I spied this vintage Marantz 2245 stereo receiver this morning at a garage sale covered in dust and asked nicely if they would be interested in selling it. $30 later I am lugging this 35 pound solid state beast to my car. The Sony SS-GR1. This speaker was a culmination of all of Sony’s innovations and experience into one, what that gives you is a massive and refined reference speaker. Starting from the top down, the super tweeter features a bio-cellulose diaphragm. A Sony staple at the time, bio cellulose is an extremely thin material with excellent stiffness. It is also technically superior to even beryllium! The tweeter and horn midrange feature a silicon carbide construction. That’s not where it ends, the horns use a constant directivity design which are actually carved into the cabinet itself. This design was meant to reduce outward pressure and listening room reflections. Sony did not cut corners when it came to this speakers design. All of this attention to detail produces a reference quality speaker that is truly cost-no-object piece of equipment. The retail price of the Sony SS-GR1? ¥2,200,000. Highly expensive and unimaginably rare. This was a true testament to what Sony could achieve, a beautifully crafted loudspeaker that was breaking the boundaries with material and craftsmanship. It took the Sony engineers four years to finish the Sony GR-1. But all that hard work paid off as it won the most coveted award, the Golden sound coty award. The highest award in Japan.
