"Mary...?" You stopped in your tracks to stare into the classroom after you recognized the blonde. She was currently under a desk.
"Huh?--Ow!" Her head bumped against the desk as she crawled back out. She readjusted her cap and looked towards the classroom entrance where she heard the voice. Her eyes widened once she saw you, and a big smile made its way onto her lips. "Hey! What're you doing around so late?"
You smiled a little yourself at her charm. "It's not that late. I just stayed behind to help the Architecture Department with some stuff. What were you doing, though?"
Mary sighed, laughing a bit. "I, uh. Dropped my eraser." She pointed at Vin Jin in the corner, who you didn't even notice with how unusally quiet he was. He was currently staring out the window, seated and leaning back on a chair with his legs kicked up on a desk. "This asshole's not helping so I've just been trying find my eraser for the past few minutes alone."
Vin Jin turned his head at the mention of him. When he seemed to see you, he just put on a stupid grin and waved. "Yo. You Mary's pal? I think I'm starting to recognize you from your voice alone 'cause you're always going, 'MARY!!'" He changed the pitch of his voice to better match yours at the end. Unsurprisingly, it wasn't accurate.
"Ignore him," Mary said quietly, an apologetic look on her face as Vin Jin cackled in the background.
Your face warmed up but you just grimaced and tried to ignore it. You put your focus on Mary instead. "Why don't you get a new eraser?"
"I would've, but the eraser I dropped was new..." Her gaze moved to the floor. "I don't wanna have it go to waste." She crouched down and was beginning to look under desks again. "It's like the size of my thumb, I don't know how I could've possibly lost it."
"I'll help!" you exclaimed, properly entering the classroom and joining her in the crouching.
"Really?" She brightened up at your offer. "Thanks, but you don't have to."
"You're my friend, Mary, how could I not?"
The second your response left your mouth, there was a tinge of bitterness felt by you and Mary at the same time. Not that either of you knew the other felt it.
Vin Jin did notice, though. And if Mary wasn't his best friend he would've said something, but because she was, he only made a whistling sound.
She threw him a warning glance anyway before plastering on a smile for you. "Yeah, uh, thanks! Let's find that eraser."
You nodded, also plastering a smile on your face.
~
"Damn, y'all still looking?"
Mary rolled her eyes. "Vin, it's been like two minutes."
"That's a lot of fucking time!" Vin Jin properly set his chair back down and then stood up. "I'm outta here, Mary."
"Then leave, you weren't helping anyway," Mary said, Vin Jin scoffing as if she was ungrateful for something.
"Whatever. See ya, losers--UGH!" On his way out, Vin Jin bumped into a desk, somehow nearly knocking himself and the desk down. He managed to regain his balance and grab the desk before it fell. Mary burst into laughter at the sight with you chuckling along. Vin Jin sent glares towards you both. "Hey, it wasn't THAT funny!"
"Yeah it was!" Mary was still cracking up and Vin Jin actually looked a little embarrassed.
While you were laughing, you noticed something suspiciously eraser colored peek out of the pocket from Vin Jin's hoodie. "Hey, what's that in your pocket?" You pointed.
He looked from his pocket to you before giving you a look like you were dumb. "Uh, my eraser, duh."
Mary narrowed her brows and put a hand out. "Hey. Let me see it real quick."
Now Vin Jin just looked offended at being accused. "It's my eraser! I wouldn't steal from you, I know how scary you are firsthand."
"Give it!"
"Alright, jeez!" Vin Jin tossed said eraser at Mary.
When she caught it, you scooted closer to peer over her shoulder. She flipped the eraser and it revealed to have her name etched on the back. You couldn't help but laugh a little while Mary deadpanned. She held up the eraser to Vin Jin.
"So much for your eraser, huh."
His jaw dropped. "W-well!" he sputtered, "You can't blame me! Who the hell even picks up erasers and goes, 'Oh, let me check both sides in case someone wrote their name on the other side!'"
Mary began to stand up, a rather threatening aura coming from her. "So did you steal it or no?"
"I dropped my eraser, too! I just thought--" Vin Jin paused. "Wait, if I picked up your eraser then... where's my eraser?"
"That's your problem now." Mary gave him a grin and Vin Jin groaned.
You just smiled and stood up to join them, dusting yourself off. "Mystery solved, right?"
Mary turned to you, giving you an elbow bump. "You bet. Thanks for helping, even if we kinda did all that looking around for nothing."
"Of course--!"
Vin Jin interrupted with, "Hey, now you two have to help me look for my eraser--" but Mary was quick to also interrupt him with a firm, "Nope!"
"The hell you mean 'nope?!'"
Mary gave Vin Jin a playful wink before grabbing your hand and beginning to run off. Caught in the moment, you just went along with it and ran off with her. The melody of your combined laughter with hers filled the empty halls.
Once you were both outside, Mary finally stopped to take a breather. You were both still laughing lightly at the sudden escape.
"Is--Is Vin Jin going to be okay?" You asked between huffs, "I remember him saying his sunglasses make it hard for him to see sometimes."
"He'll be fine. I'll go back to get him." Mary cleared her throat. "Eventually." She laughed again before growing sheepish and looking into your eyes with a sincere smile. "I just wanted to get a quick moment alone with you."
"O-oh." The stutter that unintentionally came out made you want to bite your tongue off.
"I wanted to say thanks, but more sincerely." The way her tone softened gave you butterflies. "I know it's kinda weird to say this after you did something as simple as helping me find an eraser, but all your nice favors stack up, you know?"
You wondered where she was going with this.
"So... I feel like I owe you something. We haven't properly hung out in a while, right? Maybe this Saturday we could drop by an arcade or something."
Ah.
Well.
A love confession was only your second guess. You were more than happy to be invited to hang out somewhere by your crush anyways.
"Sure, Mary!" you beamed at her, adoring the way her eyes sparkled at your acceptance.
"Great! I'll text you about this later. Gotta go back to Vin Jin in case he causes trouble." She chuckled at her last statement and then moved her gaze downwards towards your hands, still held together. She stared for a moment before turning a little red and slowly letting go. As her fingertips brushed away from yours, she said, "Get home safe!" before turning back to head into the school.
"You too!" you replied, smiling when she looked back at you to give you a grin and nod of acknowledgement.
~
"You're a bitch for leaving me in that classroom."
Mary laughed as Vin Jin gave her a light shove by bumping into her as they walked down the hall. She gave him a light shove back, saying, "My bad. At least we got your dumbass eraser back."
"Yeah, yeah." He huffed and shoved his hands down his pockets. "By the way."
"Hm?"
"When are you gonna marry that fucker?"
Mary squinted her eyes. "Who?"
"Your little friend."
Blush entered Mary's cheeks which greatly amused Vin Jin. She just sighed heavily, thinking about your adorable face and the upcoming impromptu hangout. "It's... in my future plans."
Vin Jin stopped in tracks. "AYO?!"
"I'll get around to it once I ask them out some day." Mary continued walking, although it was really just a way for her to walk off her feelings of embarrassment. "Also, don't call them 'fucker.'"
Her friend caught up with her, using a hand to gesture vaguely as he spoke. "I said it in an UH-ffectionate way. It's a compliment."
He received a kick in the leg for the response. "I'm not inviting you to my wedding."
"WHA--WHO ELSE IS GONNA BE YOUR BEST MAN?!"
