An appropriately-plated Swedish delight from this weekend’s #RadwoodNJ event - a #Volvo740GLE Turbo. It’s #hiptobesquare profile looks sharp to this day and these cars were the epitome of “boxy Volvos,” but the Volvo 700 series didn’t get off an easy start. Development (at first coded NV80/81) began in 1975 at a tough time for #Volvo. The DAF acquisition and the Volvo 340’s slow start were costly and U.S. sales slumped badly in 1976-77 - leaving Volvo overstocked and ending plans for a Virginia factory as well as scuttling a proposed merger with Saab. - The 700 didn’t arrive for 7 years because circumstances, and therefore plans for the car, kept changing during the development phase. The goal was a more premium car than the 200, but of similar size and using existing powertrains (for cost). The name became “P31” and later “1155” in 1978 - a name derived from the doomsday clock since it was unsure if the car would be produced. At one point, Volvo wanted to abandon 1155 for a smaller car to slot between the 340 and 200 (the 1980s 400-series) but 1155 went on sale in February of 1982 as the 760. - After 15 years without a brand new design, the 700 was radical but like all things Volvo evolutionary. Debuting as the #Volvo760, the early cars used a PRV V6 or TD I-6. At first criticized for appearing and feeling “too American,” Jan Wilsgaard’s angular lines looked a little like a GM car from a distance, and it looked low, long and wide but was actually no bigger than the 240. Roomy, comfy, and built like a bank vault, the cars exuded quality inside and out, but the early 760 was criticized for being slow and soft. - That was remedied by the arrival of the 740 in 1984 (using power from Volvo’s four-cylinder family) and available Turbo engines. Suddenly the car was fast and supple. Not all 740s were turbos, but the very good fours were as capable as the 760s so-so sixes. The 740 arrived in the U.S. as a 1985 model, and did not have these headlights (U.S. cars had sealed beams). The 700 was a typically long-lived Volvo, surviving as the 900 and later S90/V90 into 1998. Early 740s are rare now, and this one looks every inch like it just stepped out of the late 1980s. EURO2 für alte Bricks      

Zum 01.01.2005 wurde die KFZ-Steuer für Fahrzeuge mit Otto-Motor der Schadstoffeinstufung EURO1 von 10,84 EUR auf 15,13 EUR pro angefangene 100 ccm erhöht. Für einen Volvo 740 mit B230F-Motor sind nun über 360,- EUR KFZ-Steuer pro Jahr, anstatt ca. 170,- EUR mit EURO2-Einstufung, fällig.        

Hierzu die EURO1-Schlüsselnummern (und vergleichbare) im KFZ-Schein (Zu I, die beiden letzten Ziffern): 01, 02, 03, 09, 11-14, 16, 18, 21, 22, 28, 29, 34, 77    

Hinweis: E2 in den Fahrzeugpapieren bedeutet nicht EURO2, sondern EURO1!

Diese Modelle der 7/9er Reihe erfüllen ab Werk die EURO2-Norm:

   alle 940 Benziner (B230FT, B230FK,...) ab Modelljahr 1995

   alle 960 (B6304,...) ab Modelljahr 1995

   alle S/V90

   US-Versionen der 7/9er Reihe ab ca. Ende der 1980er Jahre, da mit einer Abgasrückführung ausgestattet.

       Falls die EURO2-Norm bei diesen Modellen noch nicht in den Papieren eingetragen sein sollte, lässt sich das mit einer Bescheinigung von Volvo Deutschland bei der Zulassungsstelle nachholen.            

Folgende Modelle der 7/9er Reihe können zur Zeit mit einem Umrüstsatz auf EURO2 umgerüstet werden:

   740/940 mit B230F-Motor (2.3l, ca. 115PS) und Schaltgetriebe

   940 mit B230FB (2.3l, 131PS) und Schaltgetriebe

740/760/940 Turbobenziner mit Schaltgetriebe bis MJ1994 (B230FT: 2,3l, 121kW/165PS)
