BBC Merlin and Kinnporsche: My Thesis
Kinn/Arthur was raised as the heir of a powerful dynasty that is a dubiously moral leech on society (thai mob/british monarcy).
Near everyone wants him dead.
Porsche/Merlin is selected by King(pin) Daddy to be Kinn/Arthur's servant. Power dynamics make it very hard to say no.
At first Arthur/Kinn uses the power imbalance to be a raging asshole. He gets better. (ok Arthur struggles with this a bit longer)(but to be fair, outside of fic Arthur is also not getting frequent orgasms from his bodyguard manservant)
Porsche/Merlin never becomes great at his official bodyguard manservant job. Being a manservant wasn't his dream career, it's something that 'happened' to him. Stays disrespectful, sassy forever. A survivor who retains an assertive personality & won't bow by route to hierarchy.
Kinn/Arthur would obviously be happier and more well adjusted if he could abandon what he has been raised to see as his "birthright" and live like a normal commoner, but in canon it's too central to his identity for him to leave it all behind.
For Arthur/Kinn, part of pull of Merlin/Porsche is in how he demonstrates & encourages the possibility of embracing levity, unfiltered thought & body, personal expression even when living a life of duty. With Merlin/Porsche beside him, he can uphold his responsibilies but not have to coldly perform every aspect of his life. The prospect of trust & loyalty with someone whom you can be imperfect & impulsive with.
Merlin and Porsche ultimately get caught up in the cycle of violence inherent in the Pendragon/Theerapanyakun dynasty and end up with blood on their hands. After developing an emotional connection to the heir, they resign themselves to the practice of killing the enemies of the royal family.
Porsche/Merlin is Destined to be Arthur/Kinn's #2 - at end of arc, grows into being his "right hand" and most trusted person.
There is a whole segment of fanfic where Merlin/Porsche (1) never gets hooked into being a lacky of the mob/monarchy OR (2) he breaks away mid-canon to have a separate life away from serving the royal family.
Major flashback past reveal is about one of their moms, a secret King(pin) Daddy was keeping from them
Ultimate big bad showdown is between family. (Gun/Vegas, Morgana) Beloved minor charcters bite it in the chaos.
King(pin) Daddy does sketchy shit because of powerplays & personal obsessions that get people killed.
King(pin) Daddy tried to murder & exiled Merlin's dad/at min an accessory to the murder to Porsche's dad.
Porsche and Merlin figure out the dad is trash but ultimately don't have the heart to kill him and would never be able to ask his son to do it. Strategy: wait for the old man to die
Tumblr media
HOWEVER. KP:ts did not kill Kinn on Christmas. So they are actually completely different.

Low-Rise Jeans Are Officially Back. Who Will Be Wearing Them?
Tumblr media
Y2K fashion is back. From whale tails and trucker hats to platform flip-flops and bedazzled Bebe tops, every kitschy trend from the early noughties is making its way out of the archives and onto TikTok. But while some resurrected looks have received a warm welcome — who doesn’t love a baby tee? — others are setting off alarms and adamant nopes. Case in point: the return of the low-rise jean.
It started with models like Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid, whose wardrobes this year have become time-travel machines to Y2K, be it via low-rise Von Dutch cargo trousers or colourful candy rings. Then Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner wore a pair of low-rise baggy jeans, which she paired with another ’00s relic — a going-out top — for date night with Joe Jonas. Pretty soon, the silhouette was making the rounds on TikTok, where the tag #LowRiseJeans has over 43.6 million views.
Still, many hoped the murmurings of a low-rise jean reunion tour would not prove prophetic. According to Stephanie Valponi, a stylist at Stitch Fix, that isn’t the case, though. “We’ve heard rumours over the last few years that low-rise jeans would be making an inevitable comeback, but now, it’s safe to say these are rumours no more,” Valponi tells Refinery29.

And there’s data to prove it. In May, thredUP, an online consignment and thrift store, reported a 50% increase in search for low-rise jeans, compared to the time frame between January and March of 2021. “Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that more people are trying out low-rise denim again,” Kesha Linder, a merchandiser at the online retailer, tells Refinery29.
Even so, many women who can recall the last heyday of low-rise jeans — when zippers regularly measured under three inches and necessitated embracing a peek-a-boo G-string (thus the whale tail trend) or spending a majority of the time hiking jeans up — aren’t excited. “I was in college in the early ‘00s, and I think I still have PTSD from my low-rise Juicy Couture sweats and my two-inch-zipper Diesel and Chip & Pepper jeans,” Pauline Montupet, 39, the founder of San Francisco-based clothing shop Le Point, tells Refinery29. “There was a constant feeling of being too big for low-rise pants,” she explains, adding that her stomach was never flat enough or her hip bones prominent enough, in comparison to celebrities (Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, etc.) who would frequently wear the trend on the red carpet and at parties. “Only very thin people didn’t have a muffin top while wearing super low-rise jeans, so I constantly felt that I was in a losing battle between my body and low-rise denim.”
There’s an excerpt of Everybody (Else) in @InStyle! It’s about low-rise jeans, what we teach girls about their bodies, and trying to find your gay self amidst Bush-era politics and a hyper-sexualized pop culture that doesn’t really leave room you. https://t.co/xPAdkEoxjF

Former Refinery29 fashion director Gabrielle Korn wrote an entire chapter about the effect low-rise jeans had on her mental and physical health in her book of personal essays, Everybody (Else) Is Perfect. In it, she discusses her constant urge to cover up her love handles during high school in 2003, so much so that her belt loops were often ripped off from so much pant tugging.
Others, like Rachel Jones, 33, the founder of underwear brand Jonesy, are happy to give the once-shunned silhouette another whirl. Despite her initial shock at finding out that the denim style was having a resurgence — “my hips haven’t seen the light of day since 2004,” she tells Refinery29 — Jones says she now sees the 2021 version of low-rise jeans “fresh and exciting,” compared to the rotation of high-waisted trousers she’s been wearing for a near-decade. Today’s low-rise jeans have evolved, and don’t feature ultra-tight fits, barely-there zippers, or thong-baring backsides like they once did. Instead, the trend is mostly made up of baggier jeans and trousers that naturally sit low on the waist — no tugging, sucking in, or awkward pretzeling of limbs required.

In fact, it was right after giving birth that Jones says she started eyeing denim with a lower rise. “My body was still changing, and I was drawn to a more undone look,” she says. “I didn’t want pants or jeans to suck me in. I wanted something low and loose, and a pair of vintage low-rise jeans from Etsy scratched that itch for me.”
This renaissance of low-rise jeans has yet to be picked up by a bevy of brands, but a select few have become frontrunners, creating a more comfortable version of the denim we love to hate. Los Angeles-based brand Miaou, which was founded as a denim brand but has since become known for its patterned corsets, is currently carrying baggier cargos and ‘00s-inspired low-rise styles. Ragged Priest, which makes “regular jeans for irregular people,” according to its website, is also dabbling in the throwback silhouette, as is Miss Sixty, the favoured denim brand of celebrities in the noughties that has been making a comeback recently.
Tumblr media
As more and more brands catch on, a contingent of fans are celebrating: the small but passionate circle of people who never got rid of their low-rise jeans in the first place. “Low-rise jeans accentuate my hips and butt in a way that high-waisted jeans simply do not,” says New York-based style journalist Lee Phillips, 24. “For me, this is not really even a trend — low-rise jeans are literally the only jeans I’ll wear.” Fashion designer Zoé Martin, 25, also sees the skimpy style as her end-all-be-all: “I am very much pro-low-rise jeans,” she says. According to Martin, whose fashion brand O’Dolly Dearest is dedicated to the ‘90s and early ‘00s, low-rise jeans are effortlessly sexy, especially when paired with aughts-era accessories like waist beads and thongs. She says that low-rise jeans have always been a staple in her wardrobe because of the way they fit her body.
Martin concedes that the low-rise jeans of the past had their problems and hopes that with this second wave of popularity, brands will rework the style to better fit a larger range of women. “I’m eager to see how retailers will make them more modern and flattering for different body types,” she says.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

So. UWMA is over. I... don’t know what to do with myself now. This episode was almost overfull with emotional punches and it’ll take me a while to work it all out in my head, I think. Let’s put my immediate thoughts behind a spoiler cut, though.
The funeral. It kind of sits wrong with me that the focus was so strongly on the dads (particularly Intouch’s) and their regrets. These two men abused their sons, Korn’s until he was literally suicidal. (I think Intouch’s despair was more of a spur-of-the-moment overwhelmed-by-pain reaction, unlike Korn’s years of suffering.) Still, the moment with An and Alin made me sniffle, as did seeing Krit fall apart afterwards in the darkness.
As much as it hurt, I liked the extended scene in Korn and In’s condo, that we saw more of Pharm’s reactions before last week’s cliffhanger moment. (Interesting that this had to be censored on Line TV with what I assume is a warning text on screen.) Fluke deserves all the awards. Dean apologising makes sense, he’s been feeling guilty ever since he found out, but once again I didn’t think Korn’s father deserved it. It should have been directed solely at Krit and Pharm/Intouch. Maybe it’s a cultural thing, though, respect for your elders much more ingrained.
I feel as if there was something missing between the condo and the hospital. Specifically, we never saw Pharm’s reunion with his mom and brother. They didn’t even get a single speaking line.
Pharm’s nightmare. I should have known Dean wouldn’t be the one to break things off, because he’s always been the one completely and absolutely certain of his feelings for Pharm. Pharm on the other hand has been struggling much more, and I do understand why he asked for a break to re-evaluate their relationship while Dean just wanted to return to normal. That doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt to watch.
(Btw, tv writers take note, this is how you write conflict with an established couple - no stupid jealousy plots or misunderstandings, but problems that arise organically from the situation and the character of the people in the relationship.)
That “3 months later” hit me surprisingly hard. I just didn’t want to imagine them spending such a long time apart. Even if we learn that they didn’t officially break up and have been texting and leaving each other messages/passing food along, the idea of them not spending any time together was physically painful for me. I might be unhealthily attached to this pairing, what did you expect.
Having said that, I was glad that they showed Pharm having good times with his friends, even as he misses Dean. That’s how it should be, one’s happiness should never be wrapped up in a single person. (I think Dean, on the other hand, probably retreated back into his shell - he’s always been a much more solitary person. At least in addition to Win he now also has his siblings. And I must believe that he never doubted that Pharm would return to him.)
In between, there were some incredibly adorable moments with the trio, and of course I almost died over the Win x Team scene. Win is so utterly and completely smitten, and Team’s eagerness to get to know him better (outside of the bedroom *g*) was too cute for words. These two better get their own series, I need to know everything that happened behind the scenes! :) And Pharm teasing Team about his movie date with Win was glorious. I got the distinct feeling that Team was about to ‘fess up when Manaow interrupted.
Manaow and Pruk got short shrift, but the three scenes they shared over the series were cute. If there is a Hemp Rope season, I hope we’ll see more of them, too. I’d also have liked to see Del and Don again. A pity that they didn’t even get a cameo in the last episode, just the mention that Del is now with Alex. Honestly, with how little time was spent on the het ships, I feel like we got more set up for Manaow x Del than either of them.
But obviously, the entire series belongs to DeanPharm (and KornIn). That last dream with Korn and In taking their leave, Pharm racing out the door in his pajamas and running straight into Dean... everything about that final part was wonderful, my heart almost couldn’t take it. They have the best hugs, and Dean lifting Pharm up... *chef’s kiss* (Also, once again, the sheer size of Ohm, especially his hands, in comparison to tiny Fluke did things to me.) Not to speak of the ring. Dean remains the world’s best boyfriend - or is it fiancé now? - and I will miss him so very much.
I loved this show. I know not everyone did, and that’s fair enough, but I adored it. It felt gentle and warm, despite the tragedy of Korn and In’s story, and it did very little wrong. Do I wish we’d gotten more Win x Team instead of having to hope for a Hemp Rope season? Of course. But then the friendships and family relationships might have gotten less screen time, which would have been a pity.
And Dean x Pharm will forever have a spot very high up on my list of couples.

Senses Fail 'From The Depths Of Dreams' Tour wsg Hot Mulligan and Yours Truly
It's unbelievably hard not to gawk at the photo behind the bar. A young Chris Cornell performing at St Andrews Hall damn near 30 years ago. I swiftly order a Dirty Blonde tallboy and down it in the 6 minutes before Yours Truly come on the stage at 8pm.
Yours Truly are fixated on how Americans say "Mother Fucker" as if their accent is anymore normal than ours. I love it. I fucking love anyone who understands there's so much more to us here than just being Trumpets and complete pieces of shit. We also say "Mother Fucker" better than anyone.
Yours Truly are reminiscent of early Paramore but I'm positive every band that is remotely close to pop-punk with a female falsetto vocalist get that comparison. Musically I feel it in my chest. Visually its stimulating as all members who are standing can't help but move on and feel their own music, I'm guessing in their chests also. High kicks inspired by I'm guessing by their parent’s desire for David Lee Roth in Van Halen videos.
This is a great band with great songs. Funny banter in-between songs help elevate them also. Definitely something down under that is giving way for an absolute shit-ton of Aussie bands making their way to America over the last few years.
Who ever is running the music in between bands need a fucking award. Underoath. TBS. Deftones. Thursday. My Chemical Romance. Oh man, MCR. I'm Not Okay is asking for it. Screaming emo kids scratch that drunk emo adults. Oh boy. They're gonna let this play out...
Hot Mulligan are Michigan natives that play a blend of math rock, post-hardcore, pop-punk, and emo rolled into one creative package. This is the kind of band that once you see them, you're addicted. I can feel them coursing through my veins already.
Their set elevated the crowd participation drastically as security has had their hands full in the front row catching crowd surfers. This shit reminds me of the late days of hall shows here in the Detroit area. Plenty of VFWs, polish halls, and of course UAW halls that I cut my teeth at. It’s easily the soundtrack to an Alpha Emo doob cruise out in the country. Chances are, I'm riding home and ripping a number listening to this shit. Now I have to go through their catalog. Good thing I can take the long way home and blare this shit. At the very least Hot Mulligan gained a middle-aged fan out of my stoned ass.
Back on that house music tip, more Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Korn, Rage Against The Machine and more, seriously… award.
Senses Fail are titans in Emo and Screamo. This is a band that literally started from that hall show era and made a fucking career out of it. Buddy has been a steadfast leader of righteousness in change over the years. Opening up about so much of his personal life to let more people in and to show that we're all flawed in many ways and there is nothing wrong about that. Even going as far as rerecording their first EP, cutting "Bastard Son" and changing words out like "whore" and "bitch". Flat out not what I would do at all.
I think teen angst is a beautiful thing. I understand the misogyny issues here with their old stuff. I also don't hold everyone to a high as fuck standard just because righteousness is in. I love that they did this, but I think what the Descendants have done for years is better. Which is admitting that these songs were written in a different time by different feeling human beings. And for that changed the lyrics to songs that were written when they were in high school and still stand the test of time even though blatantly immature. I get what they did and why they did it.
I'm by no means trying to criticize their intentions or decision to do so. Emo during that era of time was very anti ex gf not anti-woman and that shit got so fucking twisted in the years since. Its actually more anti-ex-significant other just depends on who is listening. Speaking of, maybe not a good idea to play "Misery Business" by Paramore right before Senses Fail comes on. I mean this is a song they stopped playing all together too. Senses Fail are in perfect form. This might not even be remotely close to the original lineup but this is the best you’re going to hear this band play. Absolutely on point, heavy when they need to be, 3 acoustic songs in the middle of the set to warm your broken blackened hearts. I could not be happier to be here.
