I like when books have Maps and Charts in them and I think that all books should have such things.
and books which already have them? I think they should have More Maps and Charts.

Fic Writer Questions!
tagged by @palamedessextus !!! thank u i love to procrastinate on writing by writing about writing
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
110 on my main account (+ 4 on my sneaky sock for Crimes™ lol)
2) What’s your total AO3 word count?
614,551 on my main account which is. hm. a lot
3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
obvi the main ones are the terror (50 fics) and good omens (35 fics). beyond that: TMA, the OA, doctor who, LOST, red dwarf, what we do in the shadows, the aubreyad, legends of tomorrow, banished, MCU, bbc ghosts, jeeves & wooster, russian doll, true detective, twin peaks, fleabag, & it's always sunny.
so technically 19, but wow a LOT of those are because i am a fiend for crossovers. (true detective x red dwarf... twin peaks x hannibal... the OA x lost.... russian doll x doctor who...) and many of the others were one-offs for yuletide. i'm pretty monofannish when it comes to writing!
4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
lol they're all going to be for good omens... let's see
1. "it's a new craze" - the podcast fic. imho this fic is the definition of "The Claw," a.k.a. the phenomenon that sees some fics plucked out from the fray to become super popular. i'm not denying that it's good! i still think it's pretty clever! but its popularity was probably as much a function of timing as of quality
2. "what a way to make a living" - the uber driver fic. honestly still pretty proud of this one, it flows well and is structurally interesting and genuinely very funny and the perfect length. i had a blast in good omens fandom writing comedic fic, this one
3. "dearly departed" - another one i'm still very happy with. my first ever finished multi-chapter fic & the story that proved to me i could sustain a plot and original characters and also that people would actually enjoy it. so a pretty big deal!
4. "blame it on my juice, baby!" - the fake love potion one. i wrote this fic while delirious with horrible fever cooped up in a tiny council flat airbnb bedroom in london. i think it's still pretty strong although since writing it i've developed a severe aversion to the "meddling friend engineers a get-together" trope in fic & so cringe a bit when i read it back, lmao
5. "greatest hits" - the one with the original songs! the songs are still good.... the fic is ehhhhhhh i guess.
5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
i don't respond to comments on most of my gomens fic anymore because 🤷‍♀️ but i do try to reply to everything i get on my terror fic/smaller fandom stories! my replies are usually very lame but i do like to take the time to thank people for reading.
6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
i usually don't write angsty endings because i'm a weenie BUT the one exception is probably my terror/TMA crossover which cannot be said to end well by any means lol
7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
dearly departed has a very lovely ending... i will also plug my OA fic heat rises which is GREAT and has a GREAT ending and nobody read it because nobody watched the OA. i'm fine it's fine
8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
as mentioned above, yes, compulsively... award for craziest simply has to go to It's Always Sunny In Another Dimension which is, yes, an IASIP x OA crossover. i apologize for nothing
9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
not that i can recall, [bubbe voice] tenks gad!!!
10) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
i do i do.... when i first picked up fic writing again after college i thought smut would forever totally beyond me but after some very kind encouragement from friends i tried my hand at it & was off to the races.
i would not say i am an expert at it by any means but i have a lot of fun with it, & people seem to generally appreciate it, so i will keep going!
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
also no, phew
12) Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, a bunch of my gomens fics have been translated into chinese and russian, which is so so super cool!
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
yuh, i had a few legendary cowrites in GO! the slow show metafic with cherry @fremulon and the shitscript crossover extravaganza with hallie @kalelraejepsen !!! both tremendously fun experiences
14) What’s your all time favorite ship?
that is a very tough one. if you go by my ao3 bookmarks it's aziraphale/crowley, which might be true still tbh... but i dunno. maybe ten/rose because that shit never leaves you.
15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
in terms of fic i already started posting, there's my one terror WIP with amnesiac tozer that i swear i WILL finish one day... and same goes for my good omens music & lyrics AU, which i fully expect to pick back up and finish off when i inevitably return to the fandom for series 2.
as far as stuff that never made it out of drafts, i started a hodgson-centric fic a few weeks ago that i got like 4k into before realizing i need to seriously refine my approach. so hopefully after exe fest i will get around to that!
16) What are your writing strengths?
well i am funny. so i've got that going for me. other than that ummmm i don't know. i don't think of myself as a particularly good or strong writer bc i really am just here for a laff. i think i can turn a phrase well and get the most out of imagery; i'm good at coming up with compelling story concepts and weird gimmicks, i guess?
17) What are your writing weaknesses?
i fundamentally don't know or understand how People Actually Act And Feel so i have a hard time getting realistic or interesting reactions and conflicts out of characters. my plots (when my stories have them at all) are very powered by external events, i wouldn't call myself a character-driven writer by any means. for the same reasons i struggle with voice and dialogue beyond superficial signposting via vocabulary/syntax. also, sustaining a long story/finding enough Stuff To Happen to fill it up/having the patience to keep writing... is something i need to work on for sure.
18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
i'm a lame american who only speaks english so honestly i don't really have thoughts!
19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?
i distinctly remember hand-writing in my notebook two or three pages worth of a story about what happened to the main precog in "minority report" after watching the movie when i was like seven. the first fandom i actually wrote fic for and posted it online was probably doctor who circa 2010 ish? but my warrior cats RP career predates that by a few years and i did a LOT of writing there. oh warriorsforest39 dot proboards dot com you are missed....
20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
SEX GHOST AU! SEX GHOST AU!
tagging folks :))) @laissezferre @titleleaf @theburialofstrawberries @girdedheraround @flanneryoconnorfanfiction @wreathedwith if u want!!

I was tagged by @kcrabb88- thank you so much friend!
1) how many works do you have on AO3?
100
2) what’s your total AO3 word count?
350,714
3) how many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
I’ve written for 31 fandoms (mostly single one shots), but the fandoms at the top of my list are Outlander, The Terror (2018), BBC Poldark, Sharpe Series, Les Miserables and Rivers of London
4) what are your top five fics by kudos?
A Daughter Lost, A Father Found- a retelling of Outlander Book 3 ‘Voyager’ considering if Brianna had gone through the stones to find Jamie instead of Claire.
Vergangenheit- My Outlander WWII AU epic saga that traces Jamie (a captain in the 51st Highlanders Division) return from a POW camp and the ways in which he and his children grow and develop in post-war Scotland.
Someone To Die For- A Pride and Prejudice and Zombies one shot in which Fitzwilliam and Lizzie are separated in the chaos of the final battle and come to a realisation that they love each other- aw.
An Endless Night- The prequel to Vergangenheit- a epistolary fic charting a set of letters between Captain Jamie Fraser of the 51st Highlanders Division and his family during his internment in German POW camps.
Resurgam- A missing moment from Outlander Book 6 ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes’ where Jamie is comforted by Brianna.
5) do you respond to comments? why or why not?
I do and I love doing it! I love trying to explain why I’ve made a particular choice, or trying to flesh out a character’s backstory. It’s also lovely to create a conversation with readers and build a writers’ and readers’ community.
6) what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
After The Battle (a missing moment from Book 8 of the Aubreyad) ends on a  pretty angsty note, as does Facing the Ghosts- my Barricade Day fic from 2017 with all of the dead amis appearing to Marius and Cosette.
7) do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I don’t write crossovers!
8) have you ever received hate on a fic?
I think I got hate (or more of a why have you made character x survive and that how dare I not comply to certain parts of that fandom’s collectively hate for said character for some reason) on A Daughter Lost, A Father Found, but otherwise everyone’s been lovely!
9) do you write smut? if so what kind?
I don’t write explicit smut and I don't intend to. It’s either fade to black or the scene starts afterwards.
10) have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge!
11) have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but I would love to. If any translators want to translate my fic, please get in touch!
12) have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not officially, but I have had friends who have beta- read for me, and @pudentilla has been the most amazing sound board/inspiration for some things to do with my most recent WIP Known To Those You Love, so I think she deserves a writing credit, or will do when it’s finished!
13) what’s your all-time favourite ship?
Romantic would be John Bridgens/Henry Peglar from The Terror, platonic would be the triumvirate of Enjolras, Combeferre and Courfeyrac from Les Miserables.
14) what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I have a WIP on fanfic.net titled Out of the Darkness which was a canon era partially survival au for Les Miserables (my first chaptered fic!) that I highly doubt I’ll ever finish now.
15) what are your writing strengths?
Creating backgrounds and strong atmospheres of places. I love grounding characters in a set place and developing their surroundings so they’re not just in a black box in my head.
16) what are your writing weaknesses?
Blocking. Getting characters to move. I’m great with getting in their heads and exploring all of their inner thoughts and questions and turmoil and love etc, but getting them from point a to point b? Agh! Save me!
17) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I’m a fan, but it needs to be done well and not be glaring. I did it with my Outlander stuff with Gaelic because it’s such a big part of the canon.
18) what was the first fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter. Definitely.
19) what’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
I don’t know!! That’s really hard! I’m loving writing Known To Those You Love and I loved writing Vergangenheit because that’s when I really came into myself as a long fic author and got to grips with consistent deep dives into research, plotting and planning as I went along. I also got to write a love letter to Scotland whilst living in Yorkshire, so that was a bonus!  I also loved writing On Loving A Wounded Boy, because I got to give Ben Perkins a happy ending (he doesn’t die in this and had the chance to flesh out Miranda, who is barely a character in the film that she appears in at all.) So probably a toss up between those three if I really had to choose.
I will no pressure tag: @pudentilla, @silvermagpies, @boilyerheid and anyone else who wants to have a go!

Do you know of any books that are about life at sea in Nelson's Navy? I know there's Nelson's Navy: The Ships, Men, and Organization 1793-1815, and Feeding Nelson's Navy. What about homosexuality at sea? The only thing I've been able to find is Boys At Sea: Sodomy, Indecency, and Courts Martial in Nelson's Navy. Are there any books about songs sung by the Navy? I've only ever heard of one book covering songs from the time, Napoleon and British Song, 1797-1822.
what’s that? an ask from three hundred years ago?
here’s the answer I typed out whenever it was, which may or may not be correct; i have a sneaking sense that i disagreed with myself on some minor point here, or got the name of something wrong, or i would have posted it by now: but then perhaps i was just experiencing a minor episode. I imagine the original asker is long gone to better things, but for the record:
Life at sea is probably the easiest of these to answer! There are three things that come immediately to mind, other than the Lavery book you mention: the first is Roy and Leslie Adkins’ Jack Tar (Abacus: London, 2008) which is an excellent, easy-reading account of the everyday life of seamen in Nelson’s navy. The second is Shipboard Life and Organisation, 1715-1815 (NRS/Ashgate, 1998), effectively a sourcebook collecting contemporary accounts, and the third is Rodger’s The Wooden World (Collins, 1986) which has a good chapter on shipboard life. (2018 note: If you’re interested in the social dynamics of ships, Evan Wilson’s A Social History of British Naval Officers [Boydell & Brewer, 2017] is very good if a bit dry.) I also have fond memories of Dudley Pope’s Life in Nelson’s Navy, which is super readable but I seem to remember being a little casual with…facts?
songs
I’m assuming you’re looking for information about forebitters, here, and I’m not sure I know of a book specifically about Napoleonic focsle songs? (This is not really my field i must stress!) I would expect them to reflect contemporary popular music in the general sense, on which the aforementioned Napoleon and British Song is probably the most obvious source (I assume you know about the companion Soundcloud account); probably some of the more coherent early merchant-trade work songs crept in, too, for which I suppose I’d recommend Stan Hugill’s Shanties from the Seven Seas (Mystic Seaport, 1994). Hugill quotes Landsman Hay (1834) with a specific mention of “Drops of Brandy” and “Off She Goes” as capstan songs played on the fife aboard HMS Culloden in 1804; there’s a passage in Shipboard Life from the diary of a midshipman’s tutor on how sailors insist on singing everything to the tune of “Admiral Hosier’s Ghost.” Jack Tar has a nice if brief description of forebitters and their singers; there’s also Roast Beef of Old England, a collection of songs inspired by the Aubreyad, if that interests you. You might also check out http://www.jsward.com/shanty/index.shtml.
homosexuality
I don’t own any books specifically about homosexuality at sea! This is in part because there…aren’t many? There are surprisingly few explicit mentions of homosexuality in period sources; opinions differ as to whether this is because 1. the severity of the punishment and the fierceness of the approbation were such that people didn’t do gay stuff at sea; or 2. the severity of the punishment and the fierceness of the approbation were such that people didn’t talk about doing gay stuff at sea. I’m solidly in the latter camp, here, but the fact remains that primary sources are thin on the ground.
Rodger summarizes: “the very fact that it was completely illegal, and severely punished if discovered, makes it impossible to write a full history of it.” Almost all the definitive accounts of homosexual activity in the navy are transcripts of trials, and in most of those trials, one party is accusing the other of assault.  Presumably the vast majority of queer activity was not reported and thus not recorded. I’m sure sooner or later close reading of some lieutenant’s letters will turn up something interesting, but until then it’s the trials (which can make for fairly miserable reading).
Personally, I’ve relied on more general sources: Homosexuality in the EighteenthCentury and the like. I like “Buggery’s Travels: Royal Navy Sodomy on Ship and Shore in the Long Eighteenth Century,” (JMR 2015); it’s quite short, and its main concern is the perception of homosexuality—the idea of identifiable stereotypes, etc—but I seem to remember a good biblio? But Burg is the go-to, I think. I’ve also just been reading Ackroyd’s Queer City; it is not very naval, but for general period atmosphere it’s helpful.
So, in summary, I have basically zero helpful answers to your questions. I should like to say again that I am hardly an expert in any of this! But I don’t know, maybe something here will be helpful to someone. (And, you know, feel free to correct me on any points.)

Question Thing
I got tagged by both @mieliikki and @scienceoftheidiot, so boy oh boy do I have some questions to answer! Here goes: (And this is going under a cut because it got waaay  longer than I meant it to.)
1. Favourite historical era?
Geesh... I love ‘em all, but probably The Napoleonic Wars. After all, that’s where we get Age of Sail from!
2. Favourite landmark?
Probably Fingal’s Cave or Cenote do Ojos. I love sea caves.
3. How many languages do you speak?
Just the one, unfortunately. But I’m learning Welsh! and I can do all kinds of accents and dialects.
4. Which scene from your favourite show stands out to you the most?
Oh no, I have to pick?? Maybe... okay. (Spoilers incoming, if you haven’t seen it yet) In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season Five, the episode called Fool for Love. When Buffy has Spike out behind the Bronze and she’s interrogating him about how he killed Nikkie Wood. And the camera keeps flashing between him and Buffy and him and Nikkie and there’s this incredible sense of tension and danger and you remember for a second what kind of a man he was before they put that stupid chip in his head and you can just see him getting off on the idea of all the pain and the slayers’ collective death wish. Buffy ends up rejecting him when he confesses his feelings for her, and he goes home with murder on his mind. But when he hunts her down, shotgun in hand, he finds her shattered with the news of her mother’s illness, and he suddenly can’t bring himself to do it anymore. The episode closes with them just sitting side by side silently. It’s foreshadowing of their soon to unfold (unhealthy) relationship. Because they’re both so deeply scarred and broken that, even though they fundamentally abhor each other to start , they need each other because no one close to them can fully grasp the trauma that they’ve been struggling with. It’s also a really nice example of how ultimately Buffy’s strength and resilience is such that even when she’s feeling just so lost and helpless, she still can bring out the best in everyone around her without even knowing she’s doing it. (and that went on way too long, but that’s what it is)
5. Favourite mythological creature?
Selkie! They’re so beautiful and mysterious.
6. If you could master one skill what would it be?
Gene Kelley-style Tap Dance!
7. Favourite genre of music?
Anything a little weird! I guess based on what I’ve been listening to recently though it would have to be Spooky Folk.
8. Who is your greatest inspiration?
Tie between David Bowie and Robin Williams. They’ve both taught me so much about self-love and artistic discovery and bringing other people joy through art and performance that I legitimately don’t know what I would be doing today if it weren’t for them.
9. City or countryside?
I adore the countryside, but if it’s a city like Savannah Georgia then I’ll have to go with city. With the cobbled streets and dead end alleys and pirate smuggling houses, so chock full of ghosts and ghouls and local legends that the air just thrums with its own special spirit. The ever present lap of water and ships the size of apartment complexes cruising nonchalantly by like the behemoths of a dystopian maritime realm. Where the magical and manufactured meld together into a surreal in between world where peaches are always in season and you can see weird shadows out of the corner of your eye in your favorite coffee shop. The bronze statues on plinths in the square seem to just slightly shift positions sometimes and every once in a while wear a chagrined expression like a teenager whose parents have just caught them sneaking back home when they weren’t supposed to be out. I love those sorts of cities.
10. If you could relive one past memory what would it be?
Mmm. Probably cliff diving in Costa Rica. It was like nothing I’ve ever done before or since.
11. Are you religious?
Kind of? I’m a Christian, but I’ve had nothing but lousy experiences with the Church as a whole, so I tend to veer sharply away from anything organized. I prefer to just study on my own.
What is the last thing you cooked ?  A really yummy chicken casserole and some fresh veggies!
What would you name your pet if you had a new one ? if he was a boy, then Merry, but if she was a girl, then Saoirse (Seersha).
What do you think about cryptids ? I. Love. Cryptids. There’s just something fascinating to me about the idea that there’s still more out there than we know!
Artist or just enjoying the art, do you prefer traditional or digital ? Artist! I’ve been using digital more recently. I think it’s a little more challenging than traditional, but you have unlimited colors and there’s less setup time.
Favourite super-heros ? Deary me. Thank goodness for that plural. Daredevil, Constantine, Lucifer, Rudy from Misfits (he counts shh) Deadpool, Spiderman, and the list goes on
Last show you watched ? Doctor Who! The season four finale, with the Daleks and the DoctorDonna.
If you could visit any new country, which one ? Probably Wales. It’s so pretty!
Which type of tea ? Chai Tea
What is your Hogwarts house ?  Slytherin!!
Where are you from ? The swampy, perpetually liminal lands of the Southern US.
C’est une bonne situation, ça, scribe ? ... Yes? I feel like google mistranslated it or some context was lost or something lol.
Okay, my questions!
1. Favorite Villains?
2. Favorite Folk Story?
3. If you could choose to live in any fictional story, what would it be and why?
4. Hornblower or the Aubreyad?
5. Colin Firth or Matthew Macfadyen?
6. Most embarassing childhood fact (that you feel comfortable sharing with god and everybody)?
7. Favorite series that was cancelled too soon?
8. Favorite books that the movie/tv show screwed up?
9. Have you ever seen a movie you preferred to the book? What was it?
10. Favorite obscure, under the radar band?
11. Steampunk or Dieselpunk?
and I tag (sorry for the repeats BUT): @scienceoftheidiot @mieliikki @rebelside @heymoon9 @isaannart @scribbledhandwrite @savageinkspillage @corpyburd @soot-and-snide @lasimo74allmyworld @ktpal15

Dear Yuletide Writer
Hello, Yuletide Writer! It is nice to not meet you for the next three months.
I am so thrilled that you are up for writing in one of these fandoms, all of which are very special to me! So whatever it is you end up writing, I am going to be so pleased.
I’m happy with any rating, style, theme or tone, from the heartwarming to the disturbing. My requests all lend themselves to slash, but if you would rather write gen or het, then please go for it. Basically the only line I would draw is that I would prefer not to read anything explicitly non-consensual.
In case it’s useful (?!) for you to see a document of, mostly, me tag-yelling incoherently underneath giftsets of whatever you’re writing about, you can check out my tumblr tags for Raffles, Trapeze, or JSMN! Plus some extra notes and ideas below if you’d like them:
Raffles If this is something that you’d be up for exploring, I am really interested in the less pleasant aspects of Raffles and Bunny’s relationship. Raffles is horrible to Bunny, really. He repeatedly manipulates him, uses him, ignores him, lies to him… but Bunny is just so unbelievably into Raffles that, even when he is aware of this happening, and unhappy or angry about it, he is totally powerless to escape. This isn’t to say I don’t think that Raffles cares about Bunny at all— or even that Raffles isn’t obsessed with Bunny just as much as Bunny is (WILDLY) obsessed with him— but I do think the levels of care and obsession and power in their relationship are very uneven. And I’m extremely here for that. Alternatively, will read a very nice story about them having a very nice time together. Not fussy! Just super into these intensely co-dependent 1890s guys!!!
Trapeze This is my perennial Yuletide request, and every year my notes about it are unhelpfully vague. Sorry. But I would love to read anything about Mike and Tino. I think some of what got to me about this film was the intense physicality of it— the focus on bodies, and on the amazing things they can do, and bodies having to be in tune with each other— right the way through to the characters having physical fights instead of being able to express how they are feeling in words. (I’m into that.) Does that help? I don’t know. There’s so little fic in this fandom that anything would be a total joy.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell I’ve requested Strange and Childermass for this fandom, because I think there is a SHOCKING lack of fic about the two of them even interacting, let alone Strange/Childermass slash, which, my god, if you are up for writing, I would DEVOUR. However, I also considered requesting Arabella and/or Grant, and then realised the way the matching works means I would be limiting myself to a writer who had offered all four of those characters… but if you are interested about writing about either of them, especially in combination with Strange and/or Childermass, I’d very happy to receive fic about them too. Basically any of those four characters in any platonic or romantic combination. Is what I think I’m trying to say.
(CURVEBALL: surely, one day, someone is going to write an Aubreyad crossover about Childermass being a sailor prior to the events of the book/TV show…?! I have obviously not requested the Aubreyad as a fandom, so I do not actually expect you, Yuletide writer, to provide this for me, but I just feel like I should publicly remind people as often as possible that this fic ought to exist… so I’m not wasting this opportunity)
Anyway— I hope you have fun writing whatever it is you’re going to write. I’m gonna love it. You’re the best. Thank you!
