Breakdown: Remote - Wallows

Virtual Aerobics: the talking stage

it’s awkward and all you want to do is impress the other. early one, the line “wanna dress in what makes you like me,” makes this pretty obvious. dressing up in clothes that you think they’ll like in order to get them to like you.

personally, verse 2 is really the cheery on top of this song. its the switch within the song where he starts to go beyond just impressing someone.

Dig What You Dug: trying to fit in

off the bat, braeden hits you with “you never wanted all the friends you’ve got, turned into someone that you know you’re not.” the stage is set, aka, we immediately know the purpose/‘backstory’ of the song(wanting to fit in).

best line: And thats okay ‘cause they’re still finding a god

Nobody Gets Me (Like You): only liking the idea of someone

“i need a girl like you [….] ‘cause nobody gets me like you.” LIKE YOU, he doesnt necessarily need her, he just want someone similar. a lot of people do this, especially if they like someone they know they can’t have (out of their league or even fictional).

when bringing the music video into the picture, its also reasonable to think of it as him wants someone just like him. instead of having a girl, or really anyone else play his love intrest, wallows have braeden play his crush. so, he ends up singing to someone that is exactly like him about how much he likes them…he’s in love with himself and thinks no one will really get him.

Coastlines: long distance relationships

the entire focus of coastlines is the struggles of long distance relationships. a lot of the issues seem to be rooted in it being hard to express what you’re feeling and doubting each other.

Talk Like That: reading too much into things, especially over text

like coastlines, talk like that has a very prominate theme, in this case its overthinking. the narrator, or dylan, is worried about what their true intentions are. nonetheless, with all those anxieties, he still wants to be in this relationship.

Wish Me Luck: talking about feelings

“i dont wanna lose myself to all my insecurities, if i told you all of them, who would it hurt more, you or me?”

the idea is that he doesnt want to face his emotions, especially with someone else. having started the relationship without getting too deep or emotional, dylan wishes to go back to how it was in the beginning. “who would it hurt more, you or me?” gives light to the concern that whomever you are talking to might think all you anxieties are becasue of them. or that it might just simply hurt himself to talk about it.

during the bridge, “holdin’ back” is repeated four times and gives emphasis to hm not wanting to reveal his emotions.

“i’ll be fine if we turn out the lights” is very similar to scrawnys’ lyric, “i’ve been sleeping with the lights on, i tend to freak myself out.” both songs involve not liking change and for wish me luck, he doesnt want their relationship to be the thing that changes.

i made wallows bracelets!! :D

the ends are super messy but the elastic i have isn't great so i've had to knot them sm times to make sure they'll hold 😭

• the 'wallows' bracelet is inspired by one they have for sale as merch - i used the same colours & pattern but added the smiley faces myself (and put actual capital Ls instead of trying to pass off capital Is as lowercase Ls which really annoyed me about the official ones 😭)

• i made the wish me luck bracelet because i have big exams coming up in about 3 days (!!!!) and i thought it would be a funny little thing to wear in exams lol - the colours are inspired by the cover of remote - mostly black with a rectangle of brighter colours.

i'm going to make more wallows bracelets at some point (and i'll post pics!) but for now i'm going to make some for friends and maybe for some other stuff i like as well :)
