USAF's first female fighter pilot retires
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/26/2023 - 08:29 in Military
The career of an Air Force pioneer came to an end this weekend, when Maj. Gen. Jeannie M. Leavitt, the first female fighter pilot of the U.S. Air Force (USAF), retired after 31 years of military career.
Leavitt's retirement ceremony took place at Scott Air Base, Illinois, on September 23. The head of the U.S. Transportation Command, General Jacqueline D. Van Ovost - one of the only three women who have ever led a command of a combat squad - officiated and reminded all those present of the legacy that Leavitt created.
Tumblr media
“[Jeannie] had to deal with a constant demand to be in the spotlight, because of her many premieres, something that does not represent who Jeannie is,” Van Ovost said. "She prefers to stay behind, behind the scenes to guide and educate. Taking care of people and the mission - [this is] the true purpose behind his continuous dedication to service."
Tumblr media
Leavitt's journey in the U.S. Air Force was, in fact, marked by numerous "innovations", challenging preconceived notions about the roles that women could play in the armed forces. She was the first woman to join USAF fighter pilot training in 1993. Later, she made history as the first female fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. She was also the first woman to command a combat fighter wing, the 57ª Wing at Nellis Air Base, Nevada.
Throughout her career, she has accumulated more than 3,000 flight hours, including operational missions such as Southern Watch, Northern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Most of his experience was on the F-15E Strike Eagle.
Tumblr media
Van Ovost reflected on the obstacles encountered by women in combat functions during the early 1990s, noting that simply changing policies was not enough. Gaining acceptance and recognition were separate struggles, she added, and Leavitt played a key role during a period of significant change, breaking down barriers that had long kept women out of combat pilot roles.
Throughout her career, Leavitt was a strong advocate for women in aviation and encouraged young women to pursue careers in the Air Force and aviation - four of these pilots appeared in a tribute video during the ceremony.
Tumblr media
His commitment to challenging stereotypes went beyond the military, as he collaborated with Disney on the film 'Captain Marvel' to narrate his journey in the U.S. Air Force and share a more accurate portrait of a lifetime dedicated to service. However, Leavitt's aspirations were never just about personal fulfillment, Van Ovost said.
"On behalf of all those who have traveled by your side and behind you, thank you for having the courageous character necessary to open new paths for others to follow," said Van Ovost.
Tumblr media
Leavitt's final mission was as head of the Air Force Security Center, overseeing the entire program and policy of aviation, occupational, weapons, space and accident prevention and nuclear safety system of the Air Force Department.

The UK proposes closing up to 1,000 railway ticket offices leaving passengers to buy their tickets online and then show a digital pass on either a smartphone or tablet.  In other words, cash and physical tickets are being replaced with a digital pass.
At sporting events such as the Rugby World Cup, fans can only buy tickets online and then present them to a turnstile to gain entry to the grounds.  In other words, cash and physical tickets have been replaced with a digital pass.
Finnish citizens can now verify their identity at the UK border by showing a digital passport.
We are surrendering to a cashless society that requires digital identities and passes which self-appointed global “elites” will use to control every aspect of our lives.
Digital Passes for Train Travel and Sporting Events
The public consultation on proposals to close up to 1,000 railway ticket offices across England was “rendered useless” by inaccessible documents and inadequate Equality and Impact Assessments, Transport for All campaigners told Members of Parliament (“MPs”) during a House of Commons transport select committee in July.
Ticket vending machines (“TVMs”) will make travel almost impossible for blind and visually impaired passengers, for example.  Campaigns Manager Katie Pennick told MPs that the Department for Transport had still failed to publish its programme-wide assessment of the proposals, having rejected Transport for All’s Freedom of Information request earlier in the month claiming that “Ministers and officials need a safe space away from public scrutiny to formulate and develop the policy.” This assessment, Pennick argued, should have been made available to the public to ensure that disabled people would be properly informed while responding to the consultation.
It’s not only disabled people whose access to services is being limited or denied by unmanned turnstiles requiring a digital pass.  Two weeks ago, before a rugby match between England and Argentina, thousands of fans were held up and unable to enter the stadium.  One has to wonder whether electronic turnstiles were part of the problem as ticket holders resorted to jumping over the turnstile gates.

The world's first Drone Superhighway is due to open over the UK in summer 2024, allowing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to make high speed deliveries between Coventry, Milton Keynes and Reading.
Project Skyway has been developed by a consortium led by Altitude Angel with investment from BT. The UK government gave the go ahead for the scheme in 2022.
The 165 mile drone superhighway will be controlled by 30 "Arrow Towers" which will monitor the UAVs and prevent them from colliding with each other, or other objects without the need for a ground-based human pilot.
Concerns have been raised about safety, noise and invasion of privacy by those living under the flightpath. Safety: My company has been assisting with this. While technical failures can never be ruled out, we are confident that risks posed by bird-strikes, unauthorised UAVs, and attempts to block/hack the control systems has been minimised. Full details have been sent to the Civil Aviation Authority, who are expected to grant approval in the next few weeks. Noise: Flying at a height of 400 feet, the fixed-wing UAV's will be almost silent and should not cause any annoyance to those below. Privacy: It is possible that the first UAVs may have cameras attached but, this is for safety-related reasons... not for taking photographs of you in your back garden!
During the initial trial period there will only be around ten UAV flights a day.
Tumblr media
Proposed use and possible future developments. Once UAVs can safely fly alongside other airspace users they can more efficiently be used for: emergency services response, search and rescue, transporting medical supplies and organs, and conducting land surveys.
It is expected that the drone superhighway will be extended to Southampton and the Isle of Wight... but this is currently on hold while suitable sites for the "Arrow Towers" are found.
Future use could include goods deliveries, and flying cars/taxis... which I used to see on television 50+ years ago!

“A Shuttle II Orbiter Approaches a Space Platform
Conceptual design of a new manned space transportation system called Shuttle II is underway at the NASA Langley Research Center. Launched vertically as a two-stage rocket, Shuttle II uses [an] unmanned winged booster in the early stage of flight. The booster glides back to the launch site to be reused while the orbiter, shown here, continues onto orbit. The wingtip fins eliminate the need for a larger vertical tail allowing the use of a large payload canister on the top of the orbiter. In this case, payload is being unloaded from the rear of the canister.
Designed to begin operations in the post 2000-time frame, Shuttle II will have three primary missions: people transport, small payload launch and recovery, and on-orbit servicing. Stressing full reusability of components and greatly simplified operations, Shuttle II has a main goal [of] low-cost manned access to space in a routine, safe, and reliable manner.”

IMAGES: NATO Air Forces improve skills flying together over Lithuania 🇱🇹
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/26/2024 - 17:00 in Military
Allied aircraft from Belgium, France and Lithuania carried out training missions above Lithuania on January 23, conducting flights in close formation and air combat exercises to demonstrate skills and improve flight skills.
Integrated and combined training events of NATO fighter detachments in deployment are an excellent opportunity for Allied air crews. A Lithuanian Air Force C-27 transport aircraft took off from Siauliai Air Base and carried out training missions with Belgian F-16 fighters and French Mirage 2000. The flight was used to improve the readiness of the air crew and perform combined missions within the framework of NATO's Baltic Air Police.
Tumblr media
"Integrated and combined training events of NATO fighter detachments in deployment are an excellent opportunity for the Allied air crew and are beneficial to aircraft controllers who ensure that the training is conducted safely and professionally," said Air Brigadier Michael Carver, Deputy Chief of Operations at the Allied Air Command in Ramstein, Germany.
The Belgian F-16s are currently leading NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission, and the French Mirage 2000 complement the mission. Both detachments are temporarily deployed in Lithuania, securing the skies over the three Baltic Allies.
Tumblr media
“Belgium was the first NATO member deployed in the Baltic States. Twenty years later, our presence is even more important in light of current events. We are proud to be here as a reliable member of the Alliance to ensure security and stability at NATO borders," said Commander Laurant Wuillaume, Commander of the Belgian Detachment. “In addition to the Air Policing mission, the opportunity to train with our Allies daily improves interoperability and procedures between all members, increasing the preparation to react to any potential threat,” he added.
"This type of flight highlights all the easy coordination between NATO assets and highlights the specific skills necessary for such accurate flights," said Lieutenant-Colonel Georges, commander of the French Mirage 2000 detachment in Siauliai.
Tumblr media
The Baltic Air Police mission is an example of NATO's regional security agreements. For 20 years, the Allies worked collectively to preserve the integrity of airspace above Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. On March 29, 2004, NATO's first jet fighter - a Belgian F-16 - landed at Siauliai Air Base to start 24/7/365 Rapid Alert services as part of NATO's new Baltic Air Policing mission.
The NATO Combined Air Operations Center in Uedem, Germany, has been responsible for leading the mission under NATO's Integrated Air Defense and Anti-Missile System or NATINAMDS.
Tumblr media
Seventeen Allies have since taken turns protecting and preserving the integrity of the airspace of the Baltic States, deploying fighter detachments to Siauliai and, since 2014, also to Ämari in Estonia. From March to November 2024, NATO aircraft will conduct the mission from Lielvarde Air Base in Latvia, while Ämari Air Base undergoes repairs on the runway.

Exploring the Vitality of Modern Land Surveying Services
In the realm of land development, construction, and infrastructure projects, the vitality of modern land surveying services cannot be overstated. These services form the cornerstone of any successful project, providing essential data, insights, and expertise that drive informed decision-making, precise planning, and efficient execution. As technology advances and industries evolve, the role of land surveying services continues to expand, shaping the future of development and engineering endeavors.
Modern land surveying services encompass a diverse range of techniques, methodologies, and technologies aimed at capturing accurate spatial data about the Earth's surface and features. From traditional field surveys to advanced remote sensing techniques, land surveyors leverage a variety of tools to measure, map, and analyze the physical characteristics of the land. This wealth of information serves as the foundation for site planning, design, construction, and ongoing management of infrastructure and development projects.
One of the key aspects of modern land surveying services is their ability to integrate cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency, precision, and productivity. Global Positioning System (GPS), LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and satellite imagery are just a few examples of the innovative tools that land surveyors use to collect spatial data with unprecedented speed and accuracy. These technologies enable land surveyors to cover large areas quickly, capture detailed 3D models of the terrain, and generate high-resolution maps and digital elevation models, revolutionizing the surveying process.
Moreover, modern land surveying services play a vital role in supporting sustainable development and environmental stewardship. By conducting ecological surveys, wetland delineations, and habitat assessments, land surveyors help identify sensitive areas and environmental constraints that must be considered during the planning and design phases of development projects. This proactive approach ensures that projects are designed and implemented in a manner that minimizes environmental impact, preserves natural resources, and promotes long-term sustainability.
In addition to supporting environmental sustainability, modern land surveying services also contribute to the safety and resilience of infrastructure and communities. Through hazard mapping, floodplain analysis, and risk assessments, land surveyors help identify potential threats and vulnerabilities that may affect the safety and integrity of infrastructure systems. This information enables stakeholders to implement appropriate mitigation measures, develop emergency response plans, and design resilient infrastructure that can withstand natural disasters and other hazards.
Furthermore, modern land surveying services play a crucial role in supporting smart city initiatives and digital transformation efforts.
