We were so focused on our sword training that Johann and I didn’t notice that Mingfei, Nono and Crow were watching from a distance.

Mingfei and Nono had decided that there was enough information here to spend several nights studying and there was no point in making the long drive back to the shrine.

“As for me,” Crow said, “I have to go back to work!”

“You’re leaving us?” I asked with some worry.

“Sure thing, Prince Charming.” I rolled my eyes.

He planted a kiss on Ru’Yi’s soft hair. “I left some stuff here for her. As well as some food for you. Good food, not the instant noodles and beer I left for the others.”

Mingfei’s jaw dropped. “What are we, chopped liver?”

“Your bodies can take it! Carli has to eat healthy for the baby to grow strong!” Crow roared in response.

“Uh. By the way!” Mingfei said loudly. “Do you think Crow has a thing for you?”

I lifted my head, dazed. “Huh?”

“Yeah speaking of obvious...” Nono smirked at me. “I think you should go for it.”

“Oh please.” I rolled my eyes. “He’s very kind and... what he said was nice, but you could tell he was putting on an act.”

“Was making all these dishes for you an act? What about all the baby supplies?” Nono pointed out.

I looked over at it. “He said he’s always wanted kids... ”

I turned my eyes to Johann who was tucked away in a sleeping bag. “I’m already married.”

“He just doesn’t know it.” Nono pursed her lips.

I chewed my lip. “I can’t do that. I swore to death... not to memory.”

Nono tilted her head and cracked open a beer. “Well, I’m done for tonight.”

“Yeah... let’s take a break.” Mingfei said, looking at me with sad eyes.

The next day we were back to it again, this time searching for his sources. One name kept coming up again and again.

Bondarev. 

“Herzog himself said that his original research was just going to help him to create a super army which... as far as villains go is not a very creative plot.” Mingfei commented. “He only started talking about the Sacred Skeleton after Bondarev came into the picture.”

By that evening, we had opened and closed at least a hundred books, taking pictures and searching for any references to Bondarev we could find.

We kept asking ourselves: Where did Bondarev get his knowledge? He claimed to be a Romanov, a family of Tsar’s that according to Secret Society information, were hybrids.

“But if Bondarev had inherited this knowledge from his ancestors, why did they go west to fight Hitler and not push into Japan to conquer them and get the most valuable treasure?” Nono said. “Japan was not really an opponent to them later either. But this guy is leading him step by step to becoming the White King on his own!”

“Herzog copied Bonderev’s route to becoming the White King pretty much verbatim.” Mingfei added.

According to Herzog’s notes, he killed Bondarev in a sneak attack, but it seemed too easy. Such a mysterious man was shot by Herzog through a cabin wall with a machine gun so that he died. “Herzog himself also said in the diary, ‘I don’t know if it is really Bondarev, I’ve killed.’”

The face of the deceased was Japanese, not Russian. Herzog guessed that it was Bondarev based on his body and figured Bonderev had performed some sort of plastic surgery to blend in and become part of the Hydra.”

We stared at each other a moment. After two nights, we had seemed to have gotten no closer to any answers. Nono, fed up, grabbed one of the books and pitched it across the room.

Crow, who had just walked in, caught it right in the face. “Wow! Good evening!” He rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Did I come at a bad time?”

“Do you see my face?” Nono snarled, crossing her arms.

“Aaah! So scary! I come bearing gifts!” He held up a bag as if to shield himself. “To make up for my oversight earlier. Fresh gift fruits from the Academy!”

We looked at the bag like it was a bomb. And it could have been given that the Gear Department wasn’t above hiding explosive devices in food.

“Ahahah! It’s fine! I tested it myself on the way here! The finest in Japan. The melon alone is about ten grand!”

Ru’Yi squealed when she saw Crow and he picked her up and squeezed her. “You’re too young for solid food princess!” He planted a loud raspberry into her cheek.

Ru’Yi reached out and grabbed his nose, cackling with a wide smile.

With his nose pinched, he said, “Moutong-sama, if you could please take a look at the video on my phone here. They’ve asked me to broadcast it all over Tokyo.”

He handed over the phone then turned to continue to play with Ru’Yi.

On the screen was a burly middle-aged man with a square face and a determined expression. 

“Motong, if you can see this video, please be sure to watch it all the way through. This is a message from your family. You are in great danger. The people you are with are potentially violent and have committed serious crimes. Your family misses your safety very much and hope you will know how to return.”

“This Mingfei business has nothing to do with you. You are innocent. You have been deceived. No matter where you are now, as long as you fight to come home, call the following number and we have the absolute ability to ensure your safety....”

Nono tossed the phone back to Crow. “What does he consider me? A little girl who fell down a well?” She said, her tone cold.

Crow and Mingfei exchanged glances.

“So... he really is your father?” Crow asked carefully. “You don’t have a good relationship with him?”

“Can you see my face right now?” Nono circled her face with one finger.

When Crow tried to ask another question, Mingfei made a throat cutting gesture.

“Well if you don’t care, I’ll let it broadcast then.” He shrugged, pocketing the phone.

“This is... getting too heavy... Why don’t we go out to eat?” Mingfei humbly suggested. “I know a place near here. A 24-hour Ramen shop. We can decompress there.”

#2: King Yamir, King of illusions - unfinished Is a story where Yugi got kidnapped from his home and is now traveling back after 50 years with a dragon, a knight and two centaurs and their friend. However once he arrives, he realizes things have changed and he isnt sure if the life with the humans might have been better off, even if they got rid of his wings.

#3 Mermaids  - unfinished An au where Yugi gets himself into trouble by swimming too close to the surface and he ends up getting hit by the blade of a boat propeller. Kaiba ends up taking care of him but pegasus wants to put him on display. Atem meanwhile is furiously searching in every corner of the sea to find Yugi back and will stop at nothing to find him.

#4 Untamed  - unfinished Prince Yugi is in search of a mythical beast in the woods that bears the fruit of life on its antlers which can save his grandfather, and the current king’s life. if he fails however, his evil uncle Aknaheden will assend the throne and plunge the kingdom into destruction. Meanwhile he kidnaps a child, befriends the most sarcastic cook ever and insults a young prodigee mage along the way.

... tbh i think shiirojasmine would love what i have in store for that one but im too afraid to tag anyone in this long post.

#5 Aelves  - unfinished This story was created before King Yamir. It centered around Atem and his family which were orphans that lived on the streets before getting taken in by townspeople. Atem was the apprentice of a blacksmith bullied by a fierce adventerous knight who told him he would never make good swords, Timaël (Timaeus’ counterpart) was a sheperdboy who was afraid of sheep and Heba worked in a bakery. They find out their parents have been killed by Aelves and plan on finding these Aelves only to befriend Yami, Yugi and Timaeus because they saved one that almost drowned in the river while the other two were unnable to swim. 

This was the original idea, but there were too many characters and though i havent really written a good amount on it, this hasbeen revised into number 6

#6 Aelves  - unfinished Atem finds himself in a bind when he befriends a young Aelf when another thinks he is going to be Yugi’s candidate for the wild hunt. The wild hunt involves humans having to run as the Aelves chase them riding deer. And the human has the marry the Aelf that captures them. Also Yugi hits Atem with a frying pan because why not.

#7 The Time we Share -  finished Probably the only fanfic i have ever finished. Resolves about Yami, a social awkward young man that is in love with his introverted neighbor and has no idea how to handle it. A short oneshot. Nobody understands it. I dont even know myself.

#8 Words better left unsaid  - unfinished Another Neighbor Au Where Yami is a serial killer that partakes in weird human sacrifice rituals. Yugi is so dense however he doesnt notice it. Meanwile Yami keeps stalking him around, always knowing an excuse to be in the same place as Yugi. Eventually Yugi just takes him along because reasons he doesnt find suspicious at all. But having an infatuated serial killing stalker is a good thing when the world finds out you are in possession of an ancient artifact made of solid gold and everyone wants to kill you.

#9 Mirror Immage - unfinished (this is an old one) What if there was a life on the other side of the mirror that was the entire opposite of your own yet still looked exactly the same? And what if you fell through? What if your Mirror Immage was right beside you, instead of being a mere reflection? #10 We create this world - unfinished Based on an old fanfiction of mine called Need A Second to Breathe- basically it is a rewrite of this- In where Yami, Atem and the other egyptiantied cast are the incarnated gods of Egypt. Yami is not allowed to enter the Human world but does so anyway, finding Yugi. He uses his godlike powers to make Yugi happy and angers Atem further. However Atem once made the same mistake of falling in love with a human called Heba, and Yugi looking like Heba is not helping in the slightest. Yugi keeps having viseons of Heba, whos ghost has returned from the underworld, however at the terrible price of being possessed by an evil spirit. And yugi has to choose between giving up his body to save Heba, or not doing so, in turn losing Yami.

#11 A Shadow’s cast - unfinished I think I was either very tired or sick writing this one because it doesnt make any sense. Basically Yugi wakes to find a visitor in his home that is trying to hide from an organisation that is trying to hurt hus guest. Needs a desperate rewrite. 

#12 The Cecaelia - unfinished but up for reading Here What do you do when you find a little creature out on the beach being attacked by seagulls? Chuck it back into the ocean, or take care of it? #13 Mob Boss Yugi - unfinished This kind of was based on Shiirojasmine’s 3 gods au and it sort of formed into my own concoction I suppose. An au where Yugi often blacks out and becomes Yami, one of the greatest mob bosses the world has ever seen. Mai and Joey being undercover agents. Yugi gets scared and writes letters to his other self, finding out that he is a mere puppet that is to serve Atem. Atem is being captured by an evil organisation and has year to pay all his depts using Yugi, or he will be killed. A heist takes place at school and Yugi can no longer determine wether he is a high school student or a wanted drugdealer.

 #14 Beast Assylum  - unfinished  A creepy Au where Yugi and Atem have been subjected to Lycanthropy and are being locked away so they cant hurt any innocent people ever again. Instead they are being used to get rid of people society doesnt want and or need.  Atem is a crybaby. Yugi has been planning his escape for a long time now, why has he started to care for the other, this was not supposed to happen! #15 Baby And a Pharo  - unfinished A spoof fanfiction where Yugi solves a puzzle as a baby and somehow it is a portal to the past. The Egyptians think he is son or Ra and Atem takes Yugi under his wing. However Time in Yugis verse moves faster and He has to make the disission wether he wants to stay with Atem forever or not. #16 Two Necromancers - unfinished Two necromancers. A prince and a thief. They both get resurrected to life to stop big threat to the world.What the two necromancers didn't account for was that they were sworn enemies. #17 Darkness beast  - unfinished This one is too long to explain so enjoy the short version Kaiba and Dartz open up a portal to a knight-and-dragon Era and get the kings of the land they opened the portal on at their sides, Dartz tries to provoke a war, Yugi tries to stop him, Atem goes missing and then Yugi has to take care of a shadow like creature, until Dartz decides to put it onto the chessboard and use it as a threath to Kaiba and his alliences. 

#18 Demons - unfinished Demons. When the world discovered that demons could be summoned to do one’s bidding, they didn’t quite understand what that meant. People were naïve and greedy. And it wouldn’t be long before one would summon something that nobody could control. Basically Ludus’s origin story. Needs a good solid rewrite.

#19 Mewtwo Yami  - unfinished A stupid crossover where Yami ends up  being raised by Mewtwo, thinks he is a pokemon, meets Yugi and wants to compete in pokemon battles (bullies Yugi into being his trainer so he can compete) to prove he is the strongest “pokemon” to make Mewtwo proud of him.

#20 The Assylum  - unfinished Another one of these fics. basically what you would expect. Yami has the ability to see monsters that disguise themselves as humans and exterminates them, Yugi thinks he is just a mentally sick, cold blooded killer. Truth is Yami is also a monster.

#21 Chasing You  - unfinished Ai Atem gets the task to find Yugi, so Atem can hold him in his arms, but Ai Atem has his own sights set on Kaiba. Atem, after a suicidal attempt which caused him to lose both his legs and a finger, refuses to undergo any opperation which could make him use prostetic legs in order to walk again. With nobody to care for him, he stays at the hospital. However one night he hearsa small voice, which is Yugi, his guardian angel, and if they fuse, Atem regains his legs. However if they remain fused for longer than 3 hours, Yugi will disappear.

At one point when atem tries to kiss him, she punches him bc yami in no way is gonna kiss that bastard xD atem mistakes it as hes gone too far and yugi is just superconfused why she did that xD I already know what i want the end to be but its kind of a sad part on yami's part? Also there is a part where atem finds out yugi is actually yami or something

Johann helped me up and together we walked back to my bedroom. The light quickly faded and we were in the dark. He took advantage of it to lean over and give me a gentle kiss.

“I’ll take care of myself. Don’t worry.” I whispered. “Be careful down there. Don’t come see me in the morning.”

He nodded, understanding. 

He stood there until I closed the door. I leaned against it, closed my eyes and imagined him on the other side of the wood, hands opposite mine.

Ielia appeared behind me. I went to get my permanent marker. I began to draw the time dilation runes on the wall. I would get plenty of rest… three hours in here would be one hour outside. I turned down the blanket and let my mind relax.

I had a strange dream of being underwater but I could breathe. When I opened my eyes, I was staring into a yellow gaze but it wasn’t Johann. A hand stroked my face. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t stop it. I was scared. 

The hand moved across my father’s dragonscale. A woman’s voice. “Ouroboros…?”

A man’s voice. “Ouroboros… Do we have your blessing?”

“We…?” I asked.

“Yamir… and I….?” asked the woman.

“Who are you?”

My eyes opened. I was in my room. My face was wet.

“Why… why am I … why am I crying…?” I got my breathing under control so it didn’t hurt. I pulled my legs over the edge of the bed. A piece of paper was there, slid just under the door.

I walked over and got it. 

It was a drawing of me. It wasn’t elaborate, a basic sketch. I was standing under the cherry blossoms at the edge of a lake. Only one person had seen me there. 

I nodded and then went back to my bed. 

I took out my pen and wrote. “I had a strange dream. I believe there are two people down there. But they’re not twins. At least I don’t think so. One is a man, the other is a woman.”

I moved to slip the paper under the door but then I stopped. My eyes were filled with tears. 

“Why…” I bit my lip. “Why am I crying?!”

Ielia’s hand moved around the curve of my cheek. She looked solemn. She floated back over to my computer. Lu had set it up so that it was connected to EVA, just like before. It was time to work. The text spread out before me on the screen and I could see the images in my head now. A pair of deep crimson eyes, like coral. A smooth, dark face… like marble…

The room was filled with the images. I wasn’t just reading any more. I was experiencing them. Just like in the Tomb of Legends, the text leaped into view, the whispers into my ears.

I began to type, filling in the blanks, correcting the misunderstandings. Adding my own footnotes for references.

It was a land torn apart by family feuds and revenge. Yamir, a young boy, lived with his family, eking out a meager existence on a rice farm with his mother and father. A marauder band came. When his father was cut down in the field, he ran to his mother. Together, they fled into the jungle. But they didn’t get far.

She pushed him down under a bush. I could see her tearful eyes as she was dragged from him by her hair. He stayed under the bush, eyes fixed on his mother’s lifeless body.

It began to rain….

“Carli? Carli are you there?”

I lifted my head, eyes wide. “Y...yes!” The voice was coming from the computer. “The mission begins in a couple of hours. You should take a break.”

EVA. “W...what time is it?”

“It’s 9 am. You’ve been working all night.” Her electronic voice was tinged with concern.

I swallowed hard. “Oh…” I stared at the work I’d done. I’d filled twenty pages of text. My hands ached. My body ached. I was stiff. I was hungry and thirsty. “Right… I’ll… I’ll take a break.”

I stood up and staggered from the room, haunted by what I’d just seen.

RAW HOUSE #1: Yamir - Willingness to Experiment

At times you see new faces on the various forums which struck you as something else entirely. When I first saw a vague lamppost in between some trees breathing a heavy light onto a distorted image I was in a stage where post-rock was beginning to plan a new seed in me and experimental music was deep into my subconscious. I put the release on and I could precisely remember when all gone black while music still remained in my ears... It was „I Stole This Riff”, the first EP by Puerto Rico-based musician Yamir. Today in the first ever Raw House we'll discuss the matter of his newly released LP „Mullväd” as well as dig into some background on his musical project, his ethereal love to Keiji Haino and a fear of failure on a small island in the Atlantic.

I.  EFFECTS OF WAR

RAW HOUSE: Firstly, I wanted to congratulate you for releasing „Mullväd” which I find, in my honest opinion, a worthy successor to your self-titled LP way back when. Immediately when I've heard that title I had to check it out. However, much to my surprise, I couldn't really find a proper meaning to that title. Should a listener feel this sort of unknown behind your album names?

YAMIR: Well, it doesn't really relate much at all to the album, mainly I picked it out because part of the inspiration for Mullväd and creating a five part track came from The Residents' album, Mark of the Mole. So I took the word mole and looked for a language it would look cool in, i.e. Swedish and I added the “ä” so it would look less plain. The Residents seem to be people I steal a lot of name ideas from, like Angakok and I Stole This Riff are both Residents songs as well.

RAW HOUSE: Would you say then that The Residents are one of these key artists that influenced you throughout your musical project?

YAMIR: Definitely, along with Branca and Haino, which are much more obvious influences.

RAW HOUSE: Your album starts with a very slow guitar-based „A Study In Noise” with a very bleak progression, slowly building up to become this sculpture of noise. That slowly build up track really reminds me of more experimental rock based bands; the first example out of the hat would be Swans. How much these experimental bands made you came to realization that you want to do music of that nature?

YAMIR: I'm not too big on Swans outside of their self titled EP, but they were one of the bands that drove me in this direction. There's a few tracks I scrapped from the album because halfway through making them I realized they sounded almost identical to Oxygen or some other track of theirs. What really convinced me to try this out was Sonic Youth and Glenn Branca. I was reading this SY biography a few months back, and it had a lot of interviews with Branca and his music, so I thought to myself: "Hey, there really hasn't been anyone that's done Branca's style of guitar composition that I know of, I should try it out myself!". And from there I made A Study in Noise.

RAW HOUSE: Now „For Keiji” seems quite obvious for me – as somebody who recognizes you on the various forums by the picture of Keiji Haino giving feedback to other's musicians. It feels like there is a deeper connection with this artist. Why did you decide to dedicate that particular track to Keiji? What is his overall influence on your musical perspective?

YAMIR: Well, obviously I am a huge fan of him, mainly because of his willingness to experiment with any instrument and genre from psych rock to noise to a capella to DJ mixes, and just this mysterious aura that surrounds him. I dedicated that track to him because it sounds pretty similar to something you'd hear on his collabs with O'Rourke and Ambarchi, plus that style of improvisation and the guitar tone come straight from him.

RAW HOUSE: Another thing which put me on guard immediately – drumming. Now Ryan Sinclair isn't a new name in your project, he has been there since the first releases on your Bandcamp. How does the collaborative work like your releases influences you as a solo musician? What do you feel Ryan puts on the record with his work that you wouldn't otherwise?

YAMIR: Well, actually Ryan didn't really change much in terms of collaborative work, I'd just asked him for some drumming for a song on my s/t and he delivered. He actually didn't exactly contribute to this, either. I've been trying to message him since July of past year but he's nowhere to be found. He'd left me a few drum solos I had asked him for to use in another project I ended up scrapping. While making For Keiji, I came across the solos in my files and I realized they were perfect for the song. Drums is something I've always had a problem finding, so I'm really glad he left me some extra things to work with, because otherwise I would've just used a drum machine like on other tracks.

RAW HOUSE: Another contributor to the release is Prikc who I haven't heard before and his acoustic elements adds a very nice space in the release. In general you were trying to give other people some space on your releases. I remember some violin elements from Dear Laika, for example.  How do you view collaboration, in general?

YAMIR: Well, Prikc is one of my best friends, and I've been meaning to make some proper releases collaborating with him. He is way better at doing improvisation in guitar so I decided to give him a space on the album to exercise it. I think collaborating, especially at these levels, is very important since it helps both of you gain more popularity from each other's fans and can give a very interesting twist to your music. I wouldn't say any of the people that have been featured in my music were "collaborations", but more that I just commissioned them to do some work that I needed for a track. I do hope to make some proper collaborations in the future, though.

RAW HOUSE: Then we come to „Mullväd” - what a beast! This almost look like something taken out the progressive rock band's book. It is staggeringly different from the first tracks you've made on your first EP. What was the intention behind pulling these five tracks together?

YAMIR: Like I said before, it was mainly the idea of creating a sort of small story around the album, which kinda came to me when I realized that three of the tracks I was working on at the moment would fit perfectly one after the other, and had a certain mood behind them that i could form into a story. And from there, I fixed those tracks a bit so they'd transition into each other and made the missing tracks fit into the missing parts of the story. I'd say they're very very loosely based on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, but that's because I used those interview samples.

RAW HOUSE: So, should we say that this album is about war? Or the suffering of existence? What did you tried to do say though these interview samples?

YAMIR: Well, I'd say that the Mullväd tracks are more about the after effects of war than war itself. The interview samples I feel just help add to the theme of the tracks and I guess shed a little light on what the songs are supposed to be about to the listener.

RAW HOUSE: „Mullväd”, in general, features an array of different genre mixes. Somehow it feels like a one cohesive release though. How do you find a way to combine what seems like a different songs formed with a very different mold in mind?

YAMIR: It usually wasn't easy to come up with ways combine the tracks, I rarely write down what I have in mind to make, so it's more just spontaneous ideas I get while working on them or just by trial and error.

RAW HOUSE: Was this spontaneous nature also present when you were making your music ever since the beginning of your project?

YAMIR: Yup, the only song I ever really "penned" would be A Study in Noise, and even then I would change the things I wrote and add new things as I made it.

RAW HOUSE: So it all comes from emotions of the current moment?

YAMIR: Exactly.

RAW HOUSE: I really love the finale of your release. A blissful post-rock ambiance filled with some sort of „magic” behind it; that's probably my favorite track from you. The bleakness, the atmosphere of it all is really speaking to me. In addition, the words about Nagasaki in the interview provides no foot to really stand onto. What do you think gives a release a great atmosphere? YAMIR: I don't think it's too hard to create a great atmosphere, as long as your song is really good and it has a lot of detail to it, you can make most people get really immersed in it. 

II. MUSIC OF THE MOON

RAW HOUSE: Since we started talking about atmosphere, I want to track back to your beginnings. Yamir, as a name, refers to the moon which is featured on your profile picture and some glimpses of that moody, almost vague in my eyes, atmosphere is presented in your album covers. How did you decide to provide that art direction to your releases? Was it a conscious decision or more of the gut feeling inside yourself?

YAMIR: Okay, the moon profile picture was definitely a coincidence and not intentional at all, I never would've realized unless you'd told me! The art direction for my album covers is conscious, though. Up until this album, all the artwork were pictures I'd take and then play around with in whatever free editing program I could get my hands on. I always try to look for the best image that looks beautiful and at the same time lets you know what kind of music it's going to give you. I'm not as good with the latter, but I think it's very important, at least in my musical output.

RAW HOUSE: Has it been hard for you to start your music project?

YAMIR: At first, it was pretty easy, it was just me messing around with Audacity and having fun seeing what I could make. But as time went on, I started to get a bit more serious about it. I began to get very ambitious with the things I wanted to make, which has led to a lot of frustration. Making this album was pretty hard, especially with me now having pretty much only the weekends to record, but in the end, now matter how hard it is, it's definitely worth it just to see everyone's reaction to it, which is what's kept me going.

RAW HOUSE: Puerto Rico feels to me like a place which might be more open to experimentation than other countries. Yet you are placed next to Jamaica – a giant music juggernaut with it's reggae movement, and the US which, to be frank, was a culture pot producing a thousands and thousands hours of music daily. How one does find himself musically in the environment like this?

YAMIR: Here in Puerto Rico, the music scene is very similar to the US, since we were taken as bounty from Spain and then colonized. I think I'm stuck in between the two current underground scenes going on, one being the punk rock and metal scene, and the weird experimental electronic/noise scene. I don't exactly fit into either of those so it can be a bit hard to market myself to either side, plus I don't often get the chance to go to their events and get to know the scene, because everything's going on on the other side of the island and they like to do their events at odd times like 2AM on a Wednesday.

RAW HOUSE: So you think it is easy to cope with being an experimentalist there?

YAMIR: Yeah, there's definitely a market for experimental artists here, as small as it might be.

RAW HOUSE: What do you think about failure? Is this something which you consider within the realms of your musical passion? How do you cope with it?

YAMIR: Oh yeah, I think about it a lot. It worries me that I'm wasting away months on end working on something only for nobody to listen to it. I don't really have a ways to cope with it, I just try to push the thought out of my head and just look at my stats for comfort haha. RAW HOUSE: What do you think of live performances in general? Do you, in general, prefer them over the studio environment? Do you want to present your music live in the future?

YAMIR: Living in a tropical island in the Caribbean, I don't get to see a lot of live shows often, cause all that comes over here are huge pop stars and old 80’s metal bands looking for a quick vacation and some tour money. The few that I've been to were mediocre Latino rock bands (Maná and Los Enanitos Verdes, for example) and they were definitely way more enjoyable live than on a studio recording. I don't really think that's the case for all artists, though, depending on what they do live, if they play only new material or just their hits. I would love to do my music live, but I'd be stuck to a pretty limited song selection, plus I'd need to find someone to help me out with all the other electronic noises while I'm playing guitar.

RAW HOUSE: What are you listening to right now? What would you personally recommend?

YAMIR: Recently I've been getting into electronic music, mainly just techno and most of its more minimal or ambient subgenres. Jazz is also something I'm quite big on, I'm digging through the ECM label and they have so much fantastic stuff. The other thing I've started getting into is my people's music, reggaeton. Now while Americans just see it as some lame fad from the early 2000s, there's a lot of backstory to it and it's even had a renaissance in recent years. I'd hate to recommend a reggaeton album, so I'll just go with Ricardo Villalobos - Fizheuer Zieheuer. It's what got me into microhouse and techno stuff. Definitely not for people who don't like repetition, though.

RAW HOUSE: As an artist, overall, how would you say you have progressed so far?

YAMIR: I've definitely progressed so much in terms of mixing and production. Looking back at those first songs I made, they were so cluttered and muddy, which was one of the biggest critiques I'd be getting. In general I've just gotten better at songwriting, guitar playing, and being a lot more resourceful with the limited amount of instruments and programs I have to work with.

RAW HOUSE: Finally - what's in store for Yamir in the not too distant future?

YAMIR: Right now, I don't have any big plans for a follow up to Mullväd. I want to focus on getting my music around, especially here on the island. I have a few ideas and some side projects to toy around with, though. I'm hoping to put out a collaboration or two with Prikc, whatever we make is probably going to be the next thing I put out. If all goes well, I might even try to do a live show.

Dragon Dancer II: Chapter 3: Sons of Raj

“You’re not bad!” Robertson passed me the basketball. 

I caught it easily, dribbling in place. “I’m used to people being taller than me, it comes with the territory of being short.”

I wasn’t supposed to be outside, but I’d made so much headway on the translation project, that I could afford a day off. Ielia rapidly corrected EVA’s errors and clarified context. We were more than halfway through and it had only been ten days. 

The tale was an epic one. An Indian warrior who was strong and deadly, but wise and compassionate so that he gathered a huge following and spread his rule throughout the land of India. His name was Raj Yamir. The text praised him for his handsomeness, his humility, and his intelligence. The entire text seemed to be about him.

Master List

Robertson made sure everything was safe, before allowing me outside where he’d jerry-rigged a hoop on a tall oak tree.

“You play basketball with Johann yet?”  He asked.

“Yeah a bit, but,” I wrinkled my nose. “He’s too nervous to be competitive so… it’s not very fun.”

Robertson laughed. “You understand though. Can’t get too rough with your girlfriend out on the court.”

“Yeah well, that means we don’t play.” I put the ball under my arm, sticking out my tongue. “I play with Lu. He’s not as good though.”

Robertson looked up at the hoop, running his hands through his hair in nostalgia. “Yeah, me and Tianjiao Chu used to play all the time, all the time.” He wiped his brow. “He ain’t as good as his dad, that’s for sure.”

“You knew his dad?” I caught my breath, not expecting this.

“Oh yeah! Me and Chu go way back!” He knitted his brow.

“Hold the phone! Tell me! Tell me! What was his dad like?” I ran up to him.

“He was like Johann… but more fun. Guy liked Irish music, sappy ol’ movies. Serious about his work but … not much else. Dude was hilarious.” He laughed at a memory I couldn’t see. “In fact, Lemme show you somethin’”

We went to go sit on a concrete bench. He pulled his phone from his pocket and scrolled for a while through it. “Ah… here it is. Here’s your boy.”

As soon as I took a look at it, I inhaled sharply. It was Johann as a child in a beanie and little mittens and coat, looking overjoyed at a snowman. “It’s a baby JOHANN!” I squealed, snatching the phone. “He’s so CUTE! OH MY GOD!”

Robertson was cackling at my reaction. I couldn’t help myself. “Look at his cheeks! And his cute little smile. Awwwwwwww! He’s cuuuute!” He looked at Robertson, holding the phone to myself. “Can you send this to me? Please?! Please?! I won’t show it to anyone else!”

“Sure… sure, sure, sure…” His chuckle turned mischievous.

I handed him his phone back. “Johann said you were with the Executive Department for a long time but I did not put two and two together that you worked with his dad!” I looked up at him. “He had a lot of good things to say about you.”

He blinked down at me.

“I mean, Johann did. I didn’t know his dad.”

“Oh… right…” He cleared his throat. “Uh… Do you have any questions for me?”

“We don’t… talk about our parents very much. I know his dad died.”

He sent the picture to my device. “Yeah, I was really shocked about that. The man was unbelievable with a blade. Super experienced. So… it really caught me off guard. Even after all these years. Can’t quite believe it.”

“What happened is… probably classified.”

“Very.” He gave me wide eyes. “But… I can tell you. Johann was there when it did.”

“He saw it happen.” I whispered, my brain imagined what it must have been like, empathy growing in my heart, along with my horror. 

“My only thought is… whatever happened, Tianjiao probably had to put himself in an impossible situation to save his boy… that’s all I could think of that would make sense.”

I turned away. That made a lot of sense. I didn’t know all the circumstances, but it reminded me of a lot of children in foster whose parents died, or nearly died of overdoses. Even though they were young and they were unaware of their parents’ deadly habits, they blamed themselves for what happened. Johann couldn’t be any different.

Indeed, I blamed myself occasionally for my Robbie’s death, for skipping too far into the future and not being there to save him. It was ridiculous, but that was just the way the mind worked.

“Thank you for telling me.”

He moved to pocket his phone when it buzzed. He held it to his ear. “Robertson.” He stood up. “Carli, go to the saferoom. Now!”

His commanding voice jolted me and I stood there a second, registering the sudden urgency in his voice.

I ran inside, shoving the door open so hard it swung into the wall with a bang. I ran upstairs to retrieve the laptop.

The safe room was an underfloor bunker that was resistant to all forms of scanning and explosive devices and had enough food for three days. It also had two wall mounted monitors patched into the camera equipment outside.

The property was being swarmed in broad daylight by a dozen masked motorcyclists. They were armed with automatic rifles. The images cycled and I saw Agent Lavigne standing there to meet them, two dead men at his feet. He was wearing what appeared to be a blue bandana around his neck.

EVAs voice emerged from the monitors. “Agent Lavigne has gone rogue. You are not safe here.”

I saw Robertson jogging around the large house. He was going to Lavigne. My blood ran cold. He didn’t know.  

I focused on the monitor image of Lavigne. I stood up. I closed my eyes.

I vanished into the dark. 

When I emerged, Lavigne was standing over the bodies of his two fellow agents, raising his automatic rifle towards Robertson. He recognized my presence from the corner of his eye and turned to point the gun at me, but it was too late. I pushed him with everything in me.

But he only staggered. 

He smashed the rifle into my chest. I felt the strange sensation of something inside me caving under the blow. I fell to the ground, breathless, nauseous, pain like fireworks going off. I wrapped my arms around myself, gasping.

Robertson was roaring, firing his pistol. But the bullets embedded in a wall of thick water, like jelly. It splashed to the ground, taking the bullets with it. Robertson ducked behind the corner of the building. The other gunmen had arrived.

Lavigne turned his cold, golden eyes on me. On his bandana, I saw a clear symbol of a serpent, forming the letter S followed by an R.

I squeezed my eyes shut and vanished. I appeared again, staggering with the agony, where Robertson was hiding. He looked at me, stunned. I couldn’t talk to tell him how I could do this. I grabbed his hand. I vanished with him into the dark.

We re-emerged into the hotel room I had stayed in, the one Anjou had booked for me. Fortunately, it was empty. I collapsed to the floor, raising my voice in anguish. Crying hurt, breathing hurt. But I couldn’t stop doing either.

Robertson held me down, swearing repeatedly.  He still had his phone which he dialed cradling it between his ear and shoulder. He ripped my flimsy shirt down the middle, examining my injuries.

“Schneider, we’ve been compromised. Lavigne was a traitor. Meixiu was injured. Looks to be two… maybe three broken ribs.”

A pause.

“Sir. I’m not one to make excuses but she popped out of thin air and tried to tackle the guy!”

His eyes were glittering with fury. “I told you to go to the safe room…” He hissed at me. But that was the extent of the scolding. He immediately calmed. I’d saved his life and he knew it.

“We’re… in a hotel. Sir. I…” He fought for words. “...again, I don’t know. You don’t know she can teleport? Well she can!” He looked at me. “Where are we…?”

“I can’t remember... “ I sobbed and moaned at the same time. 

He stood up and left me. I heard him reading off the name of the hotel. He returned, still on the phone, picking me up and settling me on the bed. “It’s just a matter of time before someone finds out we’re here. I’ll put a notice on the Night Watch to get this room.”

“She’s in a lot of pain. We need to get a doctor here before someone comes in asking too many questions.”

After a few more moments, he hung up. He regarded me, kneeling next to me. I held my breath, tears rolling from my eyes.

I felt his hand on my bare shoulder, lightly rubbing my arms. “EVA uploaded your work and wiped your PC. Don’t worry, we got what we needed.”

I nodded, experimentally breathing in slightly. I was shuddering, pale, and sweating. I wanted to throw up.

“We’ve got a doctor comin’... You’re calming down… good…”

The twenty minutes it took for the doctor to arrive felt like a lifetime. In the meantime, Robertson continued to massage my arms, keeping me calm, talking to me. The doctor administered morphine and the horrible aching was whisked away. Breathing never felt so good.

The men’s voice sounded distant as they performed an X-ray right on the spot. I tried to listen but they were speaking French. Eventually, the man left us alone. 

“They’re broken, but not badly. You’ll recover just fine.” He shook his head in wonder. “You crazy girl.”

“Why?...” I asked. “What happened to Lavigne?”

“Lavigne is part of a terrorist group calling themselves Sons of Raj. They’re hybrids. They’re scattered throughout the world and protect Leviathan. We were keeping our heads down once we found the palace but… eventually they were going to find out…. Never thought they had moles in Cassell though.” He stroked my hair. “Never thought that Lavigne… Damn. How could he hide something like that for so long…?”

Robertson returned his thoughts to me. “We’re going to get you out of here. Your injury isn’t bad enough to stop your work. We are going to move you closer to the palace itself in Mumbai.”

I couldn’t believe my ears. “Are you serious?” I whispered, wide eyed.

“No one can do the translation as fast or as accurately as you. You’re the Asset. There is no other.”
