I finally decided to lace a Sun CR18 to the Sturmey Archer 36 hole 1956 AW three speed shell. This has been a back burner project for a few years. I found the 1952 AM on ebay with its cracked aluminum shell. The 52 AM guts or internal parts,, were installed in the 1949 AM shell and rode quite a few times. The 52 guts vs the 49 guts? Well the 52 guts made less noise, but really the 49 worked fine before. The 1952 AM guts will now reside in the 56 AW shell instead of the 1949 AM shell. I just prefer 36 spokes vs the 32 that I laced in the 40 hole AM shell. I unlaced the 1949 AM shell and now the 49 AM guts will live inside its original home again. Surmey Archer AM hubs are very hard to find. I laced one of my old Suntour coaster brake hubs to a Sun CR18 rim so I have rain and snow proof rear braking. Remember when I broke the driver on this 1981 Shimano DX hub? Well I found a road bike uniglide free hub that has the same press on flange setup, but with a 6 speed uniglide body. I ground the body down to be more of a 5 speed size and still have the lockcog threads. The threads can use a normal English thread lockring instead of the snapring the shimano DX body had. #shimano #shimanodx #vintagehub #vintageshimano
