Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: The Blue Caftan (2022)
A very recent movie, so if you are lucky, you might still catch it in a cinema. (Time stamp: March 2023)
Tumblr media
(From left to right: Youssef, Mina and Halim, eating together.)
The Blue Caftan is telling the story of a married couple who run a traditional tailor shop in Morocco. The husband, Halim, is gay. At the beginning of the movie, he starts to make a blue caftan for a rich client. Over the time it takes for him to finish, we get to watch the developing feelings between him and his young apprentice, Youssef, as well as the progression of the wife’s, Mina’s, terminal breast cancer.
While the summary does sound a little bleak, this movie is so full of love and tenderness, it seriously softens the pain to something beautiful. While it is made very clear through the acting that Halim is not sexually attracted to his wife, his and Mina’s relationship is very deep and loving. Mina does show some animosity towards Youssef at the beginning, but as her illness progresses, she comes to accept and even appreciate him, so it really is three people who care deeply about one another up against Life. There is also a lot of nonsexual intimacy going on, mostly between Halim and Mina, but also between Halim and Youssef. All in all, it is a very soft, tender movie, that still deals with some very heavy topics.
The Blue Caftan premiered 2022 in Cannes, won multiple prizes at film festivals, and is Morocco’s official submission at the 2023 Oscars shortlist in the "International Feature Film" category.
I can’t really link much about it, but here is the IMBD page.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!

What if reader was dating Rooster and Hannix and she had an incurable illness and it was finally her time. You can decide if she feels ready or not to ‘do the death’. I just need to cry cause most top gun fanfics are fluffy with a happy ending.
A/N: Why is it always when I'm in a good mood I want to write angst the most? But I do love that you said 'do the death' anon, it made me laugh. But I will make this a soulmate au, it's just to add angst. You can truthfully ignore it but I wanted to add pain to the characters. I hope this was sad enough, let me know if you want part 2 with more pain!
Warnings: Death

You laid in your hospital bed, surrounded by flowers and cards. You were looking out the window, knowing your doctor was telling them it wouldn't be much longer. You knew this alread, you could feel the numbness that spread through you, it wasn't from the pain medicine to make you comfortable either.
You were spending every moment you could with them and before you got this bad you did everything you could to make them smile. You left them notes in your dresser drawer for them to find. It was hard to see them struggle with the fact they would lose you, a strong pilot dying of a sickness they couldn't even see. You were the strongest person the three knew and yet you were giving up, all of them tried so hard for you to fight and stay with them.
You closed your eyes, it was a fight to stay this long, you could barely talk and staying awake was a fight. You just didn't want to go while they were in the room. That was the real reason you think you even lasted this long. All you ever heard was how loved you were and how strong you were being, that you could fight this and deny the odds.
Jake, Bradley, and Natasha all came back in. "Hey sweetheart" Natasha said, you opened your eyes again and gave them a weak smile. "We've got to step out for a few more minutes. The doctor wants us to talk in his office but we'll be back soon okay?" She whispered. You gripped her hand and squeezed it, doing the same to Jake and Bradley. "I love you Nat. I love you Jake. And I love you Bradley" you told them, your voice sounding stronger then ever. They all smiled brightly at you, happy to hear you so strong. "We love you too" they all said. You got a sweet and loving kiss from them all before they left.
You knew you were ready to go now and closed your eyes. You fell asleep peacefully and slipped away. They didn't have to see you go and they knew you loved them. You were so at peace with this that you signed a DNR to make sure you wouldn't be brought back this time. Nurses and doctors rushed in as the monitor flat lined and everything beeped rapidly around you but it fell on deaf ears.
In the doctors office, they sat with the doctor as they talked about other possible treatments to help you. Natasha was mid sentence before your name on her wrist burned and scarred over as it blackened. Tears welled up in her eyes "No" she whispered and ran out of the room, Jake and Bradley hot in her heels as they ran to your room.
Nurses were disconnecting the monitors so they wouldn't beep but they could hear the flatline clear as day. They looked at your lifeless body, you had a peaceful look on your face as you looked like you were asleep. You looked like the woman they first met years ago, not the sick one who died slowly in front of them. "I'm sorry Captains Trace, Bradshaw, and Seresin, she passed at 11:34 a.m." a doctor said. "If it is any consolation, Captain L/n felt no pain as she passed" they were told.
The three collapsed next to your bed, holding your hand as they sobbed in pain knowing part of them was gone. Your hand was still warm, it was as if you were still alive and they didn't hear the monitor beep a long tone that everyone dreaded to hear.
They could see you opening your eyes and joking that you didn't die and this whole thing was a joke, that you just wanted to see if they cared. They knew it would never happen. You had been dying slowly in front of their eyes, you had gotten dizzy and then passed out. You went to the doctors and you were diagnosed with an incurable sickness, you could do treatment to relieve it and prolong your life possibly. This one progressed quickly though and you did everything you possibly could but you no longer wanted to fight.
Now they sat there, their hearts feeling like they were being ripped out of their chests. "This isn't fair! Why her!?" They all cried at one point. Each kept a hand on a part of your body as they sobbed. You were too young to die like this, you were a good person and yet you had to die. The world was unfair. Eventually they were forced to let go of your body and you were brought to the morgue.
They went outside to the benches and sat in silence, they knew they had to make phone calls but truthfully they could careless right now, they could only think about your lifeless body. They blamed themselves for not being there but they also knew it's what you wanted. "She was saying goodbye. She knew." Natasha said hollowly. "She didn't want us to see her go" Bradley muttered, all of them watching happy soulmates. A bitterness over took them, you left them alone and now they had to cope.
You were dead and you wouldn't be coming back.
