Week Four|Research|Photography

Xenie Zasetskaya is a photographer based in Moscow. Her work often explores space, light and various optical techniques, and she is adept at capturing moments artistically, thus creating images that blend photography and art.

This photograph uses diffuse lighting to envelop the subject in a soft and ethereal halo of light. The strong backlighting coming from behind scatters the light and enhances the ethereal feel of the image. The photo gives an interplay of light, shadow and fog.

The soft light in this photograph highlights the serene expression of the subject and the peaceful surroundings. Creating a connection to nature, the use of water adds a layer of texture and depth to the image, and the reflections and ripples create an overall serene and ethereal atmosphere.

“[...] Em 2012 comecei a cobrir utensílios domésticos comuns a partir dos anos 70, como aspirador de pó, máquina de costura, batedeira etc. Acho interessante ver como esses objetos se transformam em um novo contexto; o obsoleto, as coisas que não queremos mais, as coisas velhas e esquecidas. Eles se tornam artefatos de uma época passada, disfarçados, camuflados e vestidos. Dou-lhes uma segunda vida e embora corte os bordados em pedaços, acho que ficam muito bonitos, depois de “vestidos”. Visito mercados de pulgas e lojas vintage para encontrar bordados em ponto cruz e os objetos com que quero trabalhar. Alguns dos pequenos objetos, como um ferro ou um telefone, levam um ou dois dias para fazer, mas as instalações maiores levam semanas para terminar. [...]”

“[…] In 2012 I started to cover ordinary household items from the 70s, like a vacuum cleaner, sewing machine, electric mixer etc. I find it interesting to see how these objects transforms in a new context; the obsolet, the things we do not want any longer, the old and forgotten things. They become artifacts from a begone era, disguised, camouflaged and dressed. I give them a second life and although I cut the embroideries into pieces, I think they look very beautiful, when they have been ”dressed up”. I visit flea markets and vintage stores to find cross stitch embroidery and the objects I want to work with. Some of the small objects, like an iron or a phone take me a day or two to make, but the bigger installations takes weeks to finish. […]”
