VASILISA, 2019
My old posts (dating back to college, yikes) should all be cleaned up now. Time to add in art I’ve made in the past. You can read more about my process behind this piece and see a process video here in The Archive.

My drawing of Vasilisa The Beautiful for the final day of Folktale Week! I made it just in time ✨ For “Found”, I decided to depict the scene where Vasilisa has just been gifted the boon of light by Baba Yaga for completing all of her tasks, and with burning skull-staff in hand, Vasilisa quickly and easily finds her way home through the dark forest. I decided to try my hand at a different sort of fairy tale/illustration style for this drawing, and it was fun, but also challenging. I’ve been asked many times over the years to draw Vasilisa, and I’m glad I finally got the chance to!

ROUND 1A, MATCH 3 OUT OF 16!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Includes Grimm Brothers and Charles Perrault tales.
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Cinderella / Aschenputtel / Cendrillon:
I love all Cinderellas but the Grimm version refocuses the story away from magical aid and transforms it into a story of the ability of grief to conversely power hope. ashenputtel weeps over the grave of her dead mother so much a beautiful tree grows out,  with the voice of her mother guiding her and giving her the gown and shoes that ultimately get her to the ball. It turns Cinderella from a kind of passive receiver to a woman whose own love, in a way, saves her—her grief cycles into new joys, her love for the dead changes her for a new life. Idk it’s just a tremendously hopeful, haunting story, grounded in sorrow and love as our ways of guiding into the future.
Her slippers aren't made of glass, thankfully. Also, her step-sisters are blinded by birds who like Cinderella, apparently, on the day of the wedding. (I had to check this, as I knew the sisters had parts of their feet cut off to fit the shoe, but I was sure the mother had something bad happen, but there was no mention of a comeuppance for her. I found it on grimmstories.com, so I'm not sure how accurate to the original it is.)
Vasilisa the Beautiful:
Vasilisa is my favorite of the Cinderella-type fairytales in the world. Full stop. It's just so magical and makes me so emotional. Plus, the art out it out there is beautiful!

Monster Girl October (tarot deck) day 22: Baba Yaga from Russian fairytales as The Hierophant card!
The Hierophant is an educator and dispenser of wisdom and guidance. Although a child-eating witch, many fairytales featuring Baba Yaga show her challenges and tests as a method that forces the (mostly female) protagonists to grow from children to adults, allowing them to return home more mature and powerful than before. This is most obvious in the tale of Vasilisa the Fair who comes back from Baba Yaga's hut with a stepmother-vaporizing skull lantern!
(P.S. I mentioned before that Margarita is best witch, but Baba Yaga is also best witch)

I see a ttrpg and go "is anyone going to play a bad mother?" and then don't even wait for a response.
Anyway. Vasilisa and Maudlin are on opposite ends of the bad mom spectrum and I'm so proud of them both. AND they both have great outfits

Page of Wands. Art by Nara Lesser, from Neurotic Owl’s Faerytale Tarot.
Anyway, Page of Wands/Vasilisa the Beautiful.  There’s a good retelling here so I’m not going to worry about retelling the whole thing.  But basically we’re back to Baba Yaga/evil stepmother stories, and in this case her wand is the magical wooden doll that Vasilisa’s mother gave her before she died, which gets her through all of the tasks the terrifying Baba Yaga imposes.  In the end she’s sent back to her house with a skull full of coals (she was sent to ask for a light originally).  The skull then proceeds to BURN HER STEPMOTHER AND STEPSISTERS ALIVE SLOWLY OVER THE COURSE OF THE NIGHT.  To her credit, Vasilisa does not decided to stay in the house where they died horribly and heads off to further adventures but yowza.  Fairytales, amiright?
