’ season.
Tumblr media
But a funny thing happened on the way to a blowout. After a 34-minute delay for a power outage inside the stadium (more on the delay later), it was a completely different game. It looked like someone had turned the 49ers off, then back on again. San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick went from looking like a decent but unremarkable passer to looking like Steve Young. Kaepernick utterly shredded Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and the rest of the Ravens’ star-studded defense. The Niners put up 17 points in just over four minutes and all of a sudden it was 28-23 instead of 28-6.
Tumblr media
After that blizzard of points, the rest of the game was a nailbiter. A Justin Tucker field goal extended the Ravens’ lead to 31-23, a touchdown and successful two-point conversion being the difference. Kaepernick looked at that, shrugged, and five plays later had his team in the end zone. The Niners needed a two-point conversion to tie the score, but Kaepernick overthrew Randy Moss on the attempt. It was 31-29 Baltimore with roughly ten minutes left in the Super Bowl. There was plenty of time for the 49ers to take the lead and win the game.
Most of that time would be gone before the San Francisco offense got the ball back. Baltimore used healthy doses of running backs Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce to drive downfield and keep the clock rolling. That drive ended with a Tucker field goal and a 34-29 lead. There was 4:23 remaining in regulation. Again, that was plenty of time for the Niners, particularly with an offense that was firing on all cylinders in the second half. Kaepernick led them on an impressive 75-yard drive, using his arm and his legs to make things happen along the way. That’s the good news for San Francisco. The bad news was that they started the drive on their own 20, meaning they needed 80 yards instead of 75. The drive that could have ended with Kaepernick cementing a legendary place in Super Bowl history instead ended with an incomplete pass on fourth and goal from the Baltimore 5.
But the game wasn’t over at that point. Not by a longshot. It was clear that the Ravens would run as much clock as possible, but just as clear that San Francisco would get the ball back with a few seconds left on the clock.
With 1:46 left on the clock, Joe Flacco handed the ball to Ray Rice. Rice gained two yards, out to the seven yard line. The 49ers responded by calling their third and final timeout of the half with 1:42 left. The second down play was another run, of course, this time Bernard Pierce running around left end but obviously avoiding going anywhere near the sideline. Going out of bounds would have stopped the clock, which was not something that would have endeared him to his teammates, coaches, or fans. With the clock still running, Baltimore didn’t have to snap the ball again until the clock reached 0:56. Fullback Vontae Leach went off right guard on third down, again going nowhere near the sideline. With the Ravens getting 40 seconds in between plays, it had become clear San Francisco would get the ball back. The question had become how best for Baltimore to do that.
As fourth down approached, the Ravens ran the play clock down all the way, then called a timeout with 0:12 remaining in the game. Baltimore decided to do the most logical thing possible in this situation: They snapped the ball to punter Sam Koch, who had been told to run around in the end zone as long as he could, to not kick the ball under any circumstances, and to step out of bounds when he was about to be tackled. Koch burned eight of the twelve remaining seconds while giving away that intentional safety.
Tumblr media
There were four seconds remaining on the clock when the Ravens lined up for the free kick. A poor kick by Koch would have allowed the Niners to call a fair catch and attempt an unchallenged field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime. That wasn’t a problem, though. Koch blasted the free kick more than 60 yards downfield to the waiting Ted Ginn inside the San Francisco 20. If Ginn decided to return it, there wouldn’t be enough time for a play from scrimmage. If Ginn decided to fair catch the ball, the Niners would probably be way too far back in their own territory to attempt a Hail Mary bomb into the end zone. Ginn chose to return the kick, which was almost certainly the right move. It was a nice return too, out to midfield before being tackled. Unfortunately for San Francisco, the clock expired during Ginn’s return. Game over; the Ravens had escaped with a 34-31 win. (Score: 11 out of 20)
Was there any kind of comeback? Was there ever any indication that the team which was trailing had a chance to come from behind and win? (15 points)
Missed it by that much. At the time Super Bowl XLVII was played, the biggest comeback in the history of the Super Bowl had been 10 points. The 49ers had been down by 22 points in the second half and nearly come away with a victory.
Tumblr media
Missed it by that much.
If you would have asked me early in the fourth quarter who would win the game, with the Ravens leading 28-23, I probably would have picked San Francisco. The Baltimore offense had gone dormant and the 49er offense looked unstoppable. This game was a whisker away from becoming one of the greatest comebacks in football history. That the comeback didn’t succeed is only a minor detail in scoring this category. (Score: 14 out of 15)
Did the great players come through with great performances? (15 points)
Eh, not really. San Francisco receiver Randy Moss, who seems like he should be a lock to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the class of 2018, only had two catches. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, who’s probably about to go into the Hall alongside Moss, was fairly pedestrian. Lewis had seven tackles, but none of them were for loss. The 49ers seemed determined to not allow Lewis to be an impact player, often working to get him into coverage on tight end Vernon Davis. Ray Lewis was terrific at a lot of things (run stopping, getting to the ballcarrier and making a tackle, intentionally misleading police during the investigation of a double murder), but he wasn’t going to stop a big, quick, athletic tight end in pass coverage downfield.
San Francisco running back Frank Gore, who as of this writing is in the top five in NFL history in career rushing yards, put together an impressive performance. Gore had 19 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Baltimore kick returner Jacoby Jones was a first-team All-Pro in 2012; he set Super Bowl records with 290 combined yards, two touchdowns of 50+ yards, and a 108-yard kickoff return touchdown.
Tumblr media
The players who weren’t quite great, but were instead very good, generally put together strong performances in this game. Ravens WR Anquan Boldin (6 receptions, 104 yards, 1 TD) and Niners receivers Vernon Davis (6-104-0) and Michael Crabtree (5-109-1) were all impact performers.
Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco has never quite been star-level, but you wouldn’t have known by his performance in this game. Flacco was a deserving Super Bowl MVP, completing 22 of 33 pass attempts for 287 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
For the Niners, quarterback Colin Kaepernick was a bit of a question mark going into this game. Super Bowl XLVII was only the tenth start of Kaepernick’s professional career. He went into the 2012 season as Alex Smith’s backup, but took over the starting job when Smith suffered a concussion. Smith never did get his starting job back in San Francisco. Anyway, Colin Kaepernick. He was magnificent in the second half after a bit of a hit-and-miss first half. Kaepernick completed 16 of 28 passes for 302 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. In addition, he ran the ball seven times for 62 yards and a score. It’s almost as if he’s good at playing football. (Score: 9 out of 15)
Tumblr media
Were the teams historically great? (10 points)
Nope. The 2012 Ravens were a pretty good team, but not much more. They finished the season 10-6, tied for the worst record of any team in the playoffs that season. Baltimore’s offense was 16th out of 32 NFL teams in yards gained. The defense was 17th in yards allowed. Everything about this team screamed “not too shabby but unremarkable”, other than the fact that they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the Super Bowl. This Ravens team doesn’t get a ton better in context of the seasons around 2012. They did go 24-8 in the regular season in the two previous seasons, but then went 8-8, missed the playoffs, and were outscored by their opponents in 2013. Again, on the whole it was a pretty good resume. It’s just not exactly “1970s Steelers” or “1980s 49ers”.
The 49ers were much the same. They hadn’t had a winning season in nearly a decade before head coach Jim Harbaugh showed up in 2011, then they went 13-3, 11-4-1, and 12-4 in Harbaugh’s first three seasons. They haven’t had a winning season since. For those three years, this was a very good team. If you zoom out a bit, though, you see that those three years of excellence came in the middle of a 15-season span in which the Niners have changed coaches eight times. As I write this, in the past four seasons, the 49ers have had four coaches: Harbaugh in 2014, Jim Tomsula in 2015, Chip Kelly in 2016, and Kyle Shanahan in 2017. You don’t do that if you’re even remotely close to historically great. (Score: 7 out of 10)
Were there memorable moments that will be talked about for decades? (10 points)
Absolutely. Two immediately come to mind, both of which came towards the start of the third quarter: The Jacoby Jones kickoff return and The Blackout.
I’ve written above about the Jones return touchdown, so I won’t go into it here. Obviously, it was a memorable and exciting moment that played a big part in determining the Super Bowl champion.
The Blackout was perhaps THE turning point in this game. Three plays into the second half, the Superdome suffered a power outage that delayed the game for more than 30 minutes. At the time of the stoppage, the score was 28-6 and the 49ers looked dead in the water. Almost immediately upon the resumption of play, the roles reversed. The Ravens went three-and-out on their first possession, then the Niners scored a touchdown. And then the Ravens went three-and-out on their second possession, then the Niners scored a touchdown. It’s probably way too simple to say that the blackout was the cause of the reversal. But it would be one heck of a coincidence if the two things were completely unrelated. (Score: 10 out of 10)
Tumblr media
How was the quality of play? Were there a lot of penalties, punts, and turnovers? (15 points)
The quality of play was good, as you’d tend to expect in a game between two championship-caliber teams. The Ravens had one turnover, the 49ers had two. Each team punted three times, a relatively light workload for their punters. There were only 53 total penalty yards in the entire game.
Nothing about the play was remarkable, other than the fact that it was consistently good. (Score: 11 out of 15)
Are there any other factors that add to the greatness the game? This covers things like weather, story line, rivalry matchup, legacy franchises, unexpected results, etc. (15 points)
I don’t know whether I should include the blackout here. I sort of think I shouldn’t, because I already counted it in the “memorable moments” category. Maybe I’ll consider it as a minor factor.
The big story in the lead-up to this game was the coaching matchup. Baltimore’s head coach, John Harbaugh, and San Francisco’s head coach, Jim Harbaugh, are brothers. This was a remarkable development - just one year earlier, they had become the first pair of brothers to be NFL head coaches at the same time. Now the Harbaughs were facing off in the Super Bowl. Their father, Jack, was also a successful head coach, having won the Division I-AA National Championship as the head coach at Western Kentucky in 2002. (I’d lose my Bowling Green card if I didn’t shoehorn in a reference to Jack’s time as an assistant coach at BGSU.)
Tumblr media
In addition to the Harbaugh angle, Super Bowl XLVII was the final NFL game for two pro football legends. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis had already announced that he would retire after the game, win or lose. The future was a bit murkier for 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss. Moss retired after the 2010 season, sat out in 2011, then came out of retirement to play for the 2012 Niners. One of the greatest receivers in football history, Moss was a spare part as a 49er, playing as the third wideout in an offense that frequently used a tight end as a downfield threat. The Niners didn’t invite Moss back for 2013; he was widely praised as an off-field influence, but was clearly a shadow of his former self. It was an amicable breakup, by all accounts.
The Ravens played the season in honor of recently deceased owner Art Modell. I wish it were possible for me to say something nice about Modell, but it isn’t. My mom’s from Cleveland, my siblings were born in Cleveland, I grew up less than an hour from Cleveland. Simply typing “Art Modell” raises my blood pressure noticeably. So I’ll leave it there. Modell died, the team honored him. The end.
There was quite a bit of attention paid to Colin Kaepernick in the leadup to the game. As I mentioned earlier, Kaepernick became the Niners’ starting quarterback after Alex Smith suffered a concussion in November. Jim Harbaugh broke the unspoken, unofficial rule that players don’t lose their jobs due to injury and left Kaepernick in the starting role even after Smith was ready to return. This was a controversial decision, not least because Smith had been named the offensive player of the month earlier in 2012 and completed more than 70 percent of his passes on the season. Eyebrows were raised. Let’s just say that. (Score: 14 out of 15)
Tumblr media
Um, guys? Hello?
How does the game grade overall? (sum of all previous categories, 100 points)
76 out of 100. Not quite Top 10, but still very good. It gets hurt because half of the game looked like a blowout and because neither team was inner-circle great.

The Top Ten REGULAR SEASON Wins of the Pete Carroll Era
Tumblr media
Inspired by the massive win over the Rams on Thursday night, I decided to rank the biggest REGULAR SEASON wins of the Pete Carroll era. Some honorable mentions are the 2012 win in Chicago where a rookie Wilson led two game winning drives, the 2013 comeback in Houston where Russell Wilson was otherworldly and Richard Sherman’s pick six forced overtime, and the 2014 overtime win against the Broncos in the Super Bowl rematch. Here’s my list.
10: 2010 Week 17 against the Rams:
People forget about this game because of what happened the week after (the Beast Quake), but it was a Sunday Night game where if Seattle lost, they missed they playoffs entirely, and if they won, they became the first team ever to make it with a losing record. Without longtime QB Matt Hasselbeck, the Seahawks were forced to play Charlie Whitehurst, making just his second career start. Seattle was looking for a home run out of the gate, and got it on just the second play of the night, as Whitehurst connected with Ruvell Martin for a 61 yard bomb, and would throw a TD to Mike Williams five plays later. That would be the only touchdown by either team in this defensive slugfest in Seattle, as the Seahawk would win 16-6.
Tumblr media
9. 2018 Week 16 against the Chiefs:
The expectations were low for the 2018 Seahawks after they lost two Legion of Boom members in the offseason and a third (Earl Thomas) in week 4. However, the team was resilient, tough, and led by Russell Wilson, playing his best football yet. All of their leader’s talents were on display at home in a Sunday night game against eventual MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on the day before Christmas Eve. With a playoff spot waiting for them if they won, the Seahawks handed the ball to Chris Carson 27 times, and he repaid them with 117 yards and two scores. Mahomes was as unstoppable on that night as he had been throughout that magical season, but he was outplayed by Wilson, who made unbelievable throws all night long, including the perfect sideline strike to Baldwin and the moonshot bomb to Lockett. Wilson’s wizardry proved too much for the Chiefs defense to handle, and Seattle won 38-31.
Tumblr media
8. 2017 Week 8 against the Texans:
This game started with Deshaun Watson (who really showed out all day) finding Will Fuller deep over the middle of the field for a 59 yard TD, beating Will Fuller. In Houston’s next drive, Watson looked for Hopkins over the middle, and Thomas jumped the route and took it 75 yards to the house. It was a spectacular start to a spectacular game that saw Russell Wilson throw for a franchise record 452 yards, and every one of them was necessary to beat Houston. The ‘Hawks received the ball down four with 1:39 on the game clock, needing to drive 80 yards to win the game. Wilson did it in just three plays, with a 47-yard bomb to Paul Richardson and a 19-yard bullet to Tyler Lockett setting up a quick 18 yard laser to Jimmy Graham as he galloped into the end zone. The Texans had one last gasp, but Watson was picked by Richard Sherman on his Hail Mary attempt, securing the Seahawk win.
Tumblr media
7. 2013 Week 13 against the Saints:
The Seahawks were first in the NFC at 10-1, but the 9-2 Saints were hot on their tails, and this Monday night battle would go a long way in determining homefield advantage in the 2013 playoffs. It was lopsided from the start, as halfway through the first quarter, Cliff Avril forced the ball out of Drew Brees’ hand into the waiting arms of Michael Bennett, who stomped into the end zone to give the ‘Hawks a 10-0 lead. Russell Wilson was magnificent throughout the 34-7 bludgeoning, going 22-30 with three TD tosses, and added 47 yards on the ground. Due in large part to this early December game, the Saints had to travel to Centurylink field in the divisional round to face the Seahawks, who took care of business handily once again.
Tumblr media
6. Week 16 at Arizona:
A win in this game would’ve secured Arizona’s first NFC title since 2009, but they were starting their third string quarterback, Ryan Lindley. It was a defensive battle early, until Luke Willson got behind the Arizona defense for an 80 yard catch and run TD. Willson had a huge game matched up against the much slower LB Larry Foote, ending up with three catches for 139 yards and two scored. The signature play of this game came in the fourth quarter, when Marshawn Lynch broke a couple of tackles at the line of scrimmage, bounced outside to the right sideline, put his head into Patrick Peterson’s chest while somehow staying inbounds, broke an ankle tackle attempt from Alex Okafor, and dived backwards into the end zone for a beastly 79 yard score. He did all of this after missing the first couple drives with an upset stomach! Seattle won 35-6, and win the division.
5. 2013 Week 2 against the 49ers:
This game had as much buildup for an early regular season game as any I can ever remember. Th 49ers were the defending NFC champs coming into Seattle, where the 12th Man would be attempting to (and succeeding in) breaking the world record for loudest crowd. The Kaepernick-Wilson comparisons were flying all over the place, and the two even did a commercial where they made a bet that the loser would have to shave off an eyebrow. The only Seahawk to ever win MVP, Shaun Alexander, raised the 12th Man flag to kickoff this game between bitter rivals, and it was a close one through a first half that included an hourlong rain delay. On the first drive of the second half, though, the Seahawks drove right down the field and scored a Marshawn Lynch TD to take a 12-0 lead. This opened the floodgates, as Wilson hit Lynch for a short TD, followed by a Richard Sherman pick that set up a field goal, and a Kam Chancellor INT that set up Lynch’s third score of the night. It was a perfect home opener for the best season in franchise history, a season that would come to a crescendo on that same field against those same hated 49ers.
Tumblr media
4. 2012 Week 6 against the Patriots:
You could make a case that this was both the game where the Legion of Boom became the Legion of Boom, and that Russell Wilson became Russell Wilson. I’m just his sixth career game, Wilson came out of the gate firing on all cylinders against the defending AFC Champs, finding Doug Baldwin for a 48-yard gain on an early 3rd down, and then again hitting Baldwin in the end zone to cap off a stellar drive. New England than went about building a 13 point lead, which would’ve been much bigger if not for a third quarter interception by Richard Sherman or a fourth quarter pass in the end zone snagged by Earl Thomas. Russell Wilson calmly led his offense down the field and made a perfect back shoulder pass to Braylon Edwards on fourth down to come within one score. After the defense forced a punt, Wilson faked to Lynch, rolled out slightly to his right, and unloaded a pass almost 60 yards in the air to Sidney Rice, who had sprinted past Tavon Wilson for a 47-yard go-ahead touchdown. Tom Brady and the Patriots still had time to work with, but would lose yardage on their last gasp drive, ending up with a 15 yard gain to Wes Welker on 4th and 17. Both the rookie QB and the young defense played tremendous games, and it was a sign of things to come for the 12th Man.
Tumblr media
3. 2019 Week 5 against the Rams:
The NFC Champion Rams rolled into Seattle having won each of the previous three matchups, but on the night that late owner Paul Allen was inducted into the Ring of Honor, the Seahawks would have a bit of luck on their side. Russell Wilson played an absolutely perfect game, making absurd throws like the early TD in the back of the end zone to a toe-tapping Tyler Lockett where Wilson released the high-arcing pass while moving to his left. Sean Mcvay’s offense was able to move the ball with ease all night against Seattle, building a six point lead that they would keep for much of the second half, but the combined attack of Chris Carson rumbling on the ground and Russell Wilson’s passes whizzing through the night sky kept Seattle competitive throughout. Down by five with nine minutes left in the fourth, Seattle embarked on an epic seven minute drive, only for it to appear to stall near the goal line. Pete Carroll decided to play for the lead with two and a half minutes remaining, going for it on fourth down and goal from the five. Wilson took the shotgun snap and was immediately pressured from his left by two time reigning DPOY Aaron Donald, but was able to step up to his right and flip a pass to the near corner of the end zone where Chris Carson was wide open. Carson juggled the ball, sending millions of ‘Hawks fan’s hearts into their throats, but was able to hang on for the go-ahead score. After Seattle failed on the two point conversion, the much maligned safety Tedric Thompson made the play of his life to prevent a Jared Goff pass from hitting the ground in order to make an acrobatic interception. It ended up being all for naught, as Seattle couldn’t get the first down they needed to ice the game, and LA drive right down the field, thanks to a big pass over the middle to Gerald Everett. As Greg Zuerlin lines up for a 44-yard field goal attempt to win, it seemed that all hope was lost, but he missed it by just a couple of feet to the right, and Seattle pulled out the miraculous win to take a massive early advantage over their division rivals.
Tumblr media
2. 2012 Week 16 against the 49ers:
This was such an important game because it announced to the world that Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson’s Seahawks are a dominant force that we’re not to be messed with. On the night before Christmas Eve, the 49ers came into Seattle led by phenom QB Colin Kaepernick and Pete Carroll’s longtime rival head coach, John Harbaugh, needing just a win to clinch the division. Seattle just needed a win to clinch a wild card berth, and they had the early advantage off a Marshawn Lynch touchdown run just a minute and some change into the game. Later on in the first Lynch would score again, this time catching a pass off of a Texas route to put his squad up 14-zip. In the last minute of that eventful first quarter, Kaepernick found Vernon Davis on a red zone wheel route, but Davis was the victim of possibly the most vicious hit I’ve ever seen, delivered, of course, by Kam Chancellor. The hit prevented a TD, and the ensuing field goal attempt was blocked by big Red Bryant, scooped up by Richard Sherman, and returned for a TD, putting the ‘Hawks up 21-0. The game would never be close, Wilson would throw for three more scores, Sherman would pick Kaepernick off in the end zone, and Seattle brutalized the eventual NFC Champions 41-13, announcing to the world that they are not a team that should be taken lightly.
Tumblr media
1. 2016 Week 10 at New England:
Less than two years after the Patriots has ripped out their souls in Arizona, the Seahawks marched into Foxborough to play the best regular season game I’ve ever experienced. New England sauntered down the field with little resistance to score seven on the first drive of the night, but the rest of the game would be as intense as it gets. After two promising drives ended in field goals, Russell Wilson hit Doug Baldwin in the front left corner of the end zone to go up 12-7 (the extra point was blocked). The corner guarding Baldwin on the play was none other than Malcolm Butler, so this touchdown was an exorcism of sorts for Seattle, and it kickstarted a monster performance from Baldwin. After LeGarrette Blount pounder his way for his second score with a minute left until the half, Wilson led a lightning quick drive that culminated with a twirling pass across the field for Doug Baldwin’s second TD. LaGarrette Blount ran for his third TD midway through the third to give New England a two point edge, but a field goal set up by a 37 yard strike to Paul Richardson gave Seattle the lead yet again. The two powerhouses would trade field goals again, and the score was 25-24 Seattle when, as New England approached field goal range, Kam Chancellor ripped the ball out of the grasp of Julian Edelman. Richard Sherman recovered, and on third down from the fifteen, Russell Wilson made his best throw of the night. Recognizing a blitz with no deep safety, Wilson quickly laid a ball up off his back foot into the uber-reliable hands of Doug Baldwin for number 89’s third TD on the day. Pete Carroll aggressively went for two with the intention of making it a two possession game, but it didn’t work, and the greatest quarterback ever set out on an epic drive to try and tie the game up. Brady made a beautiful 34 yard pass to Edelman on third and ten, followed by a fade to Rob Gronkowski two plays later, setting New England up at the two yard line with a minute left. After a failed QB sneak on first down, Blount tried to dive over the pile on second down but was dragged down from behind by Kam Chancellor. On third down Belichick tried another QB sneak, but the snap was fumbled and Brady had to just fall on it. Fourth and goal, two yard line, fourteen seconds left. New England lines up in a jumbo package with Gronkowski out all the way to the left, covered by Kam Chancellor. The ball is snapped and Brady immediately floats a fade pass Gronk’s way, and the two most physically imposing players in the NFL are locked up in the end zone with the game on the line. Gronkowski extends his arms to try and push Chancellor down, but the Strong Safety stands his ground, and Gronk is forced to try and leap over Chancellor to make a play on the ball. He can’t, they both fall to the ground, and the ball falls harmlessly into the Gillette Stadium FieldTurf. Ballgame. A year and three quarters after Super Bowl 49, the Seahawks beat the eventual Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots in Foxborough, behind legendary performances from three Seattle legends: Number 3, number 89, and number 31.

Essay: The difficult humanity of Iggy Pop’s solo discography
Tumblr media
Most interviewers will talk about The Stooges, maybe touch on the Bowie years and leap to whatever album Iggy Pop is currently promoting. There’s a lot of history missing in between all that.
Iggy’s solo discography, from New Values to Après, is a lot to take in. It truly runs the gamut, from radio pleas to experimental fuck-offs.  I’ll try to provide nuance and context wherever possible as I go through each kind of Iggy record from this period. That said, it isn’t an easy body of work to assess.
Here comes success: Pop albums
Iggy’s attempts to fit into the mainstream are fascinating. New Values (1979) possibly had the the greatest chance to become a hit. It’s an album that does a fine job threading the needle of Iggy’s punk, avant-garde and pop sides. You don’t have to imagine too hard to see a song like “Tell Me a Story” getting radio play.
New Values also may be one of Iggy’s strongest solo albums. Songs like “New Values,” “I’m Bored” and “Five Foot One” are undeniable classics. There are few flaws to be found (I’ll get to that later).
There’s a genuine commitment to the material on Party (1981), but crossover mega-stardom proved to be  elusive. It may have been hard for audiences to forget this guy making radio moves was someone who, only a few years prior, was known for rolling on broken glass.
It’s a bummer because there’s more to Party than the cover would lead you to believe. It’s a solid 80s album with more lyrical depth than what you’d find on the radio in that era. No one could argue it’s his best, but you can definitely put it on and not skip a track.
I met you out at the Mardi Gras On a French Quarter sidewalk When you kissed me, it was strong I wonder if you'll hear this song
- “Pumpin’ for Jill” from Party
Iggy lets his crooning take center stage for the first time as well. It’s more fully developed on later albums like Preliminers or Avenue B, but it didn’t have far to go. His version of “Sea of Love” on Party is one of the best, falling just short of Cat Power’s cover.
Blah-Blah-Blah (1986) is just a well-executed 80s pop record, but you do get the nagging feeling it doesn’t feel as natural as other Iggy albums. The best songs are one’s like “Cry for Love” where he brings out his incredible goth-y croon to great affect. And it’s hard to hate a song like “Real Wild Child (Wild Child)” even if it is desperately clawing at the pop charts.
Solider is solid but doesn’t quite reach the heights of the focused, but flawed, New Values. “Take Care of Me” and “I Need More” are great, straight forward punk songs. “Mr. Dynamite” is one of his better stabs at incorporating pop and avant-garde. “Loco Mosquito” is a solid pop song that slips in punk lyrics. “Get Up and Get Out” is a rare feminist song that works perfectly in its simplicity.
I'm wondering fellas if you've heard the news The chicks are sick and tired of being abused Now I saw all this on the wide screen You know that chick Bette Davis split right out of the scene
- “Get Up and Get Out” from Soldier
“I’m a Conservative” is Iggy’s tongue-in-cheek lyricism firing on all cylinders. It’s placed next to “Dog Food” where Iggy thumbs his nose up at all the stereotypes people had hung on his shoulders up to that point, for better or worse.
Cold Metal: LOUD rock albums
Iggy has consistently said how boring big dumb rock albums are in interviews, especially Nu Metal. Yet at different points he still feels a need to put up a big ugly noise, while slipping in interesting lyrics, just to prove he can. This has meant different things at different points.
If you can get past the terrible hair metal-esque cover art and seriously flawed production, Instinct (1988) is actually kind of interesting. It pales next to the Stooges albums, but if you’re more partial to the rocking side of Iggy’s career you could do worse. Some highlights include “Easy Rider,” “Cold Metal,” “Strong Girl” and “High on You.”
The worst of these “rocking” albums, and possibly his worst album overall, might be Naughty Little Doggie (1996). It’s just sort of an embarrassing slog. The best songs (like “Knucklehead”) are passable and have a nice grinding blues-y thing going on. It sounds like the album a rocker would make to stay up to date with punks in the 90s.
Naughty Little Doggie also contains some repulsive and confessional lyrics, which I’ll get to later. It’s an understatement to say this thing is probably questionable to a lot of ears, but it is important.
American Caesar (1993) is interesting. It sounds like Iggy striking a good balance between rocking out and introspection. It’s also sort of a concept record.
“Jealousy” is a great acoustic song with simmering hatred just barely contained. There’s a great “Louie, Louie” cover that adds some political commentary. “Boogie Boy” is probably his best song making fun of big dumb rock music. There are standout songs, but the thing works best when you listen to the whole thing.
Now every mornin’ I wake up at nine I'm eating cheerios with red wine I'm reading that book but it's not too good Cuz my boogie head is made outta wood It's a fact i get so much joy When i can go out and be a boggie boy
- “Boogie Boy” from American Caesar
American Caesar is very long, with a runtime of over 70 minutes. You have to be in the mood for it and ready to hang in there for the whole thing.
As I revisited all of these albums I was shocked by how much I liked Beat ‘Em Up (2001). It’s extremely heavy and extremely funny. I made the mistake of reading reviews about it before I actually listened to it. It’s much more than a big dumb rock album.
A song like “Football” does a lot of things at once and somehow succeeds.  Iggy is able to make a song where he imagines himself as a football being thrown around sound oddly touching. “Mask” and “V.I.P.” are are some of his best rant-y songs in a long career of them.
Complicated crushed up disappointed squirming angry thrusting stabbing regretting starving greedy human alien being, struggling down the street, up the alley, in the elevator, through the party, to the office, in the bedroom, on your way to the morgue.
- “Mask” from Beat ‘Em Up
It’s also HEAVY. It may even be heavier than the Stooges records in some ways. Mooseman from Body Count joins his band, The Trolls, on the album to provide some great lowend (sadly it was his last album). I never thought I’d find myself getting into this album but it’s actually pretty fantastic, although a bit long.
It’s totally what The Weirdness should’ve been. With a bit of time I could see this being a bit of a cult classic. Plus it gave birth to this great performance.
Till wrong feels right: Famous collaborator albums
Brick by Brick (1990) is a well-constructed early 90s rock record and it sounds like it. It’s damn catchy, especially “Candy.” It features session pros and rock royalty from the time like Slash. It’s all executed well, but it’s not really something you’ll return to often.
One interesting song on Brick by Brick is “Butt City,” which is as goofy the title suggests but does slip in a some pretty good social commentary about racial profiling by police. This and “Mixing the Colors” from American Caesar explain Iggy’s views on race in a plain way, which was overdue.
The cops are well-groomed, with Muscled physiques in Butt Town Their tan uniforms are tailored in chic In Butt Town Any young black male who walks down the street Is going to get stopped by a car full of meat But the girl with the hair Flies by in her underwear
- “Butt Town” from Brick by Brick
Skull Ring (2003) is an album that is the epitome of hit or miss. Iggy brought in marquee punks like Green Day and Sum 41 and it actually kind of works. His Peaches collaborations on the album are fascinating but aren’t songs you’ll come back to often. Their best collaboration is a song called “Kick It” on the Peaches’ album Fatherfucker.
The bad songs with new collaborators are at least interesting. Strangely, songs with the newly reformed Stooges and previous backing band The Trolls are the ones that don’t jump out. There are a few gems like “Superbabe,” “Whatever” and “Dead Rockstar,” though.
King of the dogs: French albums
The French albums Iggy made are both stunners. They seem ridiculous on first blush but, once you get over your own preconceptions, they’re great.
Préliminaires (2009) has it’s roots in a Michel Houellebecq’s novel, New Orleans Jazz and bleak existentialism. “King of the Dogs” is such a perfectly suited cover for Iggy. “I Want to Go to the Beach” is a devastatingly minimal plea. “Party Time” is a goofy song with a very 80s propulsive bassline. I can’t say enough good things about this album.
Après (2012) is great in a lot of the same ways but is a more straight forward covers album. The selection is great. His version of Yoko Ono’s “Going Away Smiling” is perfect, though it’s hard to beat the original. There are also some great Serge Gainsbourg, Beatles and Cole Porter covers. This is definitely worth seeking out.
Buried in a melting coffin: Experimental albums
It’s been resurrected with the documentary Gimme Danger, but most don’t think about the Stooges being one of the first noise rock bands. This is apparent in some of their discography, but the very early version of the band (when they were called the Psychedelic Stooges) supposedly sounded like The Melvins. Iggy even played the vacuum during shows. There are no recordings from this period. This is all relayed by Iggy in many different interviews. He was also very closely associated with the Andy Warhol crew and drew from a variety of boundary pushing influences as a record store clerk in Ann Arbor. In his solo discography, this willingness to push boundaries comes out on occasion.
Zombie Birdhouse (1982) was recorded in Haiti, following Party. It’s a very difficult album to unpack, so I’ll do so carefully. Imagine Iggy made his version of David Bowie’s Lodger album, at least in terms of lyrical content. Most of the album revolves around the idea of an American in a place he doesn’t understand. It’s the most political thing he ever recorded.
The opener “Run Like a Villain” depicts America bombing its poorer adversaries. It’s a wonder that he rarely ever made songs like this since it’s so effective. For example:
Big Dick is a thumbs-up guy He shot a missile in the sky It functioned just as advertised Until the fire made him cry
“Run Like a Villain Zombie Birdhouse
“The Villagers” is a bit hard to take but it fits the tourist theme of the album. “Watching the News” is a super experimental song about Iggy doing just that in a very uncomfortable, but effective way. “Ordinary Bummer” and “Platonic” are solid ballads. The best songs are the uptempo “Eat or Be Eaten” and “The Horse Song.” The ladder has these crazy drone-y parts that are molded into something insanely catchy. I’d submit it as one of the best songs he’s ever done.
This is such a vastly underrated album that was sadly undercut a bit by the production at the time. That’s since been improved on the remastered version, which I can’t recommend enough.
Avenue B (1999) is very reflective. It’s jazzy and slower moving than most of his discography. My guess is that his new album, Free, is going to be very similar to this based on the songs that have been released so far. That’s a good thing.
Collaborators like John Medeski provide a great foundation for Iggy’s lyrics to be on full display. Everything from acoustic guitars to bongos crop up, creating a subdued and gentle springboard to dive off.
You can tell Avenue B was an album he wanted to make for a long time. It explores a lot of difficult things. From being in love with fascist to the problems of a relationship with a much younger woman.
This is a course corrective from Naughty Little Doggie, picking up where “Look Away” left off. It’s the beginning of Iggy becoming a bit more accountable for his past. There are still some cringe-y moments, especially on the otherwise great “I Felt the Luxury,” that don’t age well. But, on the whole, it’s honest and the start of a new chapter.
(Don’t) look away: Contradictions and skeletons
You don’t have to look hard through Iggy’s solo discography to find "problematic” lyrics. The messages aren’t always handled well but they’re more honest than anything you’ll find on a typical rock record. That’s an important distinction.
Confessions
There’s a sense of willful forgetfulness rock fans have about teenage groupies. Every now and again I’ll hear a movie like Almost Famous called “dated,” even though that’s totally what happened at the time. While many thinkpieces point to the fact that there were laws in place that made this illegal at the time, they totally miss the point about public perception on this issue. Just because there is a law on the books doesn’t mean people will care or follow it. This wasn’t just a rock star problem, even if it’s easier to tell ourselves that.
Pretty much every rock icon you can name from the 80s and earlier has this skeleton in their closet. Iggy is no different in this regard.
The difference maybe is honesty. “Look Away,” from the album Naughty Little Doggie, is a very unpleasant but real song. It doesn’t romanticize the power imbalance and lays it out simply in the first line.
The song discusses Iggy’s relationship with Sable Starr and her subsequent doomed relationship with Johnny Thunders. You’re not going to hear a confession like that on an album by Jimmy Page or the Eagles, even though they have more reason to clench up about the topic. Honesty doesn’t make it easy, though. In Iggy’s own words in the song “What we did once, I wouldn't do again.” Hopefully that’s true.
I don’t excuse any of this, it’s terrible. Especially on an album with a creepy, leering song like “Pussy Walk.” Naughty Little Doggie is a difficult album to sort  out. Yet it does lay bare all the downsides of the glam lifestyle (which in many ways he was a part of) and abandons any mythologizing about it. I do think we can discuss these things and learn from them, but I would never recommend anyone buy this record. If you want a reason to not listen further, this is it.
The flip side is that Iggy has been an ardent supporter of feminist art throughout his career and obviously didn’t see creeping on teen girls as a contradiction. He should’ve known better and been held accountable, along with scores of other artists from his era. We know better now.
It seems he does too and has been working to change this prior to the metoo era and has never tried to act like something he’s not. In recent years he has made a tangible efforts to correct these past mistakes, which I don’t see other artists from his era doing. He has recently raised money for the Girls Rock Camp Alliance charity. He’s championed independent female artists like U.S. Girls, Pins, Le Butcherttes, Noveller and countless others. Small steps, but steps nonetheless.
Race
On the whole Iggy been way ahead of the curve on race politics, but has one awfully ignorant song on his album New Values. His views are made a bit clearer on American Caesar and Brick by Brick, but this is still something worth discussing.
In pretty much every interview he’s given he’s made sure to promote the black music that gave birth to rock and roll. Early in his career he backed black musicians as a drummer and has collaborated with them throughout his career. He drew influence from traditions that weren’t his own and made something totally unique. He didn’t steal from other cultures. That’s far ahead of the time.
What isn’t is a song like “African Man” which was either intended to be edgy or goofy, but just ends up being kind of racist. There’s no way around that. It’s just a terrible song that ruins the near perfect New Values. It’s a fucking bummer it was ever recorded and I sincerely hope it doesn’t give someone the idea that it’s funny to say something like that.
I would chalk this up to ignorance that a good deal of white people had at the time. Movies and cartoons depicted Africans as savages and cannibals. I think this is what he was trying to replicate and possibly parody. For someone who supposedly had an interest in social anthropology early in life, I’m surprised he would utilize a stereotype that blatant. This makes me personally think it was supposed to be a parody. There comes a point where none of that matters, though. It sadly ends up giving comfort to those who hold backwards views on race.
I’d love to actually know his thoughts on this stuff, but no one actually asks about it in interviews. It’s frustrating because it’s an issue he gets right more often than not. It’s better to confront these things than to pretend they don’t exist. I think that’s the only way forward.
There is one moment where he does apologize for accidentally using a dated term in a past interview. Maybe that’s a good indication of how he feels today.
Break into your heart: Conclusions
It’s hard to write objectively about an artist who means a lot to you. I tried for years to figure out a way to do this coherently (it probably didn’t end up working). I saw a few OK lists spring up dissecting some of these albums, but they always seemed to just graze the surface. There was always something lacking.
They missed the honesty and humanity on display through a long and complicated career. They would mythologize the usual parts. They would gloss over the difficult parts. They would diminish the efforts for something better.
To me Iggy was a catalyst that didn’t just birth a movement for disengaged youths to stick safety pins through their noses. It was much more than that. He opened a door for marginalized people to scream about the oppression they face daily. He promoted difficult and confrontational art. He is a mirror for America’s best and worst impulses.
For me, and many others, his life represents a struggle to survive and keep getting better. He’s survived bad reviews, severe drug addiction, divorces and a host of other things. There’s something so powerful to that simple notion of getting back up after falling hard that many times. I think that’s why, despite his flaws, people still care.
It’s been difficult to grapple with some of the regrettable parts of his discography. I think everyone is doing that now with their record collections in some way. There are no easy answers. It really comes down to how you want to engage with art and commerce. I’m not going to preach to you or tell you how you should interact with art. Iggy Pop is a lot of things, but above all else he is transparent. I can live with that.
After some deserved success and recognition with Post Pop Depression, he’s ready to step out on a limb with his new album Free. I can’t wait to hear it.

I hope the next ten songs help to ensure the diversity of this year’s list, but lord knows there’s even more to come.  This chunk is home to indie folk, hip hop/R&B, Icelandic rock (with a distinctly American sound), and several electro-pop tracks.  I hope the 20 tracks you’ve seen at this point continue to confound and delight, with plenty of new songs you’ve never had the opportunity to hear.
40. Honeysuckle – “It’s Getting Late”
Boston produces yet another independent folk group – this one a trio, with outstanding three-part harmonies to boot. Comprised of Holly McGarry, Benjamin Burns, and Chris Bloniarz, Honeysuckle performed at Newport Folk Festival in 2015 and continues to tour New England in support of other folk acts.  This track specifically grabs you straight from the start with the warm banjo; the charm offensive continues with multiple instances of highlighting the harmonies, instrumentation, and arrangement, with lyrics focusing on the nature of time and change.   Their profile continues to grow with attention from NPR, among other publications, so keep your ears open for future success.
39. Tep No – “Me and My Guitar”
Not much is known about producer Tep No besides the fact that he briefly sought an acting career in LA before moving back to his native Canada.  Now based in Toronto, his music typically blends several genres, utilizing electronic sounds with pop sensibilities and fusing melodies with otherworldly synth beats. The vocals on this track are practically spoken word, delivered over a swirling mix of looped chants, samples, and – you guessed it – guitar.  The result is an outstanding choice for any low-key summer mix you have planned for a few months from now.  This song is so great, it wouldn’t be out of place on a new season of The OC; those of you who know me personally realize the weight of that statement.
38. Hayley Kiyoko – “Gravel to Tempo”
I almost feel embarrassed to love this song as much as I do, and initially placed it higher on the list before finding stronger tracks.  I had never heard of Hayley Kiyoko before this song, but it turns out she has a DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie for those of you past puberty), CSI spin off, and ABC Family Freeform show under her belt already.  The Japanese-American actress and singer dropped this gem in late summer, with slick production that doesn’t feel heavy handed.  The track utilizes more electro-pop sounds with Kiyoko’s breathy vocals to highlight the insecurity everyone feels at different points in their lives.  She channels teenage angst in a way that feels validating; a standout line being “I thought I was depressed/But I think I just needed to cry.”  Regardless of how other people talk about her, Kiyoko is determined to do things her way, sporting a middle finger to the world. Given the grief we all faced in 2016, it was a message that felt particularly appropriate.
37. Brian Fallon – “Nobody Wins”
The Gaslight Anthem’s lead vocalist decided to work on a solo album during a recent hiatus from the band.  This classic return to American anthems shows his time off was time well spent.  His signature raspy vocals carry a buoyant and bouncing song with a surprisingly dark subject of acceptance after death. The guitar strums and steady backing rhythm sound straight out of a John Cougar Mellencamp album in the 80s, complete with the unexpected lyrical content.  What shouldn’t be surprising after listening to the track is that he recorded it in Nashville with the help of producer Butch Walker, who co-wrote the song and also played guitar for the entire album.  This song is a welcome blast from the past from an artist who hopefully has a bright future.
36. Ben Abraham – “I Belong to You”
"I Belong to You” is a love song for the ages from Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Ben Abraham.  There is something absurdly charming about the fact that his Australian accent is front and center in his singing voice, which CMJ described as “delicate yet booming.”  His parents are Indonesian folk stars, which may have influenced his own style, integrating harmonies and poignant arrangements.  “I Belong to You” is yet another song that makes it difficult to listen along without tapping your foot, incorporating a lilting guitar, a xylophone, and even hand snaps to woo the audience.  It certainly doesn’t hurt that this wonder from Down Under is rakishly handsome.  There’s little not to like here, as this burst of sunshine will leave you smiling all day.
35. Solange feat. Q-Tip – “Borderline (An Ode to Self-Care)”
A Seat at the Table is an outstanding album from a consistently strong artist who just so happens to be sisters with Beyoncé.  Her song “Losing You” placed fourth on my list for 2012, and while “Borderline” doesn’t quite match that track, it’s still incredible in its own right.  Solange makes allusions to Aaliyah and A Tribe Called Quest, with Q-Tip working multiple levels of production.  The song itself is an interpolation of “Electric Relaxation,” a gem from the group back in 1993.  Aaliyah comes through when Solange references the 2001 hit “More Than a Woman” near the end of the song.  “Borderline,” though, is so much more than its musical references; it’s a track that directly addresses police brutality against black Americans.  The political track reminds its listeners that it’s okay to temporarily ignore the violence in an attempt to stay sane.  As Solange told W magazine, “To be able to get up and tell my child to have a wonderful day and know that he’ll be protected and nurtured and loved and treated like an equal contributor to society, I sometimes have to choose to not look.”
34. Kaleo – “Way Down We Go”
Icelandic rock band Kaleo has been bubbling under since 2012, but finally achieved moderate success with “Way Down We Go” in 2016.   It’s been used on myriad television shows, and most recently popped up in trailers for The Good Fight and Logan.  The four members of the band grew up in Mosfellsbær, near Reykjavík, but are now based in Austin. The blend of blues and rock are a strong production choice, with hard-hitting drums, strong guitars, ubiquitous reverb, and haunting looped vocals all working to make the song one you can’t forget.   The chorus alone will be stuck in your head for days, making this a solid choice for playlists in the year to come.
33. Chance the Rapper – “Blessings”
Chance had a huge year, breaking out into the mainstream to unprecedented success - especially without a label - in no small part due to his legendary verse on Kanye’s “Ultralight Beams.”  It’s fitting then, that the arguable highlight of his Grammy-nominated (and history making) mixtape.  As an avowed atheist, I can contend you don’t need to feel particularly pious to enjoy the conviction of Chance and vocalist Jamila Woods, who has collaborated with him in the past. Pitchfork agreed, noting it as "one of the strongest rap albums released this year, an uplifting mix of spiritual and grounded that even an atheist can catch the Spirit to.”  The keyboard is strong throughout, invoking a soulful church service only augmented by the improvisations from Donnie Trumpet.  The laid-back vibe of the track seems to personify Chance’s illustrious grin, with the end product more a profession of faith than a prayer.
32. The Head and the Heart – “All We Ever Knew”
With every album this sextet releases, one can note an upward trend of rising confidence. The group originally formed in Seattle, but the bulk of this album was written in Los Angeles - Montecito Heights, to be specific.  Previous albums had the group compared to the Avett Brothers and Fleet Foxes, but the production on their third signaled a clear direction change, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros wouldn’t be completely off base as a point of reference.  However, this song is in its own world for the band in regards to its success, topping two separate alternative charts on Billboard.  Starting with a simple vocal and piano, the song builds to an explosion of noise within the first fifty seconds.  The consistent build of instrumentation and playful tone are such a joy to hear. They’re truly firing on all cylinders at this point, and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us next.
31. Banks – “Trainwreck”
Here’s a thought guys – respect the women in your life.  I’d hate to be on the other end of a song like “Trainwreck,” apparently penned as a kiss-off by Banks to “a guy I never wanted to kiss.”  The doom-filled beats and almost trap texture on display here is a newer sound for Banks, who previously appeared on my 2014 list. Taylor Swift doesn’t have shit on her lyrics, though, with lines like “It’s quite depressing, there is no fixing to the problem when you’re talking to an idiot,” and a chorus that simply repeats “I had to get away” over and over again.  The entire aesthetic here is glamour noir, leaning into the darkness without ever sacrificing an ounce of the snarly pop that’s become her signature sound.  “Trainwreck” is a clear standout from the year, and a rare track that would find itself at home on a workout playlist just as easily as a compilation for Halloween.

From Tim Burton’s iconic Batman to the baseball-bat swinging Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, DC Comics superheroes and their villainous counterparts have been lighting up the box office since the 50s. With the launch of the M-Net Movies DC Heroes pop-up channel for DStv Premium subscribers, which is also available to stream on DStv Now, we’ve ranked every live-action DC comic movie ever!*
30. Stamp Day for Superman (1954)
Superman takes time from fighting crime to promote war stamps, used to fund the fight against the Axis powers of World War II. So it’s not the worst movie on this list, but it’s not actually a movie either - just something designed to be shown in cinemas.
29. The Return of Swamp Thing (1989)
This movie had about as much budget as the Joker has sanity. With that in mind, it does a respectable job. But only with that in mind - otherwise, this is just an awful low-budget monstrosity.
28. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Everyone had lost interest in making another Superman. But they were contracted to make one, so we got a fourth movie starring the man of steel. Its most memorable moment is how bad the special effects of the finale are. Yikes.
27. Catwoman (2004)
The first Batman character to get their own movie (other than Bats), there was a lot of hope for Catwoman’s maiden outing. Alas, very little is right here. It opted to invent its own story for the character, but just made a mess of everything. Not even Halle Berry could save it.
26. Batman & Robin (1997)
This movie shouldn’t be ranked so low. It’s funny and has some entertaining villains. But you know what? The entire thing was motivated to sell action figures. Seriously. Even the director apologised for it.
25. Steel (1997)
Back in 1997 nobody wanted to make comic book movies, not unless it was Batman. Steel, already a B-list DC character, got a low-budget straight-to-video movie. It doesn’t help that Shaq, who plays Steel, is not as good at acting as he is at basketball…
Download the DStv Now app from the Android or iOS.
24. Jonah Hex (2010)
If comic book movies teach us anything, it’s that actors should stick to the genre. It worked for Ryan Reynolds, Chris Evans and Ben Affleck. Ditto for Josh Brolin, who has portrayed three comic book characters. But even though he was a cool Jonah Hex, the movie not so much…
23. Green Lantern (2011)
Some comic characters are relatively simple and easy to put into a movie. Green Lantern is not, yet this movie wanted to make things even more confusing. Even Ryan Reynolds started making fun of it in his other films.
22. Superman and the Mole Men (1951)
It’s the 1950s, things are still in black and white, and Superman has the time to work out squabbles between frightened small-town people and underground creatures with big eyebrows. Most memorable as the first Superman movie and perhaps the first-ever true superhero movie.
21. Batman: The Movie (1966)
Back in its day, this was a big hit. But it’s really a case of “you had to be there”. Shot after the success of Season 1 of Adam West’s Batman, it’s a whole movie of WHAM! BANG! POW! and 60s pin-up girls gyrating with the dark knight to surf music. No, we’re not making any of this up.
20. Superman III (1983)
Superman III would have been forgotten today, were it not for three things: the Superman vs Superman fight, Richard Pryor’s non-stop jokes, and that scary android woman created by Lex Luthor’s supercomputer. Oh, and Superman dumping a frozen lake on a chemical fire. Ah, the 80s.
19. Supergirl (1984)
Superman’s cousin comes to Earth to retrieve a powerful artefact, while a wannabe witch uses it to amplify her powers. The result is a weird tale that stumbles and jumps through plot holes, but it’s still entertaining. Fun fact: Supergirl actress Helen Slater later played Superman’s biological mom in Smallville.
18. Suicide Squad (2016)
It is overstuffed, convoluted and had some nondescript bad guys that nobody can remember. Too much icing on too little cake. On the other hand, the main cast of characters are really cool and the soundtrack rocked, so it has a place in some fans’ hearts.

17. Swamp Thing (1982)
It’s the DC movie you’ve never heard of - and the DC character you’ve never heard of. This quirky comedy would have been lost to time, were it not a campy cult masterpiece directed by Wes Craven long before he created Freddy Krueger.
16. Batman Returns (1992)
Tim Burton’s second Batman film is a little overproduced and lacks that raw shine of the original. But Michelle Pfeiffer is still the best Catwoman to appear in a movie and Danny DeVito is the perfect Penguin. Yet leave it to Christopher Walken to play a villain with no mask and no powers, yet still be the meanest thing in Gotham.
15. Batman Forever (1995)
Joel Schumacher’s first go at the Batman world is a clear hat-tip to the 60s era of the character. It was more fun and camp, and who doesn’t like George Clooney’s smirking Bruce Wayne, or Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones as Riddler and Two-Face? But it was a little too much at times...
14. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
The hopes were really high for this film and it was never going to please everyone. Lex Luthor’s inane and complicated plan sucks a lot of wind from its sails. On the other hand, the Batman combat scene not only saves the movie but shows why Ben Affleck is great as the character.
13. Watchmen (2009)
There are very few graphic novels more revered and complex than this epic - and director Zack Snyder tries to fit every bit of it into his film. Yet even after cutting a major sub-plot, Watchmen is still a long and dense experience. It’s got its fans, but like the comic, is the antithesis of superheroes. That’s not for everyone.
12. Justice League (2017)
Justice League isn’t perfect and its biggest problem is an overly generic bad guy that nobody cares to remember. But the team works well together, the fight with Superman is epic, Jason Momoa was born to play Aquaman, and we definitely want to see more of The Flash.
11. Superman II (1980)
The sequel to the original Superman movie was mired with problems, from losing its director and design consultant to being filmed right on the heels of the first film. But it holds up well, not least because Terence Stamp’s General Zod gives us every reason to remember why we need superheroes.
10. Superman Returns (2006)
Lex Luthor proves why he is as dangerous as any villain with superpowers, while the darker tone helps create a Superman persona that fits better with the 21st Century.
9. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
It gets a little tiring to hear how old and beaten Batman is and maybe Tom Hardy’s Bane does too good a job, overshadowing just about every other character in this movie. But as a conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, this was a classy send-off for Gotham’s saviour.
8. Man of Steel (2013)
Not only do we finally, after many years, get a new Superman movie, but some inspired genius casts Michael Shannon as the evil General Zod. It’s been too long and we’re happy Krypton’s son is back!
7. Constantine (2005)
At the time it was not a hit. But the first movie adaptation of the Hellblazer comics has since gathered a big cult following. Today it can claim a lot of fans because it’s actually really good. Hey, Keanu, where’s our sequel?
6. Batman Begins (2005)
Since 1989’s Batman, there have been other superhero movies that made their mark on the genre. Then Christopher Nolan shows up, hires Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, and turns comic book movies into crime thrillers. Brilliant.
5. Wonder Woman (2017)
A slightly weak third act doesn’t hurt the appeal of the Amazonian superhero in her first major movie outing. Let’s face it - nobody is panicking anymore about what might happen to Superman. Wonder Woman can take care of things.
4. Superman (1978)
There had been a few superhero movies before 1978’s Superman. But this set the stage: big effects, great hero, amazing soundtrack - and Gene Hackman deserves more credit for his mean Lex Luthor.
3. Batman (1989)
Tim Burton unleashes his quirky style in grand form, creating the superhero movie that still influences the genre today. Then there’s Jack Nicholson’s Joker, Michael Keaton’s dry wit and the original soundtrack by Prince. Enough said!
2. V for Vendetta (2005)
This dark tale of a near future under a totalitarian state is already a gritty and powerful movie. But Hugo Weaving as the antihero V just takes it to another level. On top of that, this is an experience with real purpose and a serious message underneath. Remember, remember, the fifth of November...
1. The Dark Knight (2008)
Why so serious? Heath Ledger’s Joker is just entirely in his own league. And not just him - everything in this movie fires on all cylinders. The greatest DC movie? No. This is the greatest comic book movie in history.

Should I consider getting health insurance??
I am 22 and have no health insurance. I am a pretty healthy person and don't have to see the doctor often. I just think it's a waist of money to get health insurance unless it's for accidents or something like that because in order to get an affordable monthly premium then your deductible is going to be high. I may never reach the deductible, but still have to pay the premium. So should I just pay out of pocket when I do need to go to the doctor and just consider getting a high deductible plan or should I just go ahead and pay a higher monthly premium for a lower deductible. Flipping Cars - Insurance?
A few friends and I are looking into flipping cars while we're in college to make a little extra money. I'm not sure where to turn as far as insurance goes. We're not driving the vehicles ourselves - just parking them until they sell. What kind of coverage would we need and where can we find the best rates for our situation? We would only drive it from the auction house and with potential buyers on test drives. Thanks for the help!

Health insurance for a married couple.?
My wife and I haven't had insurance since we graduated college this past winter and moved to California. We are now waiting for me to start dental school in the fall and I am working at a company in California with no benefits. We have one child who is covered and thus doesn't need to coverage. So we are looking to find insurance from now until mid August (about 5 months). Do we need to get short term insurance? What should we expect to pay for the two of us? Should/can we get covered individually? Any companies that you suggest? We would be more interested in low premium high deductible.

Why are my quotes for car insurance so expensive?
I understand that being 17 means my car insurance is going to be a lot. I've had friends that have said their insurance is 800 for more powerful cars that what I have been getting quotes on. I've looked at the cheapest cars to insure, Peugeot 106's, Fiat Punto's etc with minuscule engines. But I'm still getting quotes for 3000 to 4000, which I can't afford. I wouldn't be so bothered if I lived somewhere where buses ran and other good transport connections, but not having a car isn't really an option for me. Has anybody got any tips on lowering my car insurance? My parents won't let me go on their insurnace for legal reasons, being that if I do crash I could get in a lotta lotta trouble aha. I just don't understand why my insurance more than triples friends quotes of the same age and same cars. thanks""

""Oh crap, what am I going to do? Car insurance?""
This might be long but PLEASE READ EVERYTHING. When I was 15 my grandfather (Legally my father, always lived with him) had always promised me he would get me driver's ed but he never did. A few months before I was 18 I moved out and in an apartment with my fiance. My fiance went to college 5 hours away the day after my 18th. After I turned 18 (July 25) I wanted to get my license, and I know how to do it. My fiance came back from college last weekend and took me to buy a used car for 400. Its a beater, but it drives. It has no insurance and no license plates. Im caught in a super circle. I cant get to SOS or DMV to even apply for my permit without 1) a ride and 2) insurance. I cant get plates to even drive it illegally without a license. I cant get insurance because, from what Im figuring out, just about no body will insure someone without a license. My grandfather will -not- put me on his insurance to save our lives and I need a car to get back and forth to work. (Walking 5 miles? Nah...) What am I supposed to do???? I cant pay a whole lot for insurance as Im now living alone in an apartment on a crappy salary. I had a decent salary until my work decided to super hire and how we are severely over staffed... What to do!?""
