The abbreviation for Western Screech Owls is WESO, aka “Western Screech Owl.”
Now that makes perfect sense given standard naming conventions, but every time I see it my first thought is “Western Eastern Screech Owl”
Which makes considerably less sense but is way funnier

You guys
There is a screech owl in my neighborhood
Tumblr media
(Not my photo, this is from allaboutbirds.org. Great website, by the way!)
Also, fun fact: Screech owls do not screech! They have a softer, trilling hoot. It sound like this.
youtube
If you do hear an owl screeching, it is most likely you heard a barn owl.

Omg I forgot to mention I met an old retired guy who is an avid birder in the cemetery today. He saw me looking in the trees and I'm surprised he approached me because I was really trying to give off don't fuck with me rancid vibes. Personal safety and gender expectations aside he was super nice, talked a lot but specialized in owls! Which is what I was there to see!!!
He literally walked me to THE tree and THE spot with this little tiny mason jar sized western screech owl 🥺 it was everything I ever wanted it was adorable and I guess there's a pair of them. I'm love them.

ok starting this blog off with definitely not my best picture (actually from before I started taking bird pics in general and taken at like 2AM on my phone so sorry it'sbarely discernible lol) but I was desperate to get a shot of this Western-Screech Owl when I saw it! I was taking the dog out and it scared the shit out of me swooping barely above my head on totally silent wings. This was the first and still only time I've been so close with an owl outside of captivity and its aura was awesome

I remember someone said Scorpio Moons tend to look like black panthers? Now I can’t unsee it [western astrology]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I did mention that Scorpio Moons look like owls as well, and owls specifically screeching owls represent Hades who is known as Pluto in Roman Mythology if I’m correct.

OWLan Wake
So, we’ve all noticed the owl symbolism throughout the game, right? Saga’s visions of an owl when Alan’s text is being read, the crow doll "looking like an owl," the poetry talking about an owl, Alice’s shirt -hell, there’s an owl hanging over Alan’s head! He lives in the Parliament (a group of owls) Tower!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three owls. . . hmmm. . .
Alan is represented through an owl, specifically, a great horned owl.
Great horned owls are widespread across North and South America.  They’re a large bird, weighing up to 5 pounds, and are known for their “hooting” calls. Their talons are ridiculously large, comparable in grip strength to much larger birds like the golden eagle. They have asymmetrical ear holes that are designed to locate prey down through triangulation of sound, and their eyes are among the largest of vertebrates. Their feathers are combed so that they can fly silently to avoid alerting prey. They’re predators, and efficient ones at that.
In fact, they have the largest prey diversity among raptors. They’ve been called the “tiger owl” for their propensity for attacking humans and quite grievously injuring them (I actually know this firsthand. Ow. *sob*). Supposedly they’re the only raptor that has been known to kill humans, but all I could find was speculation, so take that with a grain of salt.
Owls in western myth are presented as a symbol of wisdom and prophecy, as their large eyes are said to see through the soul and into the future, and, in Christian society, a harbinger of death and omens. They are said to be connected to both the spiritual and the material world, and guide humans through the underworld. In Greco-Roman mythology, the owl was the symbol for Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare and Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and prophecy (represented by the little owl, Athene Noctua). Notably, an eagle owl, Ascalaphus, was a familiar to Hades, the god of the underworld. Additionally, Lilith, wife to Samael (who was referenced in my post here), name means “screech owl” or “great owl” and is represented by a horned owl, and may be the Mesopotamian goddess of the night.
Most importantly, in my opinion, they are associated most prominently with seers. Back in the days of ‘yore, prophets and seers would use a symbol of an owl to market their skills. They believed they were guided by the all-seeing eye of the owl to relay information to their clients. This has marked owls as demonic familiars to witches.
I think that it would be a crime not to mention Sam Lake's major inspiration, Twin Peaks. Great horned owls are a reoccurring symbol throughout the series.
"The owls are not what they seem."
