The media is an invasive and unkind thing, sometimes. Too many people learned that the hard way, their secrets splashed out over front pages of magazines and blogs as if there aren’t lives behind the names. Gregory Gerwitz (III) already knew all of that. He’d grown up in the kind of society that tore people apart and sold the pieces to the media, married someone else who had grown up the same way, established a life and a failed legacy firmly in the middle of all of it. He thought he was untouchable - and then they turned against him.

Word of his affairs were in every news notification on his phone, and the newsstand outside his office, and came up at every dinner party. Then the word divorce was thrown around, and the media jumped on that, too. One of the most powerful men in Chicago was crumbling, and everyone wanted a front row seat.

Then his publicist suggested using those affairs to his advantage. There were a handful of children - adults, really - within the city who shared his blood, who were products of the affairs that had made so much news. If he claimed one, just one of them as his own flesh and blood, the narrative could be twisted. He could step up and show the city and the media that the affairs weren’t the frivolous things they all thought they were. He was a man devoted to family, with the endgame of getting the idea of a divorce out of Thelma’s mind. And the route to that was easy enough.

Gregory did his research, looked through the profiles dug up by his assistant, inspected every option he had, and there was a perfect one. A police officer, praised for her selflessness in the line of duty, multiple small articles about her work and the child she’d adopted and anything else the city might want to know about a public servant. Of the options in front of him, Kimberly Burgess was perfect. She was everything the media would want to see. He could put on the appearance of a man prioritizing family with invitations to lunches and events, the promise of the best education for her daughter, and anything else she wanted.

But there were a few hiccups to his plan, too.

A family man wouldn’t continue to shut out his only legitimate heir while welcoming someone else into the fold. A family man wouldn’t give any validity to the rumors that were whispered after a brunch that went poorly a decade ago. A family man would invite his estranged son along to a lunch that would unite him with his half sister. A family man might even allow for a fourth seat at the table, a boyfriend that was meant to be a deal breaker, an opening to cancel the plans he didn’t want to make in the first place.

That was how he ended up at a café with big windows and plenty of light, perfect for photographers to get a glimpse of them all. Around the table of lemonades and sandwiches were a motley group - a crumbling man with his legacy laid out in front of him in the form of a daughter he’d never met, a son he’d disowned, and the police detective who had brought them together before he could.
