Umineko EP3. Tea Party
Haha I am imagining Genji on a Santa Claus outfit coming to give Yasu presents and reading this and it's really cute.
Tumblr media
9.... so that's about 2 years before Higurashi which uh, is when her parents died. So yeah that tracks.
Tumblr media
Lambdadelta plays around a lot but here you can begin to tell she's pretty sharp, actually. And also you are being told directly Beatrice planned her loss directly.
Tumblr media
I think you got told that during the Eva Crowning scene but you get reconfirmed that the person that made Beatrice a witch was Lambda.
Tumblr media
That's not really true either, Beatrice just has a specific win in mind that is not just making Battler succumb. Could also be taken as her having no plans to live after 1986 no matter what, though.
Tumblr media
Jesus christ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This tea party was really fucking important and set up the dynamics for the rest of the game! Also immediately humanizes Beato again by making her be Lambda's victim - doing a bit of damage control for people really betrayed by the end of EP3 lol.

Umineko EP3. ???
It's kind of funny how the Teap Party is said to be the extra scene for the human and the ??? for the inhuman but it gets flipped around here. In retrospect, it's so sad what everything came down to. Eva's efforts towards Ange never bore fruit and Eva's own dreams brought her nothing but misery, when I first read this scene it was easy to just hate Eva but now with the full context; it's pretty sad even if Eva is still the one more at fault....
Tumblr media
We are lead to believe shit was always this bad, that Eva was always this shitty a mother.... but really this was the horrible end of a relationship that at one point had the possibility to be good.
Tumblr media
It's framed as her last evil act but it's pretty much her last act of kindness really. Also, the intense hatred she has towards Rudolf's family should ring some alarms - we just spent an entire episode on an Eva Trauma Session and Rudolf was barely part of the play. What gives?
Tumblr media
I could imagine this was initially Eva's paranoia about losing her loved ones seeping to Ange.... and slowly turning into a torture method as the relationship grew worse.
Tumblr media
The cruel miracle she was always waiting for....
Tumblr media
he "happiest possible future" is very miserable wording for what effectively means her suicide.
Tumblr media
This ??? was great. It had a really solemn feel and in only a couple words really explained the situation and gave you an introduction to Ange's character.

Umineko EP3. Replay Part 7
Beatrice takes a lot of words to say "Magic is when everyone agrees on a lie together".... you are not meant to see that kind of escapism as entirely good of course but you are meant to slowly get to understand it.
Tumblr media
The fact Beatrice immediately drops the act instead of continuing and tries to force him into signing is an obvious sign that she didn't actually want him to sign it. Battler would get to the desired answer, yes, but hasn't gotten to the truth of Yasu as a person at all. Just idolized a specific version of her that isn't a complete part of her and is partly just on his brain, if she would accept Battler doing that there is no reason why she would have been unhappy with George.
Tumblr media
This part is so well done.... the way she cycles through her sprites.... the way her laugh comes as strained at first and how you can tell she is overacting. You can really feel the second of doubt Beatrice had in accepting this fake acceptance of Battler before she decided no, I will make him understand the full me.
Beatrice makes a big act of not knowing who Ange is but I am pretty sure it's stated no one can enter the board without her permission, and they are at the moment (very right now lol that is definitely not true on the long term) working on the same goals, so.... I think she was expecting this. Also every time he has to confirm to Battler it was a lie she does it with a pained expression before doing the evil ones, haha.
Tumblr media
Ange doesn't take long to reveal her motivations and bitterness, and Battler doesn't really have a counterargument bc shes entirely right he's enjoying this.
Tumblr media
Ange loses no time to reveal she's going to be the real protagonist for much of the rest of the story lmfao.
Tumblr media
And that's the end of the main story for episode 3! The tea party and ??? are next but you also begin unlocking TIPS at this point and I will be definitely checking them out as well!

Umineko EP3. Replay Part 6
It's kind of funny how Battler is lecturing Battler about this like that - in Yasu's eyes the proportional amount of time they would have spent together with George was 0. She didn't think a happy future was possible at all....
Tumblr media
You can tell that Battler is engaging with the game more seriously this time. "Why does magic exist" is a really important question that Umineko does want you to answer!
Tumblr media
You can tell how Battler is sort of starting to idolize Beato - just after demonizing her. I can understand why she considered her plan to deceive him really important. She needs him to understand her not as an evil witch and not as angelic victim who has done no wrong but as someone in between that, as the human she is.
Tumblr media
After going on a huge essay about how he did everything he did for Shannon he's showing that he in fact doesn't really understand her at all. 'Shannon' was most definitely planning to kill herself and reunite with George in the Golden Land.
Tumblr media
lol them saying this right before George is going to die in the same way they imagine Kinzo died. Definitely telling you SHANNON IS A CULPRIT (kind of).
Tumblr media
I do give George a lot of shit but it really can't be denied that he really did love Shannon and that he's trying really hard for his cousins right now. I don't want to make it seem like George is uniquely evil or anything when I give passes to people that have objectively done worse than George and when a huge point of the game is you can't just demonize someone and put everything on them.
Tumblr media
It's kind of funny seeing a work more than a decade old say this like it's ancient history when my own country had cremation be illegal until very recently. Also this scene is cute but also it's funny how the truth it is hiding is "George saw Shannon through the window and followed after her"
Tumblr media
Eva has been trying to distance herself from EVA for a bit but EVA spells it out for us, neither of them is REALLY Eva. Eva is made up of both the cruel greedy witch who wants the gold for herself and spites her siblings and the Eva who realizes her greed has destroyed her and Hideyoshi and regrets everything.
Tumblr media
Hahaha.... it's kind of fucked up to think about it, isn't it? Just when Krauss starts admitting to himself that he has fucked up his relationship with his siblings and that maybe there's nothing he could to fix it.... Eva is putting sedatives in his coffee in order to kill him.
Tumblr media
it's funny how this is the conclusion Rika got during Saikkoroshi -this should show you Beatrice is acting because magic isn't literal in Umineko like it is in Higurashi.
Tumblr media
I kind of wonder how this went in reality... obviously Yasu killed George after George and Shannon reunited.... did they have a conversation beforehand? Was George killed before he could figure out what is going on? I am not sure.... I kind of think it's the latter though. I don't think Yasu would want to risk George's hatred she feared if the truth was out.
Tumblr media
Nanjo is so bad at lying in retrospect lmfao - he is freaking the shit out at being found out lol.
Tumblr media
Ok so, I originally thought Yasu was the one that killed them but it is clear it was Eva from EP7. So my updated line of events is: After coming back from finding Hideyoshi's corpse, Eva suspects Natsuhi and Kraussof of the murder, and realizing they are the only people left towards full inheritance, she uses the sleeping pills she had stolen earlier and strangles them. Afterward, she disposes of the corpses outside and Yasu finds them. She cleans up the corpses and stakes them and puts them in the arbor. When coming back to discuss future steps with Nanjo, George notices her and follows her to the mansion where Yasu kills him.
Also, the timeline of when Eva stole the sedatives is pretty interesting.... that was before Eva even died. So the idea of killing others was already crossing her head by then. Still don't think she would have gone through with it had the first accidental death not happened.
Tumblr media
It's kind of interesting to speculate why Yasu wrote those numbers - could be she somehow figured out that the epitaph was solved but in that case, I think they would turn off the bomb. You could also read it as Tohya seeing her more as a sympathetic person with regrets and hesitancy about what she is doing compared to Yasu, too. Could just be a hint to Battler as well since he would realize it is his birthday number.
Tumblr media
Jessica is usually portrayed as pretty naive and clueless but she's right on the mark here... the way Eva copes about having shot Jessica is pretty similar to EP7 tea party.... I think this chapter provides the closest line of events toward what actually happened compared to all the other ones. Lots of hints around.
Tumblr media
"Too" huh, haha, shows that someone was going to survive this chapter a little before it happens.
Tumblr media
Of course, Jessica should have been very suspicious of her hearing someone die and then immediately having Kanon like hello! but she's not exactly in a very good mental state rn she will take what she can get.
Tumblr media
This moment is really tender, though... I can't help but be a bit more sympathetic to Kanon Jessica even though I don't think that was ever a serious choice in Yasu's mind.... maybe a vague yearning yes but as soon as he had the opportunity Kanon cut it off.
Tumblr media
While this strategy is obviously part of Beato's strategy.... I think there is something more to be said about it. At this moment Yasu as Kanon is literally giving Jessica some last happy moments. I can interpret this scene as a sort of fight between evil heartless perspective Yasu had of herself and Battler/Tohya's more sympathetic view of her.... the song playing during this part being "Thank you for being born" also feels like something they would want to say to Yasu.
Tumblr media
In the same way the end of EP2 was Yasu writing wish fulfillment for Rosa and Maria it is hard for me to not read this scene Tohya wrote of Kanon and Beatrice being able to reconcile as wish fulfillment for Yasu.
Tumblr media
There's something to be said about how Battler is only able to take Beato as a person seriously once they find someone else to demonize - I can see why he kind of overcorrected during ep8.
Tumblr media
The way he goes towards Eva is by thoroughly ignoring the heart, not even bothering to explain why she would kill Hideyoshi. And also he's mostly wrong here.
Tumblr media
Virgilia mentioned that Beatrice doesn't use this kind of attack and yeah, I don't think she ever has tried something like this, I think it's a good way to force Battler to think of the heart but I guess Beatrice wanted Battler to do that on his own.
Tumblr media
This answer required a lot of 'love' from Battler's part. It required him to understand Eva and Hideyoshi's relation, Rudolf's brand of cigs, Kyyrie's behavior, etc.... must be a little bittersweet to see Battler finally behave how you wanted him to when the culprit is no longer Yasu, huh.
Tumblr media
Kind of interesting how much of an answer EVA gives away here! Confirming Eva is a culprit and that there was a culprit besides her, Beatrice kind of begins freaking out probably because she is starting to drop a riddle towards Yasu and not Eva.
Tumblr media
Oh woah, Battler figured out the answer to the riddle immediately he just named the wrong person! Of course, they aren't personalities as much as her characters - but still! That was huge!
Tumblr media
This is a very sad exchange haha.... I have no doubt she was being genuine in her disappointment here.
Tumblr media
There are many valuable hints for the heat of the story in this exchange.... from EVA yelling about how she doesn't want to go back to being a human to Beatrice saying she doesn't want Battler to see her real form, to the point of narration calling it her "shabby" form I kind of see this episode as the transition point between early Umineko and Later Umineko even if EP4 is the obvious point.
Tumblr media
From what I hear some fans felt betrayed by Battler turning to the witch side in EP5, which is kind of insane considering he basically already "betrayed" the human side here.
Tumblr media
We don't really know the full exchange that led to this - I could see this being Battler's interpretation of events or Battler simply figuring out Rosa's death and Eva shooting him in response. As for how Eva survived, I imagined after everyone was dead she just kind of ran to the gold bc that's all she had left and saw the way to Kuwadarian.
Tumblr media
You are definitely meant to feel the Golden Land scene is bizarre with the problems that plagued these families (ie Natsuhi being controlling of Jessica, Eva and Shannon, etc) still existing but being brushed aside, and everyone kind of merging and losing individuality and I can understand why people maybe felt a little bit off about it on Episode 8.... but I think there is a lot of added context about why someone would accept a world like this by then, especially in the specific context of Ange. I have a long time to formulate all my thoughts until then!

Umineko EP3. Replay Part 5
Well yeah Battler, you got it! How did the other Golden Witch get her powers then?
Tumblr media
lmfao owned.
Tumblr media
Man Virgilia and Ronove really spoil Battler with all the hints.
Tumblr media
Rosa and Eva speaking in code is pretty good, neither wants to leave the room without the other....
Tumblr media
The fact Rosa shakes a bottle in frustration in trying to find something that isn't there while being angry at Maria for being mad that something isn't where it should be is pretty ironic.
Tumblr media
Obviously this scene didn't literally happen and something closer to what actually happens is something like Eva telling Hideyoshi about the gold and her plans and etc while being disgusted by her own greed, while at the same time going deeper into it....
Tumblr media
Maria's random insistence at this to me seems like a sign that this is something Yasu and Maria had pre-planned. If there was a deadlock taking place, she would cry about her rose, similar to how she used the cards to break deadlocks in episode 1 and 2. Though I don't think it would work like they intended this time if Eva didn't like, fuck things up her own way.... I don't think Yasu would murder Rosa in front of Maria and I don't think she would like, shoot Maria either....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well.... obviously the truth is something in between here. Eva may not be enjoying tutoring Rosa at this moment, but she is surely having a fight with her about keeping the secret with her, and pushing her into the fence in frustration.... and then murdering her daughter to leave no witness. Granted, I don't think Eva would just go on a murder spree normally.... I think of it as something kind of like Meakashi Shion. The murders wouldn't have happened if the first accident didn't.
Tumblr media
I.... forgot Battler just tells her to kill herself omg.... this scene is kind of interesting. i am kind of interpreting it as what Yasu was scared Battler would think of her when she found out about her murder mystery plans... we know from episode 8 manga that he is all things considered pretty forgiving of it, in actuality. But I could see Yasu thinking this is how it would go down or even what went through his head at first before stopping himself and thinking of what led to it. Also Beato will get to get her wish of seeing what Battler cooks in episode 8!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course she is exaggerating for her trick strategy, but I don't think this is too far from what she thought about herself, either, and it's not like she wasn't cruel with her pranks and stuff so it isn't entirely unwarranted, but...
Tumblr media
I imagine she probably did apologize to Maria something like here when she found her corpse and had to fix it up, too....
Tumblr media
Obviously, though, you are supposed to be very sus of Beato here lol. I mean she turotred Kanon like, a couple hours ago lol.
Tumblr media
It's really funny how it seems this specific act didn't really trick anyone lol - sorry Yasu I guess you kind of failed.
Tumblr media
There is a clear difference in my view in how the family acts towards the murder in this episode and the last one. In this one they more or less figured out both this and the first murder - compared to how in the first 2 episodes everyone was clueless. I think in universe you can justify this with there being more servant deaths and therefore less culprits to worry about and also you can theorize that Yasu assumed her plan would go without a hitch - something Tohya knew wasn't true.
Tumblr media
Eva's desperate to throw suspicion elsewhere lmfao.
Tumblr media
tldr people don't believe in magic anymore so to make them believe it you have to make very obtuse murders.
Tumblr media
It is kind of funny Hideyoshi doesn't realize what is going on even though it is decently obvious, lol. Also, Natsuhi is freaking out because their reasoning is stupid - and I mean it is if you take it at face value, maybe you should have thought about it Hideyoshi!
Tumblr media
"Until that question could be dealt with, the only answer was[...] magic" Is an interesting line. The answer to this sequence of events is obvious, Kyrie and Rudolf are luring out Hideyoshi.... so if this is framed as magic, it tells you how magic is used in other situations, and to go back to other magical scenes and see what you can take from them.
Tumblr media
I kind of wonder how Hideyoshi was able to kill both Rudolf and Kyrie, especially at such a disadvantage. I guess he didn't come unscathed, though, considering he died. So it could be as simple as a bullet missing. him or him attacking before Rudolf and Kyrie were ready.
Tumblr media
Uh huh, Kyrie... you can tell both this was written by someone with love for Kyrie and Rudolf and that they are someone who knows Kyrie might uh, have some issues.
Tumblr media
To be honest, I originally took this to mean Eva literally did show herself and caused the shootout where she was the one survivor when I first read it... I guess I was being too literal when I read this for the first time. It's more of a general representation on Eva's complicated feelings towards her family, the gold, etc coupled with her fucking up the board.
Tumblr media
Kyrie is more or less wrong about everything she says here, Rudolf was not in any remote way cornered, in fact if anything he was cornered *towards* dating Kyrie and he still picked Asumu. Kyrie was never anything more than Rudolf's side and they only ever got together officially because Asumu happened to die. To be honest I can't exactly blame rudolf for thinking Kyrie would kill him for revealing the truth.... he would in fact kind of deserve it.
Tumblr media
I kind of want to use this scene to springboard to talk about misogyny in Umineko in general - specifically the ones experienced by the mothers. This entire chapter is basically an essay on how Eva faces misogyny, Natsuhi was basically sold and used as a womb, Rosa was left by her husband and forced to deal with how society treats single mothers, Kyrie has shit with her family as well as Rudolf both depending on her while using her as a side piece and feeling emasculated by her, etc. really all the women in Umineko are greatly affected by misogyny. And since Umineko deals a lot with generational trauma and cycle of abuse that is also how misogyny is passed down in Umineko Eva yells at Natsuhi about how she is just a womb, tries to use the fact George is male and Jessica female to steal the headship from Jessica, and that's even before the awful way they treat Shannon. Natsuhi refuses to engage with her daughter as a full person with a variety of interesting and own personality and instead tries to mold her into a "proper" and "modest" woman. Rosa tells her own daughter she is the reason her father left and blames her for the people she is dating not wanting to deal with her. And finally, Kyrie throws endless shit to Asumu and basically has a headcanon about how Rudolf is blameless and Asumu was just a homewrecking whore who got in the way of her and Rudolf, when Rudolf is obviously the one at fault. I don't want to make it look like I am saying these are basically the same characters or anything like that, there is a lot of difference in motivations behind why they do this, in how they cope with it, etc, but I mostly discuss that in other posts so I don't want to go into that much details. I think Umineko overall deals with misogyny in a good way- it understands that misogyny isn't just a Big Bad Old Fashioned Man you have to defeat, and afterward misogyny is solved, it isn't something you can just defeat by just changing the way you think or whatever but a system built in favor of men that gets internalized by everyone, including women, and that those attitudes are internalized and passed to the next generation before they can so much as even talked. This is a little bit of a tangent but related to how all of the characters previously talked about are both victims and afterward abusers or otherwise people that harm others, I am happy that WTC works in general aren't shy of showing how abuse can be internalized in bad ways that cause harm to others while still holding sympathy and space for the victims. A lot of works are scared of this because if done wrong it can look like victim blaming or ignoring victims in favor of abusers, but I think works like this are really important for victims to understand that some imperfect behavior after being abused is normal and that they aren't irredeemable and can grow themselves if they ever fail and do bad things. holy shit I went on a huge tangent. I haven't played in like 2 days because I got the idea to write this 2 days ago and have been workshopping on my brain how to word it.
Anyways back on regularly scheduled Umineko, it is kind of funny how the first time humans really 'win' against magic it's not really presented in a positive light. They won because their vices were even worse than the vices of the stakes representing sloth and envy.
Tumblr media
Beatrice struggles about dancing around the fact she just wants Battler to acknowledge her for her own sake, lol.
Tumblr media
they have hinted like 10 times that the chiester sisters = gun in the last like 20 lines lmfao.
Tumblr media
They are dropping a bunch of hints towards what Beatrice actually wants here. The awkward conversation with EVA meant the same thing more or less too.
Tumblr media
This scene's interesting - I am sure Hideyoshi in actuality DID feel Eva was being changed by the gold into a crueler person but everything points towards him being pretty enabling overall. Also Hideyoshi hints towards magic and witchdom being about being unable to deal with the past. Also there is a line that says "The gun near rudolf killed Hideyoshi (paraphrasing) which is kind of interesting considering the manga says it was Kyrie instead.
Tumblr media
The fact Eva is freaking out this much about Hideyoshi going outside - even before she knew that Rudolf and Kyrie followed him is a hint that she was recruited, I think. After all, when talking with Rosa she said she thought the original murders were a prank, and she was the one that killed Rosa and Maria so.... why is she freaking out now?
Tumblr media
Ok yeah - she's using Yasu keywords like 'Golden witch" and witch in general on a nonfantasy scene. Definitely some hints towards that I think. i didn't catch that Eva was an accomplice in this episode until I read the manga, to be honest. Thought she'd just murdered people on her own. Definitely didn't trust Yasu at all though, didn't even tell her she found the gold.

Umineko EP3. Replay Part 3
She probably expected it but giving out so much of her trauma away just to not even be believed must have hurt a bit...
Tumblr media
Yeah...
Tumblr media
Again, obviously using this story as a device to talk about herself. K Beatrice never really considered suicide like that, the one that did was Yasu. The way the story says that Kinzo and Beatrice's love is one-sided is interesting - that's not how its portrayed in ep7, though I can imagine that's how Yasu saw it, due to how her life was fucked up by Kinzo.
Tumblr media
The referring of Kinzo as mage/magician/blacksmith is pretty interesting to me. I think it shows how yes a complete dismissal of 'maigc' we see in Battler and later Erika is bad and can hurt people who need help the complete enabling that Genji and others did of Kinzo's magic is bad, too.
Tumblr media
B-batler theres another more obvious and clear definition of the "miracle of creating life" here stop getting frustrated!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are like a hundred million hints here Battler! No wonder Beatrice is starting to get frustrated with you. The only bigger hint she could give at this time is basically force-feeding the answer.
Tumblr media
Awkard phrasing considering that's not even true aside - you can tell how their dynamic has changed a bit by now. By this point at the last chapter Battler was talking about how she was evil and would never accept her.
Tumblr media
He's starting to get it but then he forces himself out of taking the story seriously.... Ronove tries to get him back on track though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Woah I didn't realize they gave actual dates here... honestly, I don't have the timeline of events 100% clear in my mind on certain stuff so maybe I should work on that with this reread....
Tumblr media
He's able to get the general gist back, though! Thanks, Ronove!
Tumblr media
Ronove chastises him for trying to use Beatrice as a sacrificial piece here too - obviously a hint that we should look into the people he loves.
Tumblr media
Here is Rosa basically talking about the time she heavily considered suicide and then there's her brother and her sister making fun of her for 1. Not trying harder and 2. Being a failure at what she likes. I sit really any surprise Rosa ended up as fucked up as she is?
Tumblr media
Man, this so fucked up.... not allowed to know anything, completely stuck inside one man's delusions....
Tumblr media
I think the fact in this episode you spend time with a younger Rosa and Eva a very interesting a necessary choice for the game - here you meet an Eva before the realization that her dreams will never become true and a Rosa before she was thrust into adulthood with a million unresolved traumas and no support system - I think this was a very necessary choice so that we could see this characters not as people to scapegoat for all the misfortune but as complicated people.
Tumblr media
Yes, that's a better assessment, as her entire life has been a trick by and for Kinzo...
Tumblr media
This must have really fucked up Rosa a lot - I imagine she felt so so guilty about it. I don't really think you can blame Beatrice or Rosa here - the fault lies with Kinzo grooming someone to be so defenseless and naive to the point they can barely understand danger.
Tumblr media
Beato has had enough of having Battler try to blame an ethereal 19th person now, Battler is forced to play like a big boy now.
Tumblr media
I think this is probably referring to how Kinzow is unable to take any results other than Beatrice being brought back to him... other people might think of ways of moving on with their life and accepting their misfortune.... Kinzo chose to spend the rest of his life chasing something impossible and ruining the lives of many people in the process.
Tumblr media
I can't really express it very well here but holy shit an animated CG.
Tumblr media
I might be overthinking this but the fact this episode, outside the meta, refers to the previous episodes is a hint that this one was written a bit after the other ones - the contrast between episode 2 and 3 Shannon is kind of interesting but ultimately it's not that different, Shannon doesn't believe that a real future with George is possible so she's fine with dying after getting the highest attainment (the ring) she believes she can possibly achieve. It's just her death here came earlier than it did in ep2.
Tumblr media
Ouch that line about crying himself to sleep over being furniture hurts....
Tumblr media
These conversations are pretty interesting when you consider it is the same person struggling with their own thoughts, the part that is fine with killing themselves after getting a ring since that's the happiest they will ever be and the part full of regret and bitterness...
Tumblr media
The lines of pure self-hatred are pretty tragic too...
Tumblr media
With this board being the first one to go really off the rails the fact Genji died so early probably has to do with it, lol, that's kind of hard mode for Yasu.... of course, the narrative purpose is Tohya knowing the board didn't go as Yasu planned I and to hint us towards how it actually went down in actuality.
Tumblr media
Huh.... they bring this up again right after they bring up how Kinzo's wife did the same thing when she thought/knew Kinzow as having an affair.... I guess Natsuhi suspected that as well.
Tumblr media
You can tell this episode isn't written by Gohda anymore because Gohda has a scene without someone remarking that he is a snake and evil.
Tumblr media
The fact original Beatrice roughly means "played a lot of pranks" is pretty funny.
Tumblr media
Battler going uh uh I can't take this anymore here always felt a little weird as if this was any weird than the Kanon goat fight in epsidoe 2... that was due to the changed plans in 3 probably though.

Umineko EP3. Replay Part 2
Obviously, it's at least partly just damage control but Natsuhi takes the role of Kinzo sooo often. Sad to basically headcanon someone who hated you into someone who understood you.
Tumblr media
Woah that was throwing Shannon to the wolves rather unprompted.... also she didn't need to put on a dress at all!
Tumblr media
Been a while since I started this chapter so I got shocked by the Kuwadorian hint but I guess the episode started with Baby Beatrice on Kuwadorian anyways.
Tumblr media
In other words, stop trying to look for an out Battler!
Tumblr media
Jeez Natsuhi, little you know they have the authority to dismiss you out of the island if they wanted.
Tumblr media
Interesting... Didn't realize Eva had any thoughts about Beatrice besides thinking she was bullshit but I guess it's not hard to imagine for someone whose efforts were constantly denied due to being a woman that seeing a female ruler of the island appear would be something they look forwards to....
Tumblr media
Um ah uh yeah sure
Tumblr media
The way Eva switched to a sad face in this conversation is pretty interesting to me - it seems she's pretty sympathetic to Kinzo's wife... no one else seems to have much an opinion on her.
Tumblr media
The scenes that draw attention to how Beatrice's mythology was created are pretty interesting. A lot of Kumasawa's stories are for that purpose too.
Tumblr media
You are trying so fucking hard for someone that doesn't like you Natsuhi.
Tumblr media
Natsuhi frames a lot of it as an offense to Kinzo and whatever but I am pretty sure a lot of her heartened defense is her own insecurities about being a politically kidnapped wife.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, the game just says this directly later lol - also with how defensive she's being I think she might honestly suspect Krauss of having an affair but that's mostly just my interpretation I don't think anything in the game hints at it.
Tumblr media
Yeah. such as already having won the headship lol.
Tumblr media
This is exactly what happened when everyone 'acknowledged' Beatrice at the church during ep2 as well! Obviously besides asking for the headship - they already have that. but they did force the siblings to acknowledge her using her gold.
Tumblr media
The obvious intent of this scene is to hint you at towards how they convince people to be accomplices - just throw money at them.
Tumblr media
That's surprisingly harsh from Hideyoshi, though I think Eva probably needed to be told stuff like that more. Eva and Natsuhi are pretty obviously the only people that remotely give a shit about headship, Krauss' ego would be hurt by no longer being head too but he isn't aggressively defensive of it like those 2. They still would trade it for money, though, at least with enough convincing from their partners.
Tumblr media
Not really, her goal was to get caught by Battler! Or anyone really but preferably Battler.
Tumblr media
Kyrie's not really wrong here, though, when she added that condition she seemed to consider that basically a miracle - in reality, it was solved like 10 minutes into her plan.
Tumblr media
Oh Battler - Ronove and Beatrice are trying to guide you so hard but you refuse anyways. Battler really is kind of a naive sweet child at this point.
Tumblr media
"You are building a connected theory instead of making shit up on the spot! Good for you Battler!"
Tumblr media
Beatrice is giving away a bit of her game here though - she's no longer forcing Battler into the magic theory but into the one of the 18 is the culprit theory!
Tumblr media
They had a whole ass tangent before anyone even brought up witches again lmfao. Forgetting your role here a bit Beato!
Tumblr media
Yeah, you are getting it Battler.
Tumblr media
Battler's finally realizing the red is more for his benefit than anyone else's!!
Tumblr media
Hahaha.... I am sad now....
Tumblr media
Kinzo prevents that red haha, that's probably a little frustrating for Beato. Though I also think she wouldn't have repeated it anyways because giving him the harsh truth rn would probably break Battler.
Tumblr media
Not a horrible assessment of what witches are, though an unsympathetic one.
Tumblr media
It's pretty weird contrast to see this and ep2 Rosa - though I guess in that case she physically saw Beatrice in person and a couple hours later she explained the situation and in this case she didn't, and in episode 1 they didn't take the letter seriously at all so there wasn't time for her trauma to flare up again (or it did off screen)
Tumblr media
The fact that Kuwadorian Beatrice doesn't even seem 100% sure Kinzo is her father because of his delusions and gaslighting is so heartbreaking - she just wants to know basic details about herself and is denied.
Tumblr media
Beatrice is pretty clearly talking about both her life as Yasu and about her mother here I think.
Tumblr media
"Cage of flesh" is really sad wording when you think about what she felt about her body....

Umineko EP3. Replay Part 1
This scene seems like a vague retelling of Kuwadorian Beatrice's life - I say vague because the details seem a little off? Kinzo would almost certainly not care if Beatrice broke a vase. Honestly, she could probably burn down the mansion and he would laugh it off, so I think it's a retelling colored by either Beatrice/Yasu's or Tohya's perspective of Kinzo.
Tumblr media
Of course, it goes without saying that what happened in this case was Kumasawa agreeing with K Beatrice to pretend a cat broke the vase instead. And also you are being shown what magic IS - multiple people agreeing to a single story.
Tumblr media
It's kind of funny to think about how Kumasawa being a 'minor' character who thinks all of this is a bit game she's a huge part of why Yasu developed her magical thinking in the first place.
Tumblr media
It's kind of interesting to think about how all the adults (er uh, except maybe Rosa, she generally treats Maria worse when there is no one to see.) are at their worst during the conferences we see in the game... it makes sense, it's a place for all their childhood traumas flare up.
Tumblr media
I think it's kind of interesting how Eva in this scene seems to genuinely believe misogyny is bad and should be fought against - as opposed to older Eva who is happy to throw endless misogyny towards Natsuhi and even Jessica... I think she had to suppress a lot of her beliefs and adopt more regressive ones when she realized she would never personally be head and the only way she could ever even remotely fulfill her dreams was by weaponizing that same misogyny against Jessica with George.
Tumblr media
For how much the narration and meta-kinzo (possibly real Kinzo? I don't know) talked about how his family are vultures for wanting his inheritance it's not like Kinzo himself treated his children as anything more than money-making machines - he got what he put into the relationship.
Tumblr media
Genji is a horrible enabler even if he's being 'kind' about it.
Tumblr media
This line is really interesting to me here, how he defends Eva by lying for her. I think it helps show that the problem isn't that Krauss is just Too Evil and ruined Eva's life - He was dealing with an abusive father and an awful environment too.
Tumblr media
The purpose of a lot of ch3 is to ease you into the Umineko mystery and feed you a lot of answers - such as literally seeing the birth of a witch.
Tumblr media
This is pretty heartbreaking to read to me, it happens a lot in real life.... someone trying to be the perfect woman, the perfect gay person, etc. In order to try and win the approval of people that will never accept you... and the crushing realization that it will never work and that they consider your very existence disgusting.
Tumblr media
What other character is constantly showing up in order to say the mean things that another character just can't bring herself to say?
Tumblr media
It's no wonder that Lamda was the one who acknowledged EVA-Beatrice. Her personal belief system is already pretty close to Lambda's.
Tumblr media
Ah well, I guess Eva is more or less repeating what I said earlier about throwing away her beliefs with George, haha.
Tumblr media
She's more self-aware about how she's just harming Jessica like she was harmed than I realized, it's kind of funny though how Jessica seems to have this vitriol go over her head mostly. I wouldn't be surprised if Jessica considers it at least somewhat and then decides that nah, she must be overthinking what Eva meant.
Tumblr media
Again he's such an enabler.... in the same way love can be used to look past someone's flaws and help you understand them love can also make you ignore flaws and prevent growth.
Tumblr media
Eva and George's relationship can't begin to heal until Eva grapples with what she's doing with her life. I can't really tolerate what Hideyoshi is doing here...
Tumblr media
Interesting to see how the episode that is trying to humanize Eva is also the one that paints her as a murderer, probably should also get you thinking to do that with Beatrice as well!
Tumblr media
Hahaha.... poor Yasu. She's even trying to get him to remember directly here and still nothing... and to be honest considering this is written by Tohya I am pretty sure this is very accurate to reality.
Tumblr media
It must be really painful for Yasu to hear this is something Battler wants to forget...
Tumblr media
Sigh.... Battler... he's being really dismissive of Yasu's feelings here without knowing - but I guess you can say it's an improvement of episode 1 and 2 where he seemed to barely remember Shannon?
Tumblr media
I think he's playing up his Persona a bit here but still, seems he learned a lot of bad habits from Rudolf until Yasu was a kind of wake up call, at least in the meta.
Tumblr media
The games laying it really thick, huh.
Tumblr media
They are dropping the "heart" stuff here too, this scene is really laying the foundation for Answers Arc!
Tumblr media
The way they drop Higurashi concepts here is pretty cruel, making you think they will start fixing all their issues in future loops and find the perfect fragment... but Umineko is just not that kind of work.
Tumblr media
Think this is the first time Beatrice herself starts calling Maria an apprentice too!
Tumblr media
You are one of the first victims here!
Tumblr media
The fact Ronove, Yasu's character stand-in for Genji, has one of his traits be "gay" is really funny ngl... guess she knew Genji was in love with Kinzo.
Tumblr media
Beatrice is obviously talking about Yasu's childhood here, a pretty big hint these are imaginary friends to someone! And when you whittle down who has been on the island for a long time and would be lonely, well, there's not a lot of people to consider, are there?
Tumblr media
I think this is also a pretty obvious stand-in for Beatrice as the author and Battler as the reader - we have accepted that the story has more to it than the 100% classic mystery we saw in EP1, and so characters like these aren't out of place anymore.
Tumblr media
Eva knows Kinzo is dead but she isn't going to let an opportunity to become Head go. Also Jesus Christ, Eva. Eva's clearly leading the discussion here and the narrative/Eva is framing Rosa as dumb and slow for not realizing this is her chance at headship... pretty sure she's aware but she isn't happy about the possibility of any of her siblings taking 100% of the inheritance.

Umineko EP3. Replay Part 4
God damn, they went weirdly hard in this scene on console.
Tumblr media
I don't really have a lot to say about this scene other than it''s really goofy to compare how Yasu used magic to how Tohya does lmfaoooo
Tumblr media
He's just throwing an actual tantrum omg I remembered him leaving but not him literally crying at Beatrice
Tumblr media
you are so bad at lying
Tumblr media
Nanjo on panic mode when they actually check her corpse lmfao.
Tumblr media
I also don't really have a lot to say about this scene - it's a good scene made to help you understand the world after a lot of people gave up in episode 2, it is said by Virgilia because that is someone whose words you trust right now, it's also a little boring to get explained stuff like this again on reread lol.
Tumblr media
Eva is an accomplice this time so she should know about Kinzo's situation so I am pretty sure she is just fucking with Natsuhi as she does in episode 1 - though I guess she might have also been recruited later when shes just kind of walking around solving the epitaph.
Tumblr media
Of course, the trick here is just to leave everything prepared except the first and last rooms where Shakannon are, and Shannon would run from the first room to the last one after her corpse was discovered... the fact that they left the master keys is pretty risky though, they could have decided to not follow the order at any time and fucked things over....
Tumblr media
Battler immediately figures it out too!
Tumblr media
I imagine Beatrice was a bit hesitant to use this since it might be above Battler's grade, though I think the fact she did shows she trusts his intelligence more than before.
Tumblr media
This is probably one of the first times you see Beatricce really flair around - Battler is off the trail by now but she still has to figure out a way to word things without saying things that give her away! It's pretty exciting to read even knowing the solution.
Tumblr media
This is a cute line haha. I think it shows that even if he has improved a lot he still has a lot to learn - after all pushing on Kanon is actually what he should have done in that game even if 'Kanon' isn't the culprit!
Tumblr media
Team Beato is freaking out here, rightfully so! One wrong word to this repetition request and she either gives her game away or makes the mystery basically unsolvable!
Tumblr media
You can tell by now they are really having fun together lmfao. Ronove realizes how difficult the situation is and asks for time.
Tumblr media
Um, ah that's a way to interpret that interaction Rosa, though maybe she meant it sarcastically.
Tumblr media
These are the hints they are talking about Taiwan, though there when they start talking about the symbol for Maria's name and stuff is where I kind of went "no way I'm getting the answer to this" when I first read it lol
Tumblr media
I imagine Kinzo didn't like that since it gave 2 possible hints to the puzzle - you could link village to Maria as stated and then you could link 'Maria' to the church and give a kind of shortcut to the answer.... also I guess everyone is in agreement Maria was disliked by Kinzo even though he probably met her like, 3 times tops after she was a baby. It's kind of interesting how both of Yasu's games had her assume the family wouldn't even bother solving the epitaph - but as soon as someone with an idea of what actually happened writes a story suddenly the family cares!
Tumblr media
This line always makes me chuckle - especially Natsuhi's ???
Tumblr media
It's a bit funny how they just spell out what they will do later and yet it still feels like a betrayal somehow, doesn't it? I think it's trying to make you lie to yourself so you understand a bit more about why people choose to live in magic. Also these lines pretty much spell out Beatrice motivations - to make Battler accept her.
Tumblr media
I think by this point Eva was probably already recruited - I think she wouldn't be this bold and remark about how she isn't scared of the culprit otherwise.
Tumblr media
Interesting how Eva knows this! I kind of assumed she sincerely thought her stupid - but I guess this makes sense! There's a reason why she asked her for help specifically earlier!
Tumblr media
Woah that's a line I didn't expect lol - I guess it shows how Eva's spite for others is also her feelings of insecurity.
Tumblr media
Seeing Eva break is kind of cute - I guess I would too if the thing I wanted since I was born but was always denied would be given to me magically!
Tumblr media
The way the game plays the creepy music before switching to Happiness of Marionette I think really highlights how this huge amount of gold being found will just lead to greed and not actually anything good...
Tumblr media
Kinda funny how this is the opposite conclusion Eva seems to have gotten in her actual, real, life after Rokkenjima.
Tumblr media
Man, this family is so fucked.
Tumblr media
Guess this time Yasu told Eva this was a prank too - I wonder if she gave Eva any hints about the epitaph on her way as well.... also this entire scene is really tense as you can tell they are both ready to kill each other as soon as negoations break off. Also if Eva just wasn't destroyed by her greed and actually told the siblings there wouldn't be any more murders by Yasu - but I am sure the siblings would uh. Figure something out between themselves anwyasy.
Tumblr media
Of course, the purpose of this scene is to get you thinking into what makes someone a witch. If the Golden power was granted to Eva upon finding the room, how did the original Beatrice get it?
Tumblr media
The sponsorship system is interesting - in reality, it was probably something Yasu made up to play with Maria.... though there is a lot you can say about Lambdadelta and Bern based on who they sponsor but I'll probably have more to say about it later.
Tumblr media
It's kind of funny how many things you can imagine this line is referencing (or a combination of things) from Takano's efforts to get her grandfather acknowledged, to Satoko's efforts at improving herself for Satoshi to Satoko's efforts to trap Rika in GouSotsuMeguri - I don't really have a very well developed theory on WTC as a series since I read things wildly out of order and am a rather new fan and didn't even finish Ciconia yet - but that's part of the reason I am rereading now.
